When Motorola dropped the Moto G – that glorious, low-cost, high quality Android device for just $179 – we were ecstatic. Not only was a major manufacturer bringing an affordable Android device to the market, but it was shipping with vanilla Android decorated with just a few Motorola apps on top. Now, Xiaomi, the new home of ex-Googler Hugo Barra, has announced an even cheaper handset with even better specs than the Moto G: the Hongmi 1S.
The dual-SIM 1S will feature a quad-core Snapdragon 400 chipset clocked at 1.6 GHz, with 1 GB of RAM in support and Adreno 305 graphics. That's much the same as the latest version of Android: 4.4.2 KitKat, even though the 1S has a better camera and microSD expansion. The 1S will ship with the MIUI V5 ROM based on Android 4.3.

At launch, the Hongmi 1S will be released in Chinese on CDMA (although it has both a CDMA and GSM SIM card slot) for 799 Yuan – that's the equivalent of 130 USD. The device will be available for preorder on February 20. There's no announcements about a global or US release as yet, but the success of the Moto G globally has proven there is a very solid market for high-powered affordable devices. With Hugo Barra sitting behind the VP's desk of Xiaomi, there's every reason to believe he'll be applying a bit of the ex-Google-owned Motorola ethos to the Xiaomi product lineup. And global availability is certainly part of that recipe.
Would you consider a 1S if it was available in your country? What are your thoughts on the MIUI ROM?
