Daydream could not have been named any better. It's the future of virtual reality on a platform that Google will fully control and create by using different software and hardware. Of course, they want it to be mobile, like Cardboard, but here is exactly what this all means.
What is Daydream and Daydream view?
Daydream is a high quality, mobile virtual reality platform that comes with everything necessary to create a unique immersion experience. The platform will be supported by future Android smartphones.
Daydream is compatible with smartphones that run Android Nougat, which will be placed inside a headset and, in order to improve the experience, will come with a small hand held control. The VR headset and controller together are called Daydream View (an updated version of Google Cardboard) and it can be bought directly from the Google Store starting at 69€.
The future of virtual reality
Naturally, a complete ecosystem of apps will be built around it similar to the one that already exists for Google Cardboard in Google Play. Developers have three SDKs available to create apps as well as games using the graphic engines of Unreal and Unity.
Frankly speaking, Daydream is a virtual reality ecosystem, a system of apps and the standard for virtual reality headsets and controllers like the ones for Daydream View. This means that virtual reality apps can be more easily developed and with a higher quality thanks to the platform's ease of use. Another thing to keep in mind is the standard of glasses and controller which will have perfect immersion and compatibility with all of the apps.
Which devices will support Daydream?
In fall 2016, the first version of Daydream was released by developers who already knew some of the things smartphones would need in order to support the platform. There are three key points to make a smartphone compatible with Daydream:
- High sensitivity sensors in order to have complete control of the position of the smartphone and to follow the head and eye movements of the user.
A screen with a resolution and refresh high enough to guarantee a good experience.
- A good processor. The processor is the most important part because everything depends on the speed of the spatial calculations being made while the user is moving their head.
Google Pixel is the first official device that supports Daydream and will include the three key points above. Of course, the other side of the coin is the software that these incredible smartphones run. Android Nougat is in charge of creating this whole virtual reality ecosystem, ensuring performance and an interface dedicated specifically to virtual reality. You can even receive notifications while inside the metaverse.
Developers can use the Nexus 6P as the main device to run the platform and to place inside the headset plus a second smartphone with gyroscope and a minimum of Android KitKat to emulate the controller. On Daydream's website it says that the Nexus 6P can heat up a lot during sessions but that the end devices at which they are aimed won't get as hot.
The majority of manufacturers (Samsung, HTC, LG, Xiaomi, Huawei, ZTE, ASUS and Alcatel) will all have compatible devices coming this fall. It's also possible that the current high range smartphones that use Android Nougat could be capable of using the platform.
