In a jerk move that smacks of Apple, Galaxy Note 3 so that some functions will not work if you are not using authentic overpriced Samsung accessories. The details are scarce at the moment, but Korean news service ET News have ''inside sources'' and Samsung has not not yet commented on the story's legitimacy.

If you have a Note 3 with a S-View cover made by anyone other than Samsung, you may find yourself unable to use Note 3 features you would normally be able to with the accessory, like starting or ending calls. Wireless charging is another feature that is apparently affected by the chip, meaning you will only be able to use induction charging on a Samsung Qi stand. The chip is recognized by the phone as authentic and full functionality is enabled. Any other accessories will limit functionality or not work at all.

How far will the ''original accessory scam'' go? / © NextPit

Samsung sent the recognition chip out to its accessory manufacturers and made it compulsory to include it in any Note 3 accessories. Of course Samsung's line would be that it's for safety reasons and will maintain the integrity of your device by only letting it be used with original accessories. We all remember accessory blackmail for which Apple is renowned. Other cost-cutting, profit-boosting ideas include ditching the second battery and headphones from new smartphones.

How do you feel about this move by Samsung? Do you only use original accessories?

this is the main reason I haven't bought any apple products if they restrict the use of non samsung products I won't purchase another Samsung phone or product that is restricted

I think major third-party manufacturers would have to get let into the chip-deal, but it's an insult no matter how you look at it. For the case, ok sure, ''perhaps'' it's understandable because the S-View case is all about a Samsung-specific feature, but to say no other induction chargers will work is totally unfair, on consumers as well as third-party manufacturers. I like @Golstermeteor's comment too, if the EU will attack Apple for the lightning charger they definitely should have something to say about this too.

well I have read that the Samsung inductiv cover also works with QI stations from Nokia and whatnot...

@ Philipp, but in the case of charging dock and other accessories of that sort, Samsung will almost completely wash out the competition in the accessories market. I have to believe that Samsung won't be too hasty and corporate with some of the better companies (intec, belkin, ect) in some way to have this chip included in such accessories (not clones) that would reqiure them. Of course, such an agreement would involve giving Samsung a margin of the profits................

@SheemOn than main question, did apple get sued for doing that? probably not.
anyway, in case ONLY direct Samsung accessories get the chip it's unfair, BUT in case other manufacturers which prove to Samsung that their accessory also works perfectly (and probably share a bit of their income from the accessories) also get the chip it's OK. but several generic accessories definitely dont such a chip, like a case and whatnot, but the cant really cause danger to our devices...

I may be wrong, but in the USA, such practice is illegal.

OEM gear is always better anyway. Nothing fits tighter or looks cleaner. You know how many garbage clone Nexus 4 bumpers are online from China? And as mentioned in another comment, OEM accessories drop on Amazon super fast. Like said bumper which used to be $30, for $10--same price as the clones.

let them carry on and they will simply loose market share. There are so many phones & tablets out there for us to choose from.

Well this is just plain stupid, and cutting their nose off to spite their face!!
Samsung have great ideas, but don't go far enough!
3rd party developers then pick up the ball and run with it! ;-)
I love the s view case idea, but the official one offers NO PROTECTION to the body of the phone!
so I bought a 3rd party hard case with an s view front flap that also doubles as a stand for viewing videos!! - it's GREAT!!

Well, I usually use Samsung accessories (at my Note 2 times) but on Amazon the price drops faster than on retail markets. 15€ for an extra battery and about 20€ for another one with external charger. flipcover 20€ about USB Cable I also use a hama cable because the plug itself is a bit longer meaning you can use it with a case, which I did (and no that was not from Samsung.

the thing with the auth chip is truly annoying, but I think Samsung will give licensed manufacturers also that chip so we can get good accessory (I heard apple does it also that way in the German APit Comments)

Id actually be very surprised if this wasnt anti-competitive behaviour. Hopefully the European Commission will get stuck in to them

  • Amy R. Oct 24, 2013 Link to comment

That stupid! Besides the stock charger and s pen my note came with, I don't use any Samsung accessories. Why on earth would I buy a Samsung product that won't work properly (or at all) if I don't use Samsung accessories with it. BAD SAMSUNG!!!!

Yeah, me too. I already decided not to upgrade to the Note 3 of which I expected more. Then that bullsh*t with region lock and now this. Well, I have no time for idiocy. We'll see how this pans out, as I also have another year till the next upgrade. But, if this says, as it will I guess, I'm not buying Samsung anymore as I'm not buying anything Apple.

  • Glostermeteor Oct 24, 2013 Link to comment

I will be dumping Samsung if this is the case, along with their idiotic sim region locks. Im not due an upgrade for another year or so, so I have time to see how this plays out but if the restrictions stay in place I will not be buying another samsung.
