How to fix "Screen overlay detected" error
If "screen overlay detected" has suddenly popped up on your smartphone's screen, you're in the right place. Here we'll explain why this message is appearing, and how to make it go away. Follow this step-by-step guide to handle it the right way.
Jump to:
Error message “Screen overlay detected”: the cause
- The problem: Android suddenly warns you that a screen overlay has been detected.
- The reason: This message appears when you’re running a floating app, and then start a newly installed one, which requests access rights. Common floating apps include the chat heads of Facebook Messenger that can appear floating above other apps.
- Affected Smartphones: Users across the internet have reported experiencing this problem on Samsung and Motorola smartphones, among others. AndroidPIT managed to replicate the behavior on a Vodafone and a Samsung smartphone.
- Problem apps: We replicated the problem using Drupe, but ES File Explorer, CleanMaster, Lux and Twilight have all been blamed for the problem.
- The technical background: As a security measure, apps ask for permission to use certain parts of your phone (internal storage, camera, etc.). In theory, a display overlay can interfere with the dialogue requesting permission, so you need to disable the feature to interact with the dialogue.
The solution: a step-by-step fix
Step one: "Screen overlay detected" fix
Find out what apps have permission to draw over the screen. On a non-Samsung smartphone, follow these steps:
- Open the Settings
- Tap the magnifying glass at the top right
- Enter the search term “draw”
- Tap Draw over other apps
- Alternative route: Apps> [gear icon]> Draw over other apps
For Samsung users:
- Open the Settings
- Then Applications > Application manager
- Press on More > Apps that can appear on top
Step two: check app permissions
You will find yourself in front of a list of apps that have permission to use floating buttons or other screen overlays. Now you need to identify the problem app and temporarily deny it permission to draw over the screen. Here are some pointers on how to identify the app that’s causing the trouble:
- Do you see an app bubble on your screen? If so, this app is almost certainly the cause. Either you hide the app bubble or disable the app in the list.
- Do you have an app installed that changes the colors on the display or adjusts the brightness?
- Reportedly, Clean Master can be a trouble maker. If you see Clean Master in the list, disable it.
- If there’s no obvious cause, disable everything.
Step three: re-try the app
Now you can try launching the app again, and it should request permissions without the “Display overlay detected” error getting in the way.
For Samsung users: We have also received a report that suggests the one-handed keyboard setting could be the root cause. Deactivate it by going to Settings> Advanced features > One-handed operation.
Step four: reactivate screen overlays
In order for the app(s) that you have disabled in step two to work again, you need to re-enable its overlay permissions. If you turned off all apps, it might be worth considering only reactivating only the apps that you actually use.
Step five: use safe mode
If the above steps don't work, there's an additional step you can take to try and fix the issue. This requires you to use the "safe mode" Android feature to manage the app permissions.
This method requires you to remember the app you’re having these issues with. (e.g., if it’s WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger).
- First, press the power button of your phone.
- Press and hold the Power Off option on the pop up prompt.
- After holding it for a few seconds, another prompt pops up, asking you to enable Safe Mode.
- Choose OK, the device will reboot in Safe Mode.
- Now, when your phone has turned on, go to Settings, and then to Apps.
- Here, scroll down and find the app that suffered from the screen overlay problem, select it.
- On the app page, select Permissions.
- On the Permissions page, enable all the permissions the app was asking previously.
- After this is done, reboot the phone.
It's a rather inelegant workaround, but it's the best we have until Google makes the necessary changes to prevent app overlays from interfering with permission dialogues. Newer versions of Android don't appear to suffer significantly from this problem, and it seems to be mainly reported by users of Android Marshmallow.
App-based solutions
There are a couple of apps that exist to address this issue. Because it involves downloading additional software and displaying ads, we still recommend to first try the manual solution detailed above. Still, if it does not work, it could be worth giving these apps a try.
Install Button Unlocker
There's an app called Install Button Unlocker that unlocks the install button caused by the screen overlay error.
${app-jp.sfapps.installbuttonunlocker}When you activate this app, you’ll be asked to allow it access and permission to draw over other apps which is required for it to override issues caused by other apps. Once the Install Button Unlocker is activated, re-try the activities that were previously affected by the overlay error. If it's working correctly, the error should no longer occur.
Alert Window Checker
Then there's Alert Window Checker, which checks if any app is using screen overlay permission.
When you activate it, Alert Window Checker displays a menu of the apps and whether they are using the overlay permission. If they are, you can select that app and then either force close it or uninstall it, depending on whether you want to use the app regularly.
Has this guide helped? If you are still experiencing the error after following our guide, leave a comment, so we can try to help!
A screen overlay is a part of an app that displays over other apps, such as the chat heads in Facebook Messenger.
Go to the Home screen.
Choose Settings.
Scroll down.
Choose the options symbol.
Choose Special access.
Choose Appear on top.
To turn off screen overlay, turn off permissions for all apps.
I have been trying to figure this out for days thank you so much the button unlocker work perfect
URGHHHH!!!...Just literally spent ALL DAY trying to clear my Samsung Galaxy Note 4 of the Screen Overlay Detected issue...NOTHING or ANY OTHER ARTICLES helped with solving this issue....SO GLAD I googled upon this series of problem solving...I had to get all the way to the STEP: Install Button Unlocker….THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart....I CAN NOW USE the APP....that was showing this screen overlay detected block..."HAVE A WONDERFUL DAY"..you are a lifesaver....I KNOW I am HAVING A WONDERFUL NIGHT, NOW....LOL....can't say it enough, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!
I tried every solution I could find on the internet. Nothing worked except a factory reset. Then I discovered that the problem was being caused by having "Select to Speak" active. Duh! (I often turn it on because of my poor vision.)
PS: This app does not appear in the "Apps that can appear on top" list, even when system apps are being displayed.
Hi, i tried the given solutions for samsung Galaxy s6 edge, but nothing worked. I don't have any unusual app. I only use it to call and text , but suddenly the message can't be opened as screen overlay is detected. Any other solution?
I tried to correct the problem and used corrector fluid, which is also used for documents. Then I was very tired to wipe the screen, because it erases quite hard ...
Thank you sooo much for the help. I was ready to get a new phone bc the overlay would not let me do anything! Your directions saved me a lot of money and frustration.
After a Factory data reset, it works well for several days, but the problem came back again. But 'Turning off permission to draw over other apps' in all apps worked for me in my Lenovo Phab 2 Pro.
THANK YOU SO MUCH your guide step by step was A LIFESAVER.
Nothing had worked, and I have been beating my head against this problem for months. Disabling all apps didn't work, but the Install Button Unlocker did the trick, when nothing did.
Thanks alot! Disabling all apps worked for me.
Rarely got the message, and then managed to find the way to the permissions issue. A headscratcher last year was sudden refusal to install APKs, the install screen would show but the button wouldn't function. Turned out the culprit was a blue light reduction app, that apparently overlays some internal controls whenever it's on. Disable it in the notification area, and the device returns to normal. Not sure how many other functions are affected by these things.
THANK YOU SO MUCH THIS WAS A LIFESAVER
Screen overlay problem, I put my problem down to a change button app even uninstalled had same problem as it changed operating system files, did a factory reset all good, don't forget to back up or copy emportant stuff. Hope this helps someone with the same problem so they don't spend weeks trying to fix like I did. Regards Rob
I have an LG Stylo 2, and the 'Install Button Unlocker' is a MIRACLE! I've tried so many step-by-step instructions, and didn't want to mess with safe mode, so I tried your suggested app. Thank you so much! It works perfectly! I'd recommend it to everyone!
I have a Motorola, and the first steps didn't work, but the App installation solved my problem!!! Thank you a lot!!!
For anyone still having this problem this video should be able to help you fix it: search "screen overlay Mr. Robo Carrot" on youtube.
I've had screen overlay issues with Samsung J5 prime. Solution was to uninstall an app ES File Explorer. After weeks of frustration it was as easy as that.
Thank you for information but unfortunately. None have worked for my 5s Samsung.
its a bug not a feature, and a confusingly worded one at that. yes I do have overlay apps but I want/need them and I shouldn't be forced to disable them just to grant a permission to another app. At most this could be a warning: android temporarily had to disable the following overlays in order to change the permission. Why on earth doesn't this stupid dialog name the problematic apps anyway? Frustrating users which such anoying messages will likely make them disable security features like this and thus make them less secure overall.
I have now installed "install button unlocker" and it works like a charm, despite its misleading name. Thank you androidpit for the suggestion.
agree absolutely
Wow !!...thanks alot guys.. installing the button unlocker solved my problem🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌👌👌👌
Thanks a lot I was suffering with this problem along time ago, this solution solved the problem when I uninstalled E.S file application. thanks again.
thanks for this .the safe mode solution worked for me.
Thanks very much - this message has been driving me crazy. Don't know which app was causing it so I just switched all of them off, then allow my camera etc on a newly installed app, then put them back on again
Holy Fucking WOW...
Guys such a big relief...
Twilight was that As*#le in my phone that was causing this trouble...
Such a big relief after getting continuously pissed off by it...
Thanks a tonne team!!!
I do not have ES File Explorer and have this issue. It has taken my Android experience from good to bad. Really this is kind of embarrassing for Android to let a major recurring annoyance like this slip by. So many times I need to do a simple task like open an app or attach a file and "screen overlay detected" pops up, I enter the settings and its not even turned on for that app. Trash.
This article very well helped to me. I could made the changes on my tablet
i just restarted my phone.. problem solved
Install Button Unlocker is great. Irritating Ads though. Need to buy to get rid of the ads.
Same here, on the Note4 uninstall ES file explorer and problem gone.
The problem was indeed due to ES file explorer. It works fine after I uninstalled it. Am using Moto G2
Thanks. as you said, in my case, the ES file explorer was the problem. after uninstalling the apk , the problem got solved.
Hello and thanks a lot. You guys solved my problem. Keep up the good work.
It didn't work for me... any suggestions? I have everything except Facebook messanger turned off right now
I have a Samsung Galaxy 5s
Here one solution:
I have Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016). I tried to fix issue sometime and at the end, I succeed in it. Cause of failure laid in 'Net Booster' application. So I just unticked 'Floating Bubble' checkbox.
If this doesn't apply to you then check setting in this kind of background applications.
Disable ES Swipe from ES Explorer menu page, in case it's turned on. It solved the problem for me
Worked perfectly, thank you.
I disabled es swipe and that solved the problem for me. I don't use ES Explorer that much, and there plenty of other good file management apps out there.
Thanks Viswanadh, it really worked for me and helped me. I am using MOTO G3.
my issue was the same, resolved it perfectly, thanks a lot
Very thanks. I have solved the problem that I have had couple of days and I tried lots of directions and different ways without any result. Thanks a lot .
This was so so helpful, worked like magic!
Thanks so much!!
Samsung Galaxy 5, same issue, toggling on and off did not fix. But uninstalled ES Explorer as recommended in the comments here and the error went away. Fastest fix.
I'm using Mote X Play. I tried all these steps but it dint solve the problem. Is there any alternate solution?
Galaxy J5 Prime ES Explorer was the problem, Uninstalled and the error vanished.
I tried everything on my grand prime+ but still getting that problem i need help...please...
Motorola Turbo Droid. I removed ES Explorer. Problem fixed!!
same here on note 4 got rid of es explorer and solved the screen overlay permissions issue. re installed es and still working as it should
My phone is a Samsung A5 2017 model and I have followed the instructions, even going a far as resetting my phone and I am still getting the screen overlay message. Help this is frustrating!
Got the same problem on a Samsung j7. Switched off ALL "apps that can appear on top", done the one-handed keyboard setting, even tried "safe mode" as some youtube vids suggest (though safe mode seems to prevent some apps appearing). Either this is a virus, or there are hidden apps running in the background that cause the problem. This seems so fundamental to Android 6, surely there is a more comprehensive fix needed.
In my Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) cause of failure laid in 'Net Booster' application. So I just unticked 'Floating Bubble' checkbox and then problem disappeared.
If this doesn't apply to you then check setting in this kind of background applications.
ihave no du speed booster neither ihave the es explore but the problem has persisted someone reply me please its my tecno w3
Thank you so much..in my case twillight was causing the problem..thankss..( user of moto g3)
I have a Moto G 3rd Generation and this problem is driving me mad! I have tried all solutions and still it persists - help
check if you have babel fonts installed on it
force stop that app in the app settings and try again
I did everything suggested and factory reset my phone and it still is doing it
I fixed it!I did a factory reset,problem gone
I have done what you asked and deactivated all my apps but i still get screen overlay detected when I try to open certain apps
ES Explorer was the main and only culprit. I have tried every possible things, but unable to resolve this error...At Last I uninstalled ES Explorer and and the problem gone. Thanks Everyone for writing here
Same here. Time to leave them a bad review lol.
This was my issue also. Every other fix listed here failed but the second I uninstalled ES File Explorer the problem was resolved.
Removed ES File Explorer instant fix. Samsung Galaxy S5 Android 6.0.1
Same here, Galaxy S5 Android 6.01. Removed ES File Explorer and problem solve. What a shame, I liked ES Explorer
No need to remove or uninstall it.. just force stop it from settings..
This worked for me... thanks! It was driving me nuts :(
Just Forced Stop ES File Explorer from settings->Apps->ES file Explorer. This allowed to run all the apps. Thanks!! it works.
Did a Force Stop on ES Explorer. Problem solved on Motorola Droid Turbo. Thanks for the help!
Uninstalled ES File Explorer...... job done
If you're still having issues even with disabling apps, you may be able to bypass the problem by giving the application the necessary permissions yourself.
I have an LGG3 so the wording or availability may differ for others, but I went to Settings > Applications > Configure Apps (from menu dropdown) > App permissions
There I saw a list of permissions (Calendar, Camera, Contacts, Microphone, Phone, SMS, etc). I clicked on the permissions the app I wanted to install couldn't get because of the overlay problem, then enabled the permissions for that app from there.
I'd disabled everything and rebooted my phone twice and couldn't get rid of the overlay detected error, then started digging through my settings until I found this, and it worked.
for those who do not have es file explorer but have du speed booster,
uninstall the du speed booster
After disabling all apps also, found same issue. Frustrated with this.
i do not have most of the 'culprit' apps mentioned here, especially got rid of ES explorer and still get that dam message. I disabled all my apps without any luck. I can't even open a new app even after it was installed because of that message.
frustrated for hours and delete the assistive touch app, i am free again.
samsung c5 pro
...and again, I disabled everything (5 apps at a time) but still got the error. I then uninstalled ES File Explorer and this fixed it.
Samsung Note 4
Thank you So So So much..
I was frustrated being not able to add/edit my contacts on my brand new S7 due to this stupid "screen overlay" error.
Problem solved..!!!!!
ES File Explorer was a culprit. App is good though, I was using since long time on my earlier phones.
Thank You X10 for posting ES File Explorer; pooched 5 hours of my time, not to mention downloading OS upgrade 5X. Learned a lot in settings tho Much Appreciated
Thank you. On my Vodafone Smart Ultra 6 I disabled everything but still got the error. I then uninstalled ES File Explorer and this fixed it. From all of the comments here this app is clearly a problem.
Thanks for the article. Request you to add ES File Explorer as a possible troubling app in the article.
We've added it to our list of potential problem apps in the article. Thanks for the comment!
I tried everything, finally I decided to go into 'Application Manager' and 'Force Stop' Es File Explorer, than walla. Finally!
It's helps. Thanks! Confirm Es File Explorer
My reply is too late no doubt but it may help someone. My phone is a Huawei and I tried every option available that I had found on the web - nothing worked. Then I realised that I had a "floating app" on the screen called " floating dock" which is a shortcut for a number of functions. I disabled this by going to settings, smart assistance and selecting floating dock off. My what's app then worked fine - I wasn't able to download any photos with it but now it is ok, after selecting on for storage in whats app.
I UNINSTALLED ES FILE EXPLORER, AND IT WORKS. THANKYOU FOR THE COMMENTS.
You saved my day! Thanks. It was the ES File Explorer that was troubling.
After uninstalling esexplorer file manager works fine. Thanks for all guys who gave this suggestion.
I had to uninstall my app that filtered blue light on my tablet, now everything is working again!
SOLUTION: this issue was driving me CRAZY. I had to uninstall ES File Explorer as well. You're the BEST.
SOLUTION: uninstall ES File Explorer!! Thanks for all the guys that suggested it!!!
Uninstalling ES File explorer worked for me... probably won't install it again!
Eventually tracked this down to an ES File Explorer 'add in' .. Just disable 'ES swipe' from the main ES File Explorer menu, no need to uninstall it
I don't have ES explorer but I keep getting the screen overlay stuff, it's really frustrating me. Any more advice??
It was ES File Explorer for me too, and when i uninstalled it the messages disappeared. They had started to really bug me and i could not work out what was wrong. i tried disabling all the apps as suggested above but the problem persisted, uninstalling ES File Explorer did the trick. Thanks to all who brought this issue up and shared experiences
Solution: Uninstall/disable ES File Explorer. It worked for me, thanks to all who commented earlier this month.
I struggled for hrs to come out of screen overlay problem on my Lenovo k5 note but after uninstalling ES file explorer shit my phone is ok now. I WL never again install it.
Thx buddy I had same problem with same cell... It worked
Very Easy SOLUTION. Just go to Settings -> Apps -> Configure Apps -> App Permissions
Then select on the list, Then Turn ON all the apps permission..
OK, I do it, and it say again like "screen overlay detected, deny it first..." Such endless cycle. Eventually, I got tired of it, and I did a full reset of that shit phone. And it works for now.
I trying to fix this trouble at Nomi i4510 with Android 6, I have denied permissions to draw over the screen for all apps, including system ones, but no effect. It still say "screen overlay detected". No extra apps installed except Viber. What's more?
Thank you. For me like many others uninstalling ES File Explorer fixed the problem.
Thank you. None of the tutorials explained this and I tried it and it worked. Samsung Note 4.
Thank you for this article. This was a major problem for me and has been driving me crazy ever since I purchased my cell phone at the beginning of the year
ES File Explorer was the problem for me. This was driving me nuts and after reading a couple of articles I remembered one of the last apps that I installed that might be causing the problem. I UNINSTALLED that file explorer and everything is working fine. What a crappy friggin app ... I won't be installing it back any time soon.
That Es file Explorer was the issue for me as well. Will install it back once I can find nougat update
Thank you.
After trying almost everything with no success, I found the issue: I disabled ES File Manager Swipe function and worked!
Thankew it worked for me..
Thank you Carlos. I had followed all the instructions and tried everything. Turned off the swipe and it worked. Brilliant. Thanks you
I cannot find out how to turn it off, this ES File Manager Swipe and it's driving me nuts. I can't use ANY of my apps properly. How can I find it? It's not on my apps list.
do you know how to enable it again sir? I like that stuff, but can't find to get it back on
xP
To me, the issue was persisting even after restricting all the apps to "Draw over other apps". Then, I uninstalled ES file manager, and the problem got resolved. So, if the above steps didn't work, do uninstall all the file management apps and try again. will work mostly..!!
Thanks very much. I deactivated the swipe function on ES file explorer..and it worked for me too.
I have tried absolutely everything and nothing seems to work. Every time an app wants to access my photos or use my location or anything like that it says "give permission for location" and I click yes and then the screen overlay thing pops up and says I have to get rid of that or I can't allow my location. I don't know what to do but I know it is really frustrating me because it restricts me from doing simple things like using snapchat and sending photos on Facebook. PLEASE FIND ME A SOLUTION
For me the culprit was es file manager... When i uninstalled it, sreen overlay problem gone😀😀😀
Thanks for the comment, I uninstalled ES file manager and it worked!
Worked perfectly on my Xperia X compact!
Looks buggy (button in "deactivated gray") but sure did The trick :)
I tried all steps but doesn't work.
Finally I reset my device. Still error is there. I fade up with this.
I must report that the steps listed above have failed me miserably. I have a new Samsung j3 and I have turned them all off n i still get the screen overlay detected message. Please help me out if possible.
I agree, I have the Vodafone smart ultra 6 and this new feature to it I dislike very much. Can't it just be removed?. Apps have worked over other apps on here before. I tried the all ways I've seen on here so far and nothing. Its taken 4 hours to be able to take a photo of time sheet to send for work. Sorry if this is all easy for geek's, but I build buildings not apps
I followed the whole procedure and no apps have screen overlay permission now. It made no difference. It's a Simbans Presto tablet with Marshmallow. Same problem with every file manager I've tried, including ES Explorer, X-plore, and File Manager Plus.
i have assistive touch app, i disable draw other apps and the screen overlay problem gone, thanks for the tips😸
Hi, I have an itel1513 android 6.0 marshmallow. I've tried everything and still can't fix the Screen overlay error problem?? Please help me. Thank youx
All of you guys can solve this problem by a very simple step first switch off your phone then again switch on your phone with long pressing the volume down key then your phone work in safe mode after it you can give all permission to your apps then switch off your phone and again switch on your phone without pressing any key thanks for reading and go for it if you like pls like it
Thank you. I tried all the steps listed above for my Samsung S5. No apps showed overlay permissions so that didn't work. I couldn't find one handed operation so that didn't work. Booting in safe mode, setting permissions, then rebooting did the trick. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much. Been dealing with this for almost a month .
Du battery saver is one of the culprit for this error, just press force stop it will be fine.
For me, it was CM Locker that caused the overlay. This sucks because the built-in phone security lock app in my Samsung S5 has a tendency to freeze and not allow me to unlock it so I don't use it.
Galaxy S5, Android 6.01. Tried all the steps above but no change. ES Swipe was the cause of my problem.
How did you disable ES SWIPE? I can't find it anywhere in my apps at all!
In Moto g3 mobile with Android 6.0.1,
When you open an App if you face the "Screen Overlay Detected" Error pop up.
First switch off the mobile.
Then Press the power button ON which is on the side of the mobile, then press and hold the volume control down bottom till the mobile Desktop screen is shown to boot in the safe mode.
Go to settings-> Apps -> Select the App which you had faced the above error popup.
Click on "Permissions" then grant the permissions for the listed items like "Camera","Contacts",etc...
Then swich off the mobile, then Switch ON normally(DONT press and hold the volume down button),
Open the app then you wont see the error.
It works 100%..
Yes! I have an S6 Edge, so the procedure for booting into safe mode is slightly different, but booting into safe mode is the only good workaround I have been able to find. Thank you.
just find the floating notification apps that appeared on your screen. disable it. then your problem solved!
THey are already off. That was the first thing i tried.
Not if you don't have any.
I have a Samsung Galaxy s6 Active and this worked once but now I have almost very thing disabled, and it's showing screen overlay error but when I try to turn off any permissions to try and fix it it brings up another screen overlay error. It's beginning to piss me off and I have no idea own to fix the damn thing.
I have been suffering with the screen overlay issue for some time after buying a redmi note 4....thanks to Android pit I was able to solve the problem... You guys rock!!
Registered just to let it be known that in addition to security apps, it seems that apps that "boost" phone performance cause this message to come up too. If you force stop or uninstall the App, the screen overlay message will not come up.
Found a solution that worked for Sony XA ultra. It may work for other devices.
1.Settings
2. Apps
3. Gear icon (top right)
4. Draw over other Apps
5. Options (three-dots button top right)
6. Reset APP Preferences
7. Tap Reset Apps in confirmation
I did this, step by step with want is said here and other places, and yet, it is still telling me to turn off the screen overlay. HTC One M8. Recent apps, Transformers, Arrow, Navy Federal, Youtube Studio, Hellofresh, SiriusXM. Error was discovered while trying to use Youtube Studio app. I'll go and uninstall that to see if it is the fault. (moments later) I have restarted the phone and the error went away. However, reading further in the comments while waiting for the phone to reboot, turning off all the overlay permissions REQUIRES A RESTART of the phone. So.... either one of these fixed my phone. It works now.
My screen overlay is not disabling
*Galaxy s6 Edge - I tried it all of the above and nothing worked. Finally, I found the app causing the problem. I had the "360 Security - Antivirus Boost" app installed and notice under permissions allowed it had all the permissions ON so automatically I realized the app causing the "Screen Overlay" so I immediately uninstalled the app and guess what...the darn "Screen Overlay Detected" message was gone!
Thank you this worked for me after days of trying
I didn't notice the "all the permissions ON" setting of 360 Security, but after turning all the screen overlay programs to off, restarting my phone and still having the error, I just took a guess at what might be causing the problem and uninstalled 360 Security and it fixed my problem too. I'll look for another virus scanner now. 360 Security has too many 'features' creates too many messages to clean my phone and is covered in adverts.
I disabled all my apps but my phone still won't give permission for location access and says there's still an overlay somewhere. I'm getting really pissed off and don't know what to do. PLEASE HELP!!! None of these methods are working!!!!
Same happened with me. Then I found that I had enabled ES Swipe in ESFile Explorer and disabling from Es file explorer made this error away. Even when I disabled it in the draw over app settings it didn't worked, so I suggest you check if you have enabled any apps swipe settings disable it from that app and try again.
Thanks it worked great after doing that
I had the same issue, I followed the same steps as told in this article but the problem still existed. But then I read a comment here about disabling ES swipe. I tried it and it worked. So thank you for the suggestion.
Did you check the SYSTEM apps as well? Those and the DU Swipe in my Battery app worked for me. (Sorry if the system appps were obvious to you, it took me a while to catch it. And, I wrote down all of the apps I changed so I could get back to original config.) Good Luck
I've noted and disabled all the the apps that draw over screen accept the ones that are blocked like systems apps but still I'm unable to give permission. I'm really frustrated now as I can't even save a contact in my phone as it requires permission to storage which I'm unable to give.
Any other suggestions?
once you disable all the apps, close all your apps down and reset your phone. It worked for me.
I can't get passed step 1 on my phone (Motorola Droid Maxx 2). I put in "draw" and it acts like it's trying to find a wifi connection. Does anyone know how to fix overlay screen problems on this phone? Nothing so far will open.
I uninstalled 360 security and it worked and then reinstalled it
Thank you!! I've been trying to fix this for 2 days. That finally did the trick.
360 security? I hope it will work!
Oh my gosh i literally was spending two to 5 hours and realized and didn't know that 360 security was making my troubles. thx
omfg THANKS DUDE IVE BEEN STRESSING OUT
Mine was 360 security. I'm pretty tech savvy and I even broke down and called samsung and they were no help. So I factory reset my phone and the problem was still their. I read some comments and deleted 360 security and Its back to normal. Thanks everyone
Thank you so much, Ohmboy! Uninstalling 360 did the trick. My recently acquired Samsung phone was almost rendered unusable by this—well, that's maybe exaggerating a bit, but I couldn't even use Skype, so it was pretty bad. I guess I'll be looking around for another anti-virus app to replace 360 now...
Uninstalling 360 Security worked for me too! Thank you so much, I was beginning to give up on ever getting this fixed.
i did exactly what u said . even after disabling all apps am getting this problem. please help me . even for the apps which permission was already given also asking again. i can't even use any apps . please help guys
At Google Play, download...'Alert Window Checker'. This app will tell you which apps are currently using an OVERLAY and at least one of them will be your culprit. Once you find out which one it is, temporarily disable 'Screen Overlay' for that app and go make your permission changes etc. It's not labeled 'Screen Overlay' on my S7.
If your not sure how to get to the right place, this page can help:
h t t p s://www.howtogeek.com/271519/how-to-fix-the-screen-overlay-detected-error-on-android/
(remove the spaces in the link between 'https')
Yes, it works just install "Alert Window Checker" then it shows the apps which actually overlay the screen, just turn ON or OFF that apps permissions in setting, also uninstall 360 Antivirus app then problem will be solved.
I am unable to find the app which causes the screen overlay...this is annoying! Can anyone help me on this?
I have this problem but I am unable to find the prob app what should I do?
In my case, what was causing the problem was Google Photos, which had been updated this afternoon. Once I went to the PlayStore and realized it had been updated, clicked on "Uninstall" and my problem was instantly solved. Nothing else worked, not even disabling "Permit draw over other apps" for every single app did the trick. Only solution was uninstalling Google Photos.
Yes yes mine was being caused by DU battery but after unistalling it everything is perfect now thanks Amanda Powers
I m using moto g turbo and I still have the same problem!!! I tried all your solutions but nothing works.... Due this I can't use any app.. please help me!!!
I still have the problem! It didn't change the issue at all! Tried it again and again...
You're AWESOME!! Worked like a charm! Did exactly what you said to do, which you explained PERFECTLY, and problem fixed! By the way, just as you called it, the culprit was the app that adjusted my cell phone brightness. You did good! Thank you so much! Now I can get on with my life :)
It worked thank you so much ,😘😘😘😘
If you do not want to waste time finding out which floating app causes the displaying of the "Screen Overlay Detected" dialogue in order to temporarily disable the floating app to draw over other apps and then have to re-enable the overlay permission of the floating app after you let Android grants the required permissions of your newly installed app by selecting "ALLOW" in the permission dialogue, or the annoying "Screen Overlay Detected" dialogue still pops up every time you select "ALLOW" in the permission dialogue after you confirm all floating apps overlay permission have been disabled(this happens to my phones sometimes when I tested my app), all you need to do is to grant the required permission of your newly installed app yourself directly using the Settings app. The steps are:
1. Open Settings App
2. Tap on "Apps" to open the Apps page
3. Scroll down the list of installed apps to find your newly installed app and tap on it to open the App Info page of the newly installed app. You would see "No permissions granted" under Permissions
4. Tap on "Permission" to open the App permissions page of the newly installed app, tap on all the switches to grant all required permissions to the newly installed app.
5. Return to your installed app, if the "Screen Overlay Detected" dialogue is still displayed, tap elsewhere (not on the dialogue) on your app screen and the dialogue would disappear, if the permission dialogue is displayed, just select "ALLOW" and it would disappear.
It's not that simple I've tried that on my T Mobile LG G4 as soon as I try to switch the permission of my storage to contacts Screen overlay detected appears again.
guys, when I search for "draw" I found nothing. pls help, thanks
I had disabled everything but the error would still pop up. I figured out it was the DU battery saver app and as soon as i unistalled it everythong worked again! this was on my samsung s6. Hopfully this helps someone else!
Yes it does! I think mine was the DU battery saver app too. Thanks
This did the trick with a moto X when we deleted DU battery saver.
I had 2 DU apps on my HTC ONE M8 after uninstalling them both the problem was solved and no more annoying adverts as well. Thanks!
Same here. I uninstalled DU battery saver and everything started working. Thank you
I disabled the overlay with all my apps, restarted the phone but am still get the overlay error message. I don't have any of the trouble apps mentioned (Drupe, CleanMaster, Lux and Twilight etc) and haven't installed any new apps recently. It just happened for no reason. I have also tried uninstalling a bunch of my apps. I am reluctant to reset my phone back to factory settings in case this doesn't fix the issue. I have a Motorola Moto G. Any other suggestions would be appreciated!
I just deleted a bunch of apps (Facebook, Messenger, What's App etc) and restarted my phone and it has fixed the issue... Finally! Hallelujah! ;-)
I disabled the overlay with all my apps, restarted the phone but still get the overlay error message.I have an LG G3
I was trying to free up space. I reset the FB app. And as such the permissions were reset too. When that happened, I had also setup OneNote, which comes with a new feature of OneNote Badge. Well that was an error in itself. SO I tried disabling and enabling App Permission for FB still the same. SO I disabled the OneNOte Badge App and it was grand. So I looked the issue up and it's actually a known error. So will have to submit an error to Microsoft as I really wanna use that feature. But the article did help in terms of Identification.
I tried all your suggestions and still has not resolved this issue. I have a Sumsung S5
Restart your phone. It works on me.
Thank you very much, the above guide has solved my issue...make sure to restart the phone!!!
Samsung Note 4
Hey,
Just to let you know guys that Messenger app (Facebook) was the culprit in my case. I disabled only that and the problem was gone.
Cheers.
I was having this issue for two days, and I read your comment and it fixed my issue. Facebook Messenger was the culprit all along! Thanks!
Glad to be of help! Cheers.
It is amazing to me that android is the number one smartphone operating system. it is the biggest piece of crap ever EPIC FAil GOOGLE. I should have bought a iPhone which actually works unlike Android!
You are such a fucking idiot..

>Now list of apps whose screen overlay is enabled will appear…
>Disable /Turn Off For All App…
Then Your Problem Must Be Solved…
DOESNT WORK ON MY NEW MOTO G4 PLAY
Try the above steps and restart your phone. It works on me.
The suggestions did not work on a Motorola Moto X. This is by far the most annoying error I have had to deal with. Please provide a solution for a Moto X mobile. Thank you!
My son has a Moto X and turning off screen overlay for all applications did not work. Then we removed an app called DU battery saver and that fixed it. It's likely that app or another causing the problem.
I just bought a new Moto X and it's not 30 days quite yet. My Bluetooth keeps changing from the audio not being checked, only way to fix is shut down. That take 3 min. each time. Now I have this issue. I'm researching phones to buy and think I'm gonna send this back. So frustrated.
From reading all of these posts, I figured that one or more of my installed Apps was causing the problem, and none of the Apps suggested was the bad one. So, I just started uninstalling 3 or more Apps at a time and restarting my phone (suggestion from one of the posts) . Not sure which one did the trick, but it's fixed now!
On my Nexus 7 2012 it was the File Manager HD that I had to disable screen overlays. Then all was well.
For me it was the "Twilight" app. This app changes the screen color temperature to reduce blue light at dusk. Uninstalled the app and that solved the problem.
No worse solution i found yet!
No this hasn't help I've done all the above I've switched everything off then it tell me to give permission for storage I click on permission for storage and it tells me screen over lay detected all I want to do is access word to read an attachment
I suddenly started having this problem today on my LG Stylo.
Now i can't install a new app and get it to run without being told to turn it off.
I also can't use some current apps as well.
I've shut off permissions for all the apps listed including system ones.
No help. Same message pops up
Even went into safe mode and tried.
Nothing.
Really frustrated!
The fix for me was uninstalling FileManager HD.
Motorola Moto x pure edition 2015
Still facing the same problem in Motorola phone even after following the steps. Kindly help. It's an emergency
Seems like an error with the sharing bit, not screen overlay. If you go to the sharing app (in my case it's google drive) and try to upload the file directly, it doesn't show that error.
"If there’s no obvious cause, disable everything", thank you ❤ that was it! Great work thank you very much.
I did everything step by step. And I'm still getting the same damn error message. it's bad enough now that it won't even let me save a picture
Uhm, I don't know if this would help but when you're on "draw over apps" the top right corner where the settings are (three vertical dots) it might say "show system" that would mean your system is hidden so therefore you didn't disable all apps, so show your system , and follow the steps given.
i was having the same problems on my new samsung galaxy A7 2017 , i have done disabling all of them and even uninstalling facebook messenger and whatsapp but still getting that error 'screen overlay " problem. what should i do now , please help. i cant attach a pic on facebook messenger or go live because of that "screen overlay" problem.
very helpful fixed my problem
I follow the steps but still facing an issue please help me i have Samsung Galaxy A5 2016 Model# SM-A500F and i had updated 08/02/2017 before updating Marshmallo 6.0.1 version i used lollipop 5.0 something version no not sure it was working fine but after updating this version my is useless for me i am requesting you to please advise me how do sort out this issue or how do i revert back on old OS before releasing Marshmallo 6.0.1
One more thing which is very important for your customers that if the any new release have some bugs please do not uploaded on cloud because if some one have any resources without phone so he will be in big problem same as me.

Thanks & Regards,
Sajjas
The above steps did not work for me on the ZTE Grand X4. Solved the issue by uninstalling DU Battery Saver. No longer getting the error message now.

Try removing draw app permissions from file manager app. Along with Drupe,CleanMaster, Lux,Twilight, file manager could be a reason.
Cheers✌
if you restart device then quickly go to new app that needs permissions it works but leave it to long it comes up with error..
I have a Galaxy S5 neo. I received the screen overlay detected message. I have been trying do everything you said before but it does not work. This is the first time that this happens. Could you tell me what else I can do?

Did you try removing draw permissions of file manager app? Along with Drupe,CleanMaster, Lux or Twilight. Try that.
Cheers ✌
Thanks for info as soon as I uninstalled DU Battery Saver no problems!
It worked for me as well. So many people r facing problems with DU battery saver, I wonder what the concerned people are doing about this?
yes! uninstalled it and bam! problem solved!
I uninstalled DU Battery Saver in my Moto X Pure Edition. Voila! The screenoverlay detected error is gone for good!
Great find. I tried making every adjustment, inc. turning off screen overlay functionality for every app - nothing. I removed the DU battery saver and everything cleared up. Odd that I had the app for over two months, then one day most apps lost the ability to their job.
Same here had app for around 6 months all of a sudden this happened.
Happened to me too! maybe it updated and now has that odd feature or whatever!
same here!
Another problem app - "shutapp" (actualy task killer with buble) - uninstalation solved problem on my Samsung Note4...
all i wanna say it's just fuck samsung fuck galaxy fuck Android sun of bitches !
FIXED: All of this is fine, but when it did not work, I found the solution. Sure, I turned of all of the "draw over other apps" permissions, and still no joy. There were no Facebook bubbles. So I looked at the drop down list of notifications, and there was one or two that never disappeared. So I cleared all that I could by swiping, and I tapped the ones that would not move, and I get into their settings, and I turned them off, or turned off their permissions. And bingo, problem solved. My phone is a Motorola Moto G3 Android.
Did you turn off all the "draw over other apps" ?
Have been trying to use excel 9n my galaxy s7 by screen overlay message keepsopping up even after disablING it on all other apps
Like Facebook and messenger. Getting very frustrated. Please help
FIXED: see my message
Thank you! Exactly the help and info I needed, none that I didn't. (pairing a Fitbit)
I have turned off every overlay even system ones and still get the overlay issue.
Try uninstalling any recent app that u updated or installed which draw permissions, apps like CleanMaster, Lux, twilight, file manager, du battery saver or similar apps. Should work.
Cheers ✌
Hi guys I have this overlay issue after downloading messenger.
I tried all the above steps but am still getting the message even when I turned all apps off.
I have now been denied access to photos and video
HELP
Hi there, I have a Samsung galaxy s4note, I have followed all instructions referring to the screen overlay detected, but to no avail, could you please help me with this problem
Have a Samsung S6 edge and the overlay issue was resolved disabling the Du battery saver and rebooting the phone
Thank you for posting this. That fixed it and saved my sanity today!
My problem occurred after the latest Samsung-Android update 1-2017. DU Battery saver is the problem, I uninstalled, did a restart and all is good. I have used DU Battery saver for a year without a problem so I am guessing it is related to last Samsung- Android update.

Same problem here. Already try above tips but still same. Uninstalled DU apps & everything back to normal. Using Samsung S5. Dont forget to enable back the permission manually if you already disable it.

Hi, if you are using facebook messenger just turn off the chat head and try if the permission is there.
I have a Motorola Droid Turbo, followed all of the steps, but it continues to give me the overlay error.
Same here. Motorola Droid Turbo; did all the steps it hasn't fixed it. I can't even open my photo gallery, which doesn't use any sort of overlay.
I did all you told us but the screen overlay continues to appear. Please help me
Thanks a Ton! I figured the Asus Messenger App was messing with my phone. Deactivated the app and it worked.
Thank you very much indeed. It worked on my Samsung A5.
We're glad to hear the solution worked for you!
I have a Samsung Galaxy J7. I have a magnifying glass app bubble that I think is causing my problem. I have disabled everything else. How do i get rid of This? If I press and hold, it will move around, but not go away. No trash can appears either. Help. Please.
You can't it's a system app
Hello! I'm using tecno w3 I had the same problem! Way shld I do? Plus it's really query.
Thanks, it really amazing it work well on tecno camon c9
The culprit for my S6 edge is the Easy Touch app (the blue circle). I uninstalled the program, then voila everything works properly now. They were right, you just have to find this 1 app that is causing this "screen overlay" message pop up. Goodluck guys, it was such a pain in the ass.
Hello, I have a Samsung A7. It was good everything till last week when I started to show screen overlay permission error. I have deleted almost every apps which could cause such problem as explained above. But, it is still not working. Please help. Should I reset to factory setting?
Yes, factory reset is the best thing you can do. Once done, if problem still persist find this one app that is causing the "screen overlay" message to pop up. Mine is the Easy Touch app. Uninstalled it, then phone is working properly now.
Hello. I had the same problem for so long time. I just uninstalled Du Speed Booster and all is ok now. Magic. And weird. 'Couse Du Speed... is good cleansing app.
Hi! Did you reinstall Du Speed Booster after the problem was solved?
Mine problem was DU Battery Saver. Unistalling solved annoying problems
WOW THANX!!! I been trippin out over this problem---just started 2 days ago for no reason. Ive spent hours on google and even went to the phone place and they couldn't help me either. I was bout to have to do a factory reset cuz I tried everything and nothing works. Saw your post and uninstalled DU Battery Saver app and problem solved!!! (Galaxy S5)
Still not working......please help! I can't use my phone anymore if this is not solved!
I had the same issue even after disabling all the apps' settings.
I uninstalled ES file explorer and the issue got resolved.
Try to remember any app that pops every time you do something like clicking a pic or something (mine was ES file explorer).
Disable/uninstall the app and then try again.
Still not working on my ASUS please help me...
thnkss bro good advice..for me it was an app named wi-fi up
Galaxy S 6 user, this was driving me nuts, uninstalled Cle@n M@ster and B@ttery S@ver, then it worked! Thanks for the advice!
DU battery saver caused the issue deleted same all issues gone Thanx Alesea Rankin for the help
I remove those app: Lux and Twilight and I didn't solve my Screen Overlay....
finally deleted DU Battery Saver and it finally worked. must have missed that one.
I've delefed apps, turned off apps to no avail!!!!! Trying to download courses from Garmin Connect to father's Note 5. for his Christmas gift, vivoactive watch. Help!!!!
Excellent post, immediately solved the problem. For me it was Twilight screwing up the phone.
Not working on my Samsung S5. Tried all the steps. Removed cleanmaster too. Can anyone help. Whatsapp unable to download any videos or attachments.
Thanks! It worked fine Samsung S5.
The app that was creating the problem was "data usage monitor".
A quite useful and serious app that shows also an overlay bar with a graph of data traffic values in real time.
Tanx bro...
You fix my problem ...
"Data usage monitor" was the problem...
Really, marshmallow sucks. I never had these problems with kit Kat!
Jesus took me almost 16hrs to get to the bottom, combination of messenger and Go Launcher Z.... i suspected the latter and was so freaking relieved once it was confirmed.
So many causes.. Would those saying "that fixed it" pls say the poster's name they refer to.
For me I installed 'Alert Window Checker' which showed apps using screen overlay, but I didn't want to delete them. I then installed 'Install Button Unlocker' (also at play store). I turned Install Button Unlocker on at the top of its screen (switch turns red) then the much hated "Screen Overlay Detected" stopped appearing in other apps. Nothing else worked for my S7.
Thanks Jeff this worked for me. That was so annoying I thought my honest as broke
Thanks. I'm going to try your suggestion.
Finally something that worked. ITs a shame that this has to be done to solve it. I tried everything before this one, i tried with disable all programs in "apps that can appear on top" and lots of other things but nothing worked.
I'm using samsung j2 pro 2016.
I was facing the same issue with many of the apps. And as i uninstalled twilight i was able to turn on amd off the overlay issues.
A lot of thanks to the android pit team.
Had the same issue, and now I can't even give back the permissions to some apps even after following the different troubleshooting steps. I am using Samsung s5
I am using Samsung Galaxy A7, the one-handed keyboard setting was the root cause for mine. Deactivated it by going to Settings> Advanced features > One-handed operation.
Disabled all overlay apps, no luck. Additionally uninstalled Cle@n M@ster and problem resolved!
yes, confirm work !
I've already disable all the overlay apps but it's still the same, help pleeaasee
Please remove file manager, cm, facebook messenger, zapya, du booster (if you have any of this in your handset)
Thank you so much...I thought I had tried everything, but deleting du booster worked like a charm.
Thanks a lot, its work after I uninstall DU Booster!
Same here starting to get angry at my new phone :(
Same here starting to get angry at my new phone :(
For me it was Zapya a file sharing app
Greetings, Please mine is Gionee mini m5. I have tried all to get off this "screen overlay detected" but all to no avail. can some please help? (ID- 7438733)
I have a moto z stopped all of screen overlay apps still have the problem!
This is terrible I can't use any apps because of this overlay £700 for this phone and it can't even function properly wtf I want to know how to stop it asking while being able to use my apps not turn permission off for 40 apps just to turn them back on again 5 seconds later
This CM is the culprit! It has soooo many restrictions, hence I uninstalled it (and everything is okay). It take me 24hrs figuring out and I was so frustrated. It tested my patience.
I took CM off and it worked for me too. Thank you
What is "CM"???
That is Cleen-Massster
Messenger seemed to be the culprit for my new S7. Removed and reinstalled, all ok
thanks! I had soooo many to choose from...but messenger was the first thing I tried due to your comment here. Thanks!
i am a samsung user. did try all the steps. but it still shows up:( i dont know what to do....
I have a Samsung S7 Edge and went through the steps and still have the problem. I double-checked all the steps and still have the problem. Curse Google and their elitist mindset...
I had to close the app I was trying to use, and then open it again after these steps (messenger was the culprit for me), and then it worked. But I had to close the app first.
I find myself in the same situation as others. I have a motorola turbo and have followed instructions with no resolution. I do not have or see any of the offending apps reported on my phone. But I am unable to use many basic apps... contacts, camera, calendar etc because of this issue. Hoping a fix and instructions are provided soon!
Samsung S6 here. I've discovered it's the Facebook messenger app that's causing the problem on mine. The app has only started causing the he problem for the past few days, but it's frustrating as hell. I want messenger to have overlay permission. I'm guessing there was a recent update to the app?
I have tried everything, including suggestions in the comments. noticed that Amazon and Google apps still said Yes even though it was in the "off" position under permission. any suggestions??? I use Red Stamp app on a regular basis!
Side Apps Bar - Edge was the problem for me... It took a lot of trial and error to work it out.
Well what's the point in spending all that money on a phone with edge capabilities
Hi,
i have LG magna phone and i am too facing the overlay detected issue. but the solution given above is not working for me. can you please help me over here
I have a Samsung Galaxy S5. My problem was DU Speed Booster. I deleted it and now I can edit my permissions. SO HAPPY!
I found that 'Twilight', the screen dimming app, causes this problem a lot. I fixed the problem on my HTC 10 by disabling screen draw for Twilight, then setting up the other app before enabling screen draw for Twilight again.
This worked, thanks!
Yes I uninstall Twilight and still have that problem....Sumsang support remote into my phone and was not able to solve the Screen Overlay issue, so they suggest that I backup my app and data and wipe out my phone and that solve my screen overlay issue.....this is on a Samsung S6 Active.
I just found out that CM was the problem. I uninstalled it...thanks alot Galaxy note 4
Lg g5 and nothing is working tried it all still says the same plus the bubble wont switch when you tap on them.
Dont have any of those apps that are suggested to delete.
I'm also having such a hard time with my LG g5. Let me know if you figure this out.
Same with me :( Pls let me know if you figure this out
Remove file manager, cm, messenger. Hope it might work :)
Dude try uninstalling "file manager. In my G5 and X Cam it was the culprit!
Hi, for my Samsung Galaxy J7 Prime, I first activated to "safe mode". Activating on safe mode may vary on diff kinds of Phones so just google it, just like I did. :)
After activating to safe mode, I went to "Settings>Applications>Applications Manager". You will see all the applications installed in your phone, and will be able to disable and unable buttons on the permissions tab because you're on safe mode. You can see the permissions tab after clicking the application i.e FB Messenger. When you're done in the permissions, you may now restart your phone and things will work out smoothly. It did to mine! :)
Galaxy S5 , deleted DU speed booster app . Problem solved
UNINSTALL CM APP IT WORKS
My downloades apps are not showing up, so i am not able to disable them.... click on show system apps too. But of course they dont show up either. Therefore... i am not able to disable them.... like whatsapp, skype, waze....
I suggest looking through all your apps and seeing which affects display or anything core to the phone. I had this exact problem so i deleted CM Locker which interacts with my lock screen and BA BAM THAT GODDAMN POPUP STOPPED
Thanks Found out it was the CleanMaster that needed to allow some permits to the other apps.
SOLUTION: At least this worked for me. Just close all the apps and then retry the permission change that triggered the overlay error. When I say "close all the apps" -- on my S7, i have that "close all" option whenever I hit the "recents" button to the left of the home key. Bingo.
Okay. I've had about enough. My phone doesn't show the apps that are causing the problem. It'll show any other apps, system apps included, but never the app causing the problem. I've enabled permission, dissabked, rest all permissions, and even factory reset my phone. I've looked everywhere but I haven't been able to find someone with my problem.
I can'tcan't go to settings, and I can't fix it by disabling it because it doesn't even show me the app as an option too. Quite frankly I'm pissed; because this artical is the closest I got to an answer.
Samsung S5 phone
Constant issue now, all of a sudden, preventing use of FB messenger, Messages, chat apps, everything. Even a couple of games that worked flawlessly for months.
Now, permission requests popping up allover the place, and NO apps able to get permissons answered due to the ever present Overlay detector problem, with no resolution.
I couldn't care less if something else has an overlay, JUST DO IT ANYWAY.
I am having the same problem as you. With a Samsung s7 edge.... not showing the apps under "Apps that can appear on top"
Moto G4 4th gen, Android 6.0.1.
I disabled the overlay for all apps and still had the problem. Then I decided to uninstall CleanMaster. That appears to have fixed the problem.
Nothing worked for me, except using "Install Button Unblocker" application...
I just turned my phone off and then back on, it clears the memory that ay, and it now works
Great Help! it fixed my phone. Thanks a lot! Kudos!
Okay, I've been struggling with this for two weeks. I tried everything else on this thread and nothing worked. I have a Samsung S5 and this is what I did:
<Settings><Application Manager>tap on whatever app the "screen overlay popup" message said was giving you grief about (mine was my gallery, among a few others)<Gallery><Permissions>Turn on the permissions that the message was warning you about (I did all of them just to be safe).
Best solution is to leave the app, go to settings, Apps, find the app that you want to give permission and enable it thru the permission settings.
Than force close the app and open it again.
It always works for me.
I've disabled everything and it is not resolved, what do I do? Phone: Samsung Galaxy S7, Android Version: 6.0.1
How do i disable those apps?
you should click on each app on the draw over the apps and turn them off manually. works for my phone.
Receiving a "turn off/on screen overlay" message when youclick on an app? Even after you gave it permission!?
DO NOT FACTORY RESET YOUR PHONE!!
Go to SETTINGS >BACKUP and RESET> RESET SETTINGS
*your phone will restart and wala!* it worked for my NOTE 5!! I didn't Uninstall any of my apps, Didn't have to turn any of them off, didn't lose any media. Nothing.. see if this works for your phone
Doesnt fucking work, also you have to put back in all the customized settings you had.
This process worked everyone but it resets everything wallpaper theme etc. But then u can apply permissions easy and no more hassle. Thanks Jasmine 🤗
I've disabled everything and the problem still is showing up, what do I do? (Application that is showing the problem: MAME4droid (0.139u1), Phone Model: Samsung Galaxy J7, Android Version: 6.0.1)
I am going through the same hardship as most of the people here. I cant send or read messages, watch videos, use my apps..the setting overlay pops up..ive tried everything and it still does not work..i even went to the Verizon store and they couldn't figure it out..i feel like throwing the phone at a wall or something..it is so frustrating.
Twilight was the cause of my problem. Thank you so much.
bluelight filter was my problem
My S5 Cannot Do That.Eg.Gallery I Have Already Done All The Steps And It Still Dosent Works. Please comment
The one handed operation was my problem. Thank you!
It didn't work
Just install Alert Window Checker from the Play Store, run it and you show you which apps are running the screen overlay feature. Stop one by one and try to reproduce the error over and over until you find the faulty app, then you may uninstall it. In my case it was a hotspot app. You're welcome 😉
superb buddy thanks! :) ;)
Awesome!! This is the only solution that worked for me. Thanks a Million :)
This is the only thing that worked! Thanks a million!
Thanks!!!!!!
For my Samsung Note 5 I updated a new system yesterday and this screen overlay thing began to show up, i cant even use google so i start to uninstall my apps until i found out that the problem was caused by a input method editor, lol half of my apps were gone i am so sad.
This is also a piece of advice to all who had problems as well.
Phone: Sony X
Go setting
Go accessibility
Turn off everything
Turn on switch access (On)
I solved mine.... from this way..
Damn piss off whole day......
it works on my z3! thanks
Thank you. Problem solved.
Thanks, but it solves the problem only for a while. Then I have to do the whole process again and again whenever I want to use Gallery or SNote... I have done this process at least fifty times in the recent days.. It's an insane...
This is the 3rd or 4th notification I have received from androidpit and like i have said before, i tried the suggestions here and have not had any success...
The same with me; this is NOT helping.
Slightly different problem. On my Samsungs S5 Androdi 5.0, I do not have an ON/OFF toggle in apps permission. I would like to change some permissions that the apps have but I can't . Has anyone come across this problem. I' ve seen others with older samsung like S4 having the same problem , but I have also seen other android phones, not the latest spec that have this feature. Any ideas ?
have you gotten in touch with Samsung?
I am in a special kind of HELL with this problem. Life360 App keeps telling me to 'Tap to turn on Location Permissions'. Do that and get 'Location Permissions are Off: ...To update, please toggle Location on under App Info > Oermissions > Location. So I tap the 'Change' button to do that.. Takes me to Application Info. Click on Permissions (it says 'No permissions allowed'). Opens App Permissions screen; all are turned off. Try to turn on Location and get 'Screen Overlay detected' So click 'Open Settings' and the App in question is not there... ARGH!!! I am using a Samsung Galaxy A3.
On Nexus 5, Google Allo is giving this problem! How does one go about avoiding it? Thanks.
Are you the author of the app in question? If you are, I have no idea if its been solved only because i would have to buy the app again and run it. I was told that I could only get one refund on an app in question. is there any other way of checking out your comments? Thank you
please help me samsung j7
Thanks, but I see your work around mainly consists of a phone. My problem is with a tablet Nexus7-13. Aside from that I followed your steps the best way I can and got as far as draw over other apps. Could you define what a Bubble looks like, or am I being stupid? Shape of a Balloon? Anyhow, I do not have on my system any of those apps you mentioned that may be the cause of the overlay problem. ..also, I cannot repeat the process with the same app, cause I paid for it and was told that I had an hour to get a refund and only can get one refund...so I doubt if I am going to d/l it again. Is there any other way to check to see if i still have the overlay problem?
follow this 2 step to solve the screen overlay problem:
Step 1
Use the Safe Mode feature on your Samsung Galaxy S7 to access the operating system with default software. Use Safe Mode if you have installed something on your S7 that no longer allows the device to start successfully. Just use these steps.
Turn On Safe Mode
1. Power the phone off.
2. Once the phone is off and all lights are emitting, press and hold the “Power” button to turn the S7 back on.
3. When the Galaxy logo appears on the screen, press and hold the “Volume Down” button.
4. Continue to hold the “Volume Down” button until the phone completely boots. You will see the words “Safe Mode” appear in the lower left corner of the screen if you performed the steps properly.
Step 2
Now go to <Settings>, <Application>,< Application manager>,<tap on individual app>,<permission>, <App requesting right of access>, enable / disable permissions. Power off and restart the phone.
While in Safe Mode, you may not be able to use certain features or applications. The device is in a “bare bones” state where just the essential software is loaded. This allows you to get into the device quickly, enable or disable whatever you need to, then restart.
Turn Off Safe Mode
To turn off Safe Mode, powering down, then back on should do the trick. Be sure to power completely down.
Some Galaxy S7 models may require you to press and hold the “Volume Down” button during start up in the same manner as enabling it to exit Safe Mode.
If you continuously start in Safe Mode and cannot get out of it, a malfunctioning app may be causing the problem. You may have to uninstall apps until you track down the one that is causing the problem.
This post applies to the SM-G930F and SM-G935F (Edge) Models of the Samsung Galaxy S7 smartphone.
You can forgot other method eg. delete app like DU Battery saver etc etc. i already did it on my S7 it work no more screen overlay problem. :)
This method the disadvantage is when you install a new app and got the screen overlay problem you have to redo the whole process again start from step 1.
This is the solution that worked for me. Thanks a lot. It was so frustrating. Now can you help me get my soft keys back? Marshmallow sucks.
That's exactly helped me. Mine was Note 5, it worked.
I had this problem just the last few days and it drove me mad, because I had it a few moths ago also. After a bit of searching and pondering I came up with the screen overlay permitted for DU Battery Saver. In this app there is a feature called DU Swipe. It is a screen overlay that gives you the possibility to set a couple of shortcuts on your screen that you can reach by swiping from a corner of the screen. I turned it off...........problem gone.
So DU Battery Saver..................turn off the feature: DU Swipe. (Find it in the menu of DU Battery Saver)
Dude, you are a genius! Thanks man
Using Motorola Droid Turbo 2, disabled ALL overlay permissions and still had the problem. I am NOT using DU Battery Saver, but I did have DU Swipe enabled (which was more of a nuisance - cool idea but it would come up unwanted). Disabled that and immediately fixed the problem!
I salute you sir as your fix actually worked..kind of makes me think twice about what I'm installing as I would never of found this on my own...kudos!
Had this problem with Skype on Samsung Tab S 10.5 tablet, Android 6.0.1. Turned off all Overlay apps in settings and then skype worked again. I'll have to reset all my other apps one by one to get things back to normal. Thanks
Hey folks ... I am using Honor 5x ... I was going crazy ... absolutely mad about this screen overlay madness ... I checked videos and also read long documents online nothing helped. I was about to reset my phone but then I realized that I had activated a floating dock on my screen ( Just like the small circle you have on the iPhone screen which opens up on touch and gives you short cut options of going back to home screen) I switched it off and bingo my problem was solved. I ended up deleting all my apps and games in my struggle to fix the problem, but it was a very small setting that had to be turned off. So bottom line, just sit back and think, observe your phone and find out which floating app is sitting on your screen permanently or which was the app that was installed right before the issue started and then either turn off that app or uninstall it and it issue should be fixed. No need of following any lengthy troubleshooting steps. It's simple folks (overlay) find the culprit software that's overlaying on ur phone screen and following you on every screen of your phone. I hope this help. If it does not, then write to me on feroziswanted@gmail.com... I am no developer but might be able to help!! Cheers, Ferokzz
Hey I appreciate it man, it worked and I was able to turn my touch assistant back on after turning all my app's permissions back on. I congratulate you on your chill, realistic aspect towards it too. But overall thanks, you're literally a life saver.
I was in the midst of losing my cool about this issue when it dawned on me that I had enabled touch wiz on my phone and that annoying little dude in a box always was popping up on the exact spot I needed to do something and he floats around so that was the only floating chat head that I could recall recently which could have possibly been the culprit since I had already factory reset and tried the tedious chore of disabling each app. So far I think its the reason I had the fliping screen overlay detection each and every single solitary function I was performing do will see so far so good and if it isn't the issue you will see me on the nightly news and the headline will rwas "LOCAL WOMAN ARRESTED FOR BLOWING UP BRSND NEW PHONE AFTER SHE WENT CRAZY FROM SCREEN OVERLAY MESSAGES THAT WOULDNT STOP POPPING UP ON HER BRAND NEW EXPENSIVE LG ANDROID PHONE" ....wish me luck
I already sacrificed Twilight and Swapps to fix this on my SGS7, but the problem persists on my AndroidWear watch.
Same problem on brand new Huawei P9. The "draw over other apps" list allowed to turn this off for a few apps but others show as "yes" and the slider is greyed out so I can not turn off. What to do?
This is ridiculous there is no Android fix to this yet.
Any Luck? Exactly The same problem for p9 and cannot find a solution.
Since, many people are lurking with their Samsung Galaxy series phones for a solution - I can share what worked for my Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016) phone. You make sure the phone is not locked in portrait mode. Then, launch the suspect app in landscape mode and it should be working.
THANKYOU! I tried uninstalling the app causing the issue and it still wouldn't work, I was afraid I was going to have to factory reset to get the damn thing working again.
Thanks. This is great, searching for hours, so simple the solution is! This must go to the main article!!!
You my friend, your a blessing thank you!!!!! I can now draw over apps again on new installed apps!!!! Again, thank you..
Work for me. Samsung A9 Pro.
On my Wifes S7 Edge phone, the Install Button Unlocker Worked for me too. Installed the app. Opened button app and turned on the switch. Then was able to turn on all the permissions I needed without that annoying screen overlay nag. Went back to the button app and turned it off just to be safe.
OK.....Now I find that rebooting into safe mode is of no use for apps that have been downloaded and installed as they get locked out in safe mode. So I installed the <install button unlocker> and Voila!!!!!! It WORKS
Remember, folks. This is not a manufacturer problem.
This is utterly inexcusable incompetence from Google.
Thank you for solution! The problematic app for me was "Micro CPU Monitor", old app, last updated on year 2012. My phone is Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, SM-G935F, Marshmallow 6.0.1
As noted this is rather inelegant. An easier way is to boot up in safe mode and set the permissions for the app that is asking for access rights, and then reboot in normal mode. To boot into safe mode press and hold power button. Press and hold the <power off>dialogue, which appears, for a couple of seconds seconds. The dialogue <Reboot to safe mode> appears. Say OK and to boot into safe mode. Your home screen will display "Safe Mode" at the bottom. Now go to <Settings>, <Apps>, <App requesting right of access>, enable / disable permissions. Power off and restart the phone.
I am using moto grplus 32gb i am also having the eroor of screen overlay detectd what ever the apps are told i really dont unse them so whats the eroor i request to pls help me thank you so much all of you pls help me waiting for the help reply......
The problem may be because of a third party app not mentioned above. Try to off the permission to draw over other apps for all third party apps, and then try to on it for each one, checking whether it is allowing to change permission without screen overlay dialog box. U will surely find it in this manner, the app causing trouble. Hoping this will help, I too am using moto g4plus
Thank you thank you!! I was getting the screen overlay message on my S6. Tried to fix it on my own to my frustration! Found your instructions and it worked perfectly! It was the fb messenger "floating heads!"
My whatspp nor viber calling is not working. I cant make calls nor i can receive it. Help needed!!
tried all of it nothing happened & I'm going crazy!
just uninstall clean mast, cc cleaner, privacy grd operates the folders and applications. I had the same which is now resolved after uninstalling above mentioned apps... try this
Still don't work for my experia Z5
Just install the Instal Button Unlocker app...i have a Note 4 and after a long search i found this bit of advice that WORKS! Simple. ..not all these numerous steps that don't work.
How safe is this?
This is an absolute life saver!! I installed this app and it worked instantly and flawlessly. Rick, you have truly solved my most nagging headache with MM so far. Thanks you very much for the share!!! I highly recommend this app for anyone having constant overlay issues and the disabling of apps is not working. Mine were all grayed out now I can use my phone how I intend!! I even purchased the no ads version as a thumb up to the app dev!!! 5 stars!! I
I have a Samsung A3 and yesterday evening I installed WhatsCall a free calling apps and since I have got this issue and none of the above advices work for me. When I go into settings there are no options as stated, if there is anyone who fixed this issue for Samsung A3 I shall be grateful if they could share their joy!
Try the Instal Button Unlocker app...a quick fix that works. ...
On the Galaxy A3, go to "settings", scroll all the way down to "Application manager" (third from the bottom).
Click on the three dots in the top right-hand corner, then select "Apps that can appear on top".
I haven't found the exact app which is causing me problems, so I switch all of them off, go back and set the permissions on the new app, then return to settings and switch back on overlays for the apps which i need.
Following an update, my phone is treating most of my apps as new ones so i have done this many times.!!
Hope this helps.!
Don't update marshmallow there is overlay probelm always and phone has stopped working for a moment
thanks..its work bro
On Galaxy S7 Edge, Solved the issue by removing betternet VPN. It should also work when disabling it as well.
galaxy s7 edge- solved uninstaling du battery saver. Then Applications > Application manager
Press on More > Apps that can appear on top, uncheck all, restart and enjoy..
All of the "solutions" I've seen on this problem are USELESS! I'm wondering when Samsung is going to fix this serious S-7 problem ....
I agree!!! This is fracking ANNOYING!!!
I have faced this problem with Samsung Galaxy note 4. For solving this problem go to setting-> Display and WallPaper->One-handed operation and "off" all options . Now enjoy... you can give all permission to your app. Best of Luck guys!!!!!!
allen powers - man. you rock. thanks for the suggestion
I am using a Samsung On 5, Doing the following steps did work only after a Restart.
Hi... Just got this problem and I found by digging online a easy solution. If you changed anything in DISPLAY setting, make sure you reverse it. Could not believe it that was a fix. Unchecked an option and then.. all "draw apps" were fixed.
Try yourself!
For overlay problem.... Look for Allen Powers comment in this article.... It worked when absolutely nothing else would....
Attention guys this is the fix for note 5 screen overlay problem turn off your phone and start it in safe mode by by pressing power until galaxy note 5 show on screen immediately release power and press volume down until phone is complete on you are now in safe mode go to settings manage applications and open the app that is asking for permissions you can now change the permission after that you can reestar the phone in normal mode.say thank you if i have helped you
Good job mate. Thanks a lot. It kinda helped.
Turns out Facebook messenger is also an issue for those trying to find the problem
That was the problem on my Huawei L9
Screen overlay - If you have DU battery saver installed, just disable the DU sweep (which comes from bottom corner of your screen for easy access of apps). It worked in my J7 prime.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! very grateful for this beautiful step by step guide..!! You rock.
Please share.
Just an FYI, but my "offending app" was Google+ (I didn't it in the list above of apps blamed for the trouble). I tried disabling all apps and then re-granting permissions 1 by 1 to no avail. After I uninstalled the Google+ app & rebooted my phone, then all was back to normal. Thanks for your help.
I'll try this, thanks very much.....
OK, tell me how to Uninstalled g+ I tried but my phone won't let me all it will do is Uninstalled the update. Thanks.
This is the correct answer
This is a damn nightmare! Everytime I install a new app or use a new feature in an old app, I have to give it permission, but can't unless I one by one disable all screen overlays WTF! I'm so frustrated! Every other day I have to go through this BS. Thinking myself smart I spent the better part of a day, one by one checking each app's permissions in settings app, and preemptively granting permissions. Than this morning I opened a news app and it needs location permission. I could've snapped this tablet in half!
GUYSSS I HAVE FOUND THE SOLUTION JUST GO TO THE ACCESSIBILITY AND GO TO THE BOTTOM AND CHANGE EVERY APP TO OFF IT WILL WORK 100 % ENJOYYYYYY
Thanks I'll try it. Thanks again
thanks Mr asish joshi same method really worked on my LGG4
GUYSSS I HAVE FOUND THE SOLUTION JUST GO TO THE ACCESSIBILITY AND GO TO THE BOTTOM AND CHANGE EVERY APP TO OFF IT WILL WORK 100 % ENJOYYYYYY
I've had the same issue trying to use the camera on the USAA app with my HTC One M9 and the workaround doesn't fix it. This didn't use to be a problem but I recently had to do a hard reset on my phone and reinstall all my apps and since then I can't get it to work
I get it, but the problem is why do i have to turn them on and off manually each time i install a new app? Isn't that freaking stupid?
I have disabled screen overlay on every app I have and I still keep getting an error message when I try to give permissions for contacts for whatsapp.
See Allen Powers comment. It worked.
I got a problem of app permission what to do?
For people using the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, try deactivating Edge Panels under Settings > Edge screen > Edge Panels.
What about samsung s6 phones???
Install Button Unlocker has worked great for me so far. It's still not a fix as I see it as a Google Android issue. Can't hurt to give the app a try.
Thanks I'll try that now. Thank you again.
Allen powers if I could see you in person right now I'd kiss you. Lol, it worked I installed button unlocker and everything works. Thank you thank you thank you. You are awsome........
You're welcome. I'm single by the way 😘
Thank you so much Allen Powers...i was beginning to loose my patience i installed the button unlocker and my phone is back to normal...again thank you so much!!
Allen Powers you ROCK..... Wifes LG G4 started with this overlay issue and was driving me absolutely insane. I found your comment and BOOM....it worked Immediately ....THANK YOU......BTW..... In case you missed the answer.... Download Button Unlocker.
I have already downloaded Install Button Unlocker, and what is the next step please.
This was the best suggestion. Many many thanks.
I originally read this post from Rick about Button Installer app and I thanked him kindly. As the original poster for this awesome share, I'd like to thank you and kiss you in the mouth as well in the most heterosexual way possible! This was truly an awesome share!! Thanks a million!! 5 stars!!
After 2 full days of i'm-going-to-throw-the-phone-out-the-window frustration, finally a solution!
I had tried all the million other solutions suggested and each worked for 1 app setting and then the screen overlay ghost returned. What made matters worse was that in my attempts to fix the overlay problem, I reset the app preferences. This very politely removed all previously granted app permissions - which I then couldn't reset because of the screen overlay problem.
Anyway, this works perfectly. The ads may get on my nerves soon but it's worth it until normal phone operations are resumed.
Thanks Allen!!
This is NOT a solution! A solution works for everyone and this for some people has been a time waster. If some things work for some people and not others it has to be baked into the OS and it conflicts with certain apps. If it worked, great, but if you download another app and it doesn't does that mean it's fixed? No!
Thanks for responding to me, iv tried all these things and I'm still getting the message screen overlay. What can I do now? I just bought the phone and can't afford to but another one. I love samsung and Android but this is frustrating me really bad... thanks again. I have a Samsung s6 edge
disabled cm security and uninstalled all the DU apps...it works! I am using Galaxy S7 Edge
What is DU?????
OMG...Renee! The DU suite of apps, I'd assume.
I guess I'm really stupid but I still don't know what DU means.
Security, battery saver, speeds up phone. Several different apps in the DU line...
U no if uv gottit coz the mrssages/prompts it givs u at the bottom of them thers a pic of a wee racoon thing it tells u if ur fones too hot to optimise or clean etc the apps blue and white hope it helps jxxx iv just factory reset and bingo as i was lookin fr all these apps that i neva had or even new wot they did at all i read a comment last nite fi a chap who said after weeks the reset had worked fr him it has also for me but u gotta start up all ur stuff again so mind passwords usernames etc good luck and mind this is from sumone thats totally tec retarded wishing u luck as i was gna murder sumine lol jxxx
What does DU mean???
Had the same on Sony z2, tried usual methods, no joy, uninsulated Du apps and all OK now :-)
I don't understand why you need to dissallow all apps overlay permission and turn them on again EVERY TIME you want to change a permission. I explicitely gave those apps permissions to use overlay. So the OS should allow changing those settings while the permitted overlay is active!! It's ridiculous.
If you have a chat head open or something that is open over other apps this message will appear like it did for me but instead of doing all of that all I did was remove the chat from the screen and it worked again
This is the worst thing yet on Android. Compounded with the new ask for permissions as needed by apps, means you don't know until you try to use an app's feature that you have to give it permission, then when you try to give this permission, you get a screen overlay error. OMG! Today I tried to save a picture in chrome, chrome needs storage permission....... So it's not newly downloaded apps, it's any app that has yet to ask for permission.
See Allen Powers comment. It worked.
It was one-handed operation!
I have a Galaxy S5 and have done we everything suggested in the article and still have the problem. Can't add or edit contacts, share a picture. To Facebook, etc. Getting very frustrating. Hating the new update because of it.
Same problem here. Turned off all apps on top and the one handed operation is turned off. Still the error is showing.
See Allen Powers comment... It worked
See Allen Powers comment. It worked
I also have a Galaxy S5 and this was driving me crazy. I found that turning off Blue Light Filter fixed the issue, for now.
On my Samsung 6 I have done everything that you mentioned above, turned everything off that I could find, and I'm STILL getting the error message. I'm unable to back up any of my videos or pics to my google drive because of this error, but I don't know what's causing it :( Any help or advice would be much appreciated please as I don't want to lose any of my memories.
Mobile Go app caused same problem
i had series of "DU" software on my phone to keep my apps optimized and clear memory, i finally stumbled across someone who showed me a site to take all those apps and uninstall them. my phone is back to normal now. (Samsung Galaxy 7edge)
I turned off all draw over app permissions on my note5 even the system apps and I still get the message when trying to enable location permissions on my Google cast app. Any suggestions. Not using the one hand keyboard either btw
Except that this isn't a fix its a long and annoying process that has to be performed every time you install an app and than undone to make your overlay work again.
The actual FIX would be for the android system to automate this process by temporarily disabling all overlays AUTOMATICALLY while the permission dialogue is being displayed and than re enable them after permissions are granted.
The real error here is that this error exists at all and requires user interaction for a process that should be handled by the Android Operating system behind the scenes
Absolutely totally agree with you, Mike. This is ridiculous. I have the added problem that my back / home / recent apps buttons don't work on my Xperia Z2, so I have to use a third party app that "draws over" in order to access these key functions. If I can't use the third-party app, I have to restart my phone every time I want to use a different app!!!! The error effectively renders my $600 phone unusable. I've been a cheerleader for Android for ages, but this is a serious issue.
Completely agree as well. This is EXTREMELY ridiculous. This is not at all a solution. It seems like a really bad design flaw. Because I have apps that use the overlay, I have to do this for every single app I install? Seriously? In what way does this make sense?
For days i have been frustrated by this screen overlay and getting rid of a app did the trick, great advise THANKYOU!!
I disabled the one-sided operation side panel and that fixed it. That doesn't even show up in the list of apps so how stupid is Google?
The side panel fix worked for me too. So far.
It seems that this is more of "incompatibility" of an app to 6.0.1 OS. If the developer hasn't updated its app version to be compatible with 6.0.1 then you'll get this "screen overlay" message. And yes, CleanMaster is one of those apps.
i've did everything but it does'nt help me out of that in my Moto g4+
Finally fixed it... after numerous hard resets, trial and error with apps and safe mode. Turns out it's just the side key panel on my note 4. Turn it off, all works well. Turn it on #screenoverlaydetected hell breaks loose!
Thank you so much. I've just turned off side panel on my Note 4. My phone is finally back to normal. I could not open my gallery, google photos or my pocket weather app. It was very frustrating. All good now.
I have problem using WhatsApp. I don't have WhatsApp in the "Apps that can appear on top" list.
Suggest me a solution.
It doesn't work for me. I've denied the permission for every app, even those from the system. What else should I do? I've already done a cache wipe and a hard reset, but nothing has changed.
Still won't work! Tried the step by step. Disabled and enabled the apps but still the same message. Will hard reset or reset to factory settings solve the problem?
I'm afraid it won't. I've just performed a hard reset but the problem persists. Before doing this I wiped out the phone cache, as suggested somewhere else, but nothing... :(
My basic solution has been that of uninstalling every app that could be uninstalled. I also used 'App Detective' to remove the hidden ones... :( Now, at least, it works.
Hello everyone. I have the same problem in my Sony Xperia z2 and I couldn't disable all apps overlay permission since in some of apps like phone pre-installed apps and system apps, I can't disable or enable this permission. The switch is gray and the "Screen overlay detected" error is almost there with all possible apps' overlay permission disabled. And in addition I should say that force stopping these apps haven't any effect on my problem disabling permission.
LG G5 (and previously G4) here and had problems with this, as well. So far every time I've had a problem resetting and then changing the settings has worked. I think force stopping whatever app would also work, but resetting is just easier.
For those of you who tried the above without luck, the system apps that have the permission are hidden on some (all?) phones. To access them, you have to click on "Show system" (or Show System apps or similar) from the menu in the "Draw over other apps" permission area. My guess would be the reason Samsung and Motorola are mostly seeing this is due to a system app that causes the problem, not a third party app.
Personally I have narrowed my problem down to a screen recorder, Facebook messenger, or a specialty photo app I have, all three which use pop up type things to work.
Hi, I'm a new user of LG G5, I've reset my phone twice, but still screen overlay detected. Can you help me? I cannot even play a recorded on the Video. I do not know what to start though. Really appreciate it if you help me. Thanks.
I had this problem with my daughter's phone. We both have a Samsung GS6 and the apps we use are pretty much the same. This problem just started when she tried to share a photo from Google+ to Instagram. All of the apps on her phone have been there for months. I could not find the offending app so after reading this I decided to uninstall CleanMaster. That fixed the problem. I am not sure why this surfaced on her phone today and has not caused a problem on my phone (yet). We have both had CleanMaster on our phones since January.
This worked for me. This is super annoying though. Literally ever new app I install that has permissions causes me to do this work around. What does't make sense is why would this just be happening to Samsung and Motorola devices only. Looks like this if it is a software issue would be causing this for all users,
I have read many comments and none that I read addressed or fixed the same problem on my Note 4 with Marsh. 6.01. Removing Facebook lead me to going to Developers and checking a box to show Layers (sorry for not giving the exact name, uninstalling Facebook with the option to re-install original Facebook app opened the box automatically). When I checked the box, the main screen popped up with transparent red areas showing screen overlays. Just a couple of days ago, after watching 50 great things about the net Note 7, I wanted to try a few of them on my Note 4. ******* I went to Settings, in the group Sound and Display, then One-handed operation, and turned on Reduce Screen Size and Side Key Panel. I turned them all OFF and my phone started working correctly again. Your problem may be different but when I turned on the option in Developers section for Overlays, it popped into the main screen menu and apps, and showed a little red patch for the screen overlay for the Side Key Panel which I had just turned back on a few days ago to try to make it useful again. Guess NOT. Unfortunately, I think I am going to have to go back to each app to turn on each permission individually, or turn all permissions on, or reinstall each app. :( Hope this helps you.
The error didn't go away until I force stopped Facebook.
Note 5 used for 19 months without a single issue. Now this SCREEN OVERLAY DETECTED is keeping me from using main apps such as Gallery.. I have tried everything in line with instructions and variations of them. Still, absolutely nothing and it has become maddening not being able to use my superb phone as I have done until now!!
Turned everything off - still having problems.. Note 7 user.. Particular issue with allowing contacts access and gmail access to contacts. Have uninstalled twilight and whenever the dialogue pops up I turn off all apps, allow what needs to be allowed then go and turn them on again.. Has worked until gmail asked for access to contacts and now contacts access to something else. Any other ideas?
Try "one-handed operation" in settings-display and wallpaper then turn off everything including "side key panel". In my case it was the culprit.
This happens to me every time I attempt to do something that isn't permitted in a specific app, but only does it while a Facebook chat head is active. Upon closing the chat head, I'm able to change the permissions freely for whatever app desires a change. This has happened very frequently as of late, but Facebook is what causes it on my Galaxy S6 Edge.
found out that my "peel smart remote" is the culprit. disable over on top and my problem solved.
Gosh this was driving me nuts! I am a Note 7 user and I even took my phone to tmobile and they could not figure it out so I got back home and researched this issue online and I am so glad I found this article. These steps fixed the problem completely! Thank you so much!
Problem solved after uninstaling battery doctor and dlean master
Tried all these and nothing worked for me on a Sprint Note 4 until i saw a post about turning off side key panel from top of phone. Reinstalled apps that didn't work and restarted and worked finally. This update is a piece of crap.
This works perfectly. This must be the special answer for Note 4 users. Thanks for posting
Hi!
I'm using a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 and has solved that problem in few days ago as well as solutions which the author presents. The apps require "draw over other apps" to create one widget on home screen or change screen setup when it runs in background like as the apps author mentioned above, and temporary disable the draw function of its, OK!
I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S5 and I have disabled everything. I've restarted my phone, still doesn't work. I have no clue what's causing it.
Guys im using note 4. Done all the steps mentioned here.....all of them....problem is still there. Should I go for factory reset?
turn off side key panel from top of phone then restart phone
The Galaxy Note 7 has a "Draw over other apps" option. I went in and unchecked everything and the problem went away. Thanks for the tips.
None of this specifically helped me on my Verizon LG G4. There is no option for turning the screen overlay off (for everything). I did not try turning every app off. However, the app that was doing this to me was TrustGo. I turned off all real-time scanning and it did not fix it. I turned off the screen overlay for it and it did not fix it. I uninstalled the app and it DID fix it! I was able to modify all my permissions which in my case was wanting to turn some off. I reinstalled the app and have had no issues. To test an easier solution, I simply FORCE STOPed the TrustGo app, then I was able to adjust permissions again. FYI There is no batterysaver stock on it, however, they want you to use one of theirs so it does show something like "+2h 21m could be extended >" so maybe that has something to do with it. Either way, problem solved! :D
Brilliant.
Thank you!!!
I have been searching for an answer to this problem for 2 days now and none seemed to work.
I am using Samsung Galaxy S5 and none of the suggested answers worked.
I found Clean Sweep and FORCE STOPPed it and voila I got rid of the pesky "screen overlay" message.
Many many thanks
I had received the screen overlay,,,,,, And found that the Facebook is the cause . I could not uninstall it so I just disabled it. My mobile is Note 4 Android 6.0.1. Now its back to normal
Started receiving the "screen overlay detected" on my Galaxy S5 and tried all the solutions mentioned on the web with no success. Contacted my provider MetroPCS who "refreshed" the phone but this didn't help. Today I went to the MetroPCS store and the tech stated he's seen a lot of these problems lately. He disabled all the generic anti virus and cleaners and now the phone works without incident and no more error message. Tech advised that these generic cleaners and anti virus are actually planting viruses. Uninstall all the generic "fun to have" apps and just use the Smart Manager Samsung app to clean your phone.
Thanks. Your advice worked.
I have a Galaxy Note 5 and I am still having this issue after disabling and then enabling the app permissions.
My issue has been corrected. It was the one handed operation feature which was suggested at the bottom of the article.
Good stuff!
Running Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, and for me it's the Facebook Messenger chat head that is causing the problems. It even inteferes with copy and paste operations on other apps. So for now I'm disabling the chat heads.
I am Samsung S6..the problem still occur..uninstalled the cause apps (i think), restart the phone but the message still appear..so frustrating
Galaxy Note 4 here. It turned out to be my Omni Swipe which is odd because I've been using omni swipe over a year with no problems.
I had the same problem using Samsung Galaxy S5...so I disabled all the applications, then I removed the apps that have been blamed for the problem (which are named in the article) and also uninstalled any locker app...eventually the screen overlay problem has been solved!! Thank you all for your advice!
I am unable to fix the problem , done all
I have disabled all the applications but also the problem is still exist
hi
i had this problem.
i solved it.
it is because of 2 types of program.
just uninstall any locker such as cm locker or screen locker.
and also uninstall any floating bar such az home button.
after uninstall plz restart your smart phone.
and then you can go to application manager and after select any programm add all permission you need.
goodluck.
It really works just tried on my Samsung j7..thanks bro...good luck
For Samsung, all you need to do is choose disable all. The setting will re-enable itself with no further action on the part of the user.
Even easier, if it's Twilight causing the problem, swipe your notifications and pause the app. End of problem.
Galaxy S5 running 6.0.1 followed all the steps and still have the proboem. Using gallery app as an example. Open the app and it requires permission for contacts, calender, and location. Cancel closes the app while $click settings" opens the "apps that can appear on top." All are switched to off and problem still continues. Help would be appreciated
i too am using S5 the issue with mine was my DU BATTERY SAVER after uninstalling it my phone stop giving me screen overlay
A known bad one for this is Twilight, its raison d'être being to overlay red on your screen as a night vision/sleep aid. Struggled a bit with that one on my Nexus 5 on Android 6.0.1.
LG G5 has same problem. I looked on the web and finally had the Techie at Verizon talk me thru it. and what he said to fix it, works!
Got this problem 3 or 4 times a couple of days ago, under Marshmallow, after I tested DU Battery saver, clean master combination or alone, and also I applied sdmaid fixes.
I had no problem at all with those two app before.
I guess it has something to do with notification, pemissions. Don't now what exactly.
A few apps have automatic hibebernation after 3 days inactive in smart manager. May be something goes wrong, and ghost background process was awakened?
As yet my excellent Samsung Galaxy S5 has not suffered from this problem. I use drupe, floating Toucher which both provide floating bubbles.
Though will now know what to do should it occur.
Peace ✌
