The Phone (2a) which we reviewed is Nothing’s cheaper option to the Phone (2), packing a muted processor and lacking some novelties found in the premium transparent counterpart. If you want a beefier option, the only option is to buy the Phone (2), which will set you back by a couple of Benjamins more.
Now, Nothing dropped a teaser on X, revealing it has another smartphone in the pipeline for a July 31 launch. The teaser also included subtle hints of a ‘Plus’ moniker under its (a) budget series. However, we have yet to see whether the company will settle for this new name once the device launches.
How’s the Nothing Phone (2a) Plus could be better
In terms of features and specifications, the upcoming smartphone will be distinguished with a “more powerful processor” as stated by Nothing’s co-founder Akis Evangelidis. The executive also mentioned the alleged Phone (2a) ‘Plus’ will boast revamped internal changes while retaining the signature design traits of Nothing’s devices on the outside.
As a reference, the Phone 2a is currently powered by a mid-range Mediatek Dimensity 7200 Pro chipset, which is a downgrade from the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 in the Phone (2). From what we know, the Plus entry will be fitted with a chipset better than the one in the Phone (2a).
On a separate note, the company shared an image that somewhat showed the running grooves in a curved pattern. To that end, this might indicate the handset will include wireless charging, which was missing from the standard Phone (2a).
Of course, beefier specifications would mean Nothing’s upgraded Phone (2a) Plus would command a higher price tag than the Phone (2a). At the moment, the latter retails for $349 a pop. It is a safe assumption for the Plus handset to break the $400 barrier and perhaps coming close to half a grand, depending on the specifications.
It is also unclear if we will see Nothing formally launch the Phone (2a) Plus in the US as the Phone (2a) is available only through the Nothing Developer program.
Why Nothing is launching another budget-oriented phone?
In another angle, the launch of another budget smartphone is rather interesting as the startup pledged before to keep its product strategy refined and less complicated. So from what it stands, the arrival of the Phone (2a) Plus is rather populating its product portfolio. Perhaps, this move could be a result from Phone (2a) not selling enough as Nothing as intended? Who really knows.
