P20 in front, Honor 9 at the back (with a bit more color)

Honor 10 can be defined in two ways because of its design. At first, you might describe it as 'yet another iPhone X clone'. Yes, the similarities are there and are undeniable because of the controversial notch, which we just have to get used to.

The second way it can be framed is like a hybrid between Honor 9 and Huawei P20 Pro, but with some welcome novelties. The rear glass has been enhanced so that it offers the same magnificent reflections as Honor's previous flagship, but features a colored variant with shades of blue and purple that are reminiscent of the beautiful P20 Pro Twilight.

On the front side we find a 5.84" LTPS LCD display (equipped with notch just like the Huawei P20) in 18.5:9 format and a resolution of 2280x1080 pixels. Unlike the P20, we have one welcome new feature: Honor 10 hides the fingerprint reader at the bottom of the glass, allowing the brand to avoid the hollow that usually houses the sensor. The reader is not integrated into the display and the black frame at the bottom hasn't been removed.

Honor 10 measures 7.7 mm thick for only 153 grams of weight. The smartphone is not certified for resistance to water or dust.

Honor plays it safe with the Kirin 970 and AI

No major changes in technical specifications. The Honor 10 has the proven Kirin 970 with an NPU dedicated to artificial intelligence. Alongside the SoC in China we find 6GB of RAM and 64 or 128GB of internal memory (not expandable). In western markets, a version with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal memory is more likely to arrive.

The smartphone has a dedicated DAC called AK4376A, capable of processing audio in 7.1 channels. The 3.5mm headphone jack will be a welcome surprise for many. The battery opts for 3400 mAh and offers support for Huawei SuperCharge via the USB Type-C 2.0 port.

The soul of the smartphone is Android 8.1 Oreo with EMUI 8.1 customization as expected from the company.

Cameras lose Leica brand but not intelligence

The Honor 10 has two rear cameras (not three like the P20 Pro) that do not have the Leica brand for lens design, which remains exclusive to Huawei. The 16 and 24 megapixel cameras are supported by artificial intelligence and can recognize 500 different scenarios and 22 different object types. Optical stabilization is not present, but the same intelligent stabilization is used as with the Huawei AI.

The front camera is 24MP, that should ensure excellent selfie as well as faster face recognition.

We look forward to try the new smartphone from the Chinese brand that, launched at the price of 2599 / 2999 yuan (about 415 and 480 dollars) in China, could become the best smartphone for price-quality ratio of 2018, even cheaper than the OnePlus 6.

What do you think about the Honor 10?

  • Another impressive looking device from HONOR / HUAWEI 👍
I will reserve judgement for final reveal

We're so used to Bigger Batteries, but I'm thinking the latest Android OS (8.1 Oreo) - or EMUI - must come with some impressive control of stopping the battery from being drained by Apps (thus a smaller size can last as long as a larger size did 2 years ago)

  • I'm too use to the 4,000mAH battery that I've had on the Mate2, 8,9 to go back to anything smaller. ;)

  • I like the Huawei family of phones, and don't care if anybody else doesn't. They come with great features, and are malleable, and tough, at the same time. Their batteries last longer than most, for the same sized battery. Until there's documented proof( u know, facts) that they're doing, or have done any spying, espionage, or phoning home( one plus and others), I'll continue to get them.
