Huawei Mate 9 Android update: Oreo rollout begins in US

Android Oreo is rolling out for the Huawei Mate 9 in the US. The update comes bundled with Huawei’s EMUI 8.0 software skin and the January 2018 security patch. Here's what you can expect.

Android Oreo rolls out to Huawei Mate 9 in the US

Rejoice, US Mate 9 owners, it's cookie time. The Android 8.0 Oreo update is rolling out to Mate 9 models MHA-L29 and MHA-L09. Both models are international variants, available to purchase unlocked in the U.S. by shoppers via various retailers.

As for the Oreo update itself, it introduces persistent notifications, adaptive icons, and picture-in-picture mode among many other features. The update also brings the January 2018 Android security patch and EMUI 8.0, the latest version of Huawei’s skin.

EMUI 8.0 is meant to take advantage of artificial intelligence to shunt lesser-used apps to the background and optimize performance. Additionally, the update brings a new floating navigation dock and a 3D panorama mode to the rear camera.

Then there's the fact that this update is supposed to bring Project Treble to the Mate 9. This should make Huawei's pledge to continue to update its higher-end phones on a monthly schedule somewhat more realistic. At the moment, the roll out appears to be slow, but you shouldn't have to wait too long.

Have you recieved latest updates to your Huawei Mate 9? Did you notice any improvements?

I was on the so called "beta" IMEI numbers, got it in October/November, then got another (360) update Monday morning. On the beta board, some are still having some strange issues. It's starting to sound like 8.0 really isn't ready for prime time. Even the Essential phone is skipping 8, going to 8.1

I just updated my Mate 9 to Android 8 few days ago, but the next day I downgraded back to Nougat. Since after the update, my sim card 1's cellular data was not working, while the card 2's worked well. I tried put the card 1 to another phone, yeah it worked fine, but just not OK in the updated Mate 9. So I gave up Oreo, at least for a while.
