The best free Android apps you can get right now

With so many apps available on the Google Play Store, it can be hard to find the one you want. That's why we've put together a list of the best free apps in several useful categories. Some of them offer in-app purchases, but they only make it onto this list if the free version is worth using in its own right, and we've just added six new apps for you to try out.

The best and most useful free apps
In this list you'll find apps that are free permanently once you install them. Sometimes certain functions are locked until you make a payment, but with the ones below we've ensured that the free functions and features are the best, and can be used to a good extent.
Don't forget to leave a comment telling us your thoughts and recommendations, and for further research, we recommend the tips and the end of the article.
Best free browser app: Firefox
Your favorite browser is a bit of a personal thing and depending on what you want out of that, you may well have a different favorite. That said, if you don't already have a favorite and want to try something other than Chrome, Firefox is worth checking out - particularly if you use it on the desktop too, as it'll sync your tabs and history.
It's highly customizable and puts the same emphasis on privacy and open source as its desktop counterpart, so it's hard not to recommend it. It's also entirely free.

Best free Android Launcher: Nova Launcher
One of the classics among the launchers is also available for free: Nova Launcher. For some functions, you have to buy the prime-unlocker for a fee, but the basic functions can also be used like this. Above all, the high performance has a positive effect on many a manufacturer's UI attachment.
Best free messenger: Signal
If you are looking for a free but recommendable messenger, you have found it with Signal. Signal supports classic text chats as well as voice and video calls. Its encryption is considered extremely secure and so the signal protocol is also used by competitors such as WhatsApp or Allo (only for incognito chats). What's the difference between Signal and other apps? There is no need to worry about data protection. Even Edward Snowden swears by this app.

Best free grocery shopping app: Bring!
Bring! Is basically a digital shopping list with an appealing design and assistance with searching for individual products. Recipes will help you with research and add the ingredients you need to the list all in one go. The brochures including special offers at your supermarkets will help you to save money, and you can set up several different lists and invite your friends or family to your individual shopping list.
Best free music player: Phonograph
For a long time, the go-to music player on Android has been Winamp, for its huge range of features and different options. That, however, makes it a little overly complicated to use for a casual listener, and it looks a bit retro too.
Phonograph is the opposite in terms of design, and brings a simple flat Material Design approach to your music. There aren't endless pages of options to scroll your way through but there's enough for most users and, more importantly, it's really simple to use.
If simple isn't what you want, then Winamp is the one to check out.

Best free file manager: Amaze
Open source fans should be happy with Amaze File Manager: The file manager is free and provides full access to local files on your phone or tablet. Of course, you can manage your memory card with Amaze. There is an additional App Manager, with which you can manage, save or uninstall your applications.

Best free antivirus app: Sophos Free Antivirus and Security
When it comes to security for your precious device, you can get top-notch protection without spending a penny. Sophos has a great record from independent watchdogs such as AV-Test. There aren't even any ads to annoy you, because Sophos makes money from B2B sales instead. Malware protection is based on an online database that also checks the reputation of individual apps and recommends alternatives.
- How to monitor system performance on your device
- Antivirus and mobile security to keep your Android safe

Sophos has a varied feature set, incorporating child protection filters, call blockers and device encryption and more. It also includes anti-theft features that allow you to remotely control your smartphone via SMS from other phone numbers you've previously specified.
Best free calendar app: DigiCal Calendar Agenda
For many people, Google Calendar probably offers enough functionality and convenience that you'll never need to look around for an alternative. If, however, you fancy a change of scenery and a few additional features, and all still for free, then DigiCal is well worth checking out.

The free version of DigiCal has a decent range of features, widgets, and calendar views to organize your schedule in a way that makes sense to you. You can view by day, week, or month and set widgets to make information available without the need to start the app. In-app purchases exist for extras like weather forecasts, or the DigiCal+ that adds extra view modes such as year view, even more widgets and themes, and also removes ads.
Best free navigation app: Waze
Waze is the best free navigation app because in addition to searching for the best route based on distance, it also takes into account the current traffic congestion along your route. It does this by crowdsourcing real-time congestion information from its users, allowing you to save time by avoiding construction and traffic accident delays in the busiest parts of the city.
It also has the option to change the voice to several funny alternatives, and it can warn you when you're speeding. Another great feature is that it can sync with your calendar so you don't have to type in addresses.

Best free photo editing app: Snapseed
It's a tough call between two experienced apps for best free photo editor, but Snapseed (now owned by Google) just beats VSCO Cam.
As well as long-standing Android app pedigree, 25 different filters, support for JPG and RAW DNG files, image tuning controls and a bunch of other tools (like Bokeh blurs, glow effects, etc.) that are really easy to use, it's also entirely free, which is where it beat VSCO, as that app charges for some filters.

Best free video editing app: Kinemaster
Video editing is a tricky category if you're looking for a fully-featured app with a whole bunch of different options, but still don't want to spend any money. Kinemaster is a good compromise for this, if not the one with the most features.
For free, you get a super-easy video editor that supports images, clips, music tracks, screenshots and other types of content. Quickly throwing together a video is a quick task, along with editing it and setting it to one of the pre-installed themes. The downside, however, is that you'll have a small watermark unless you choose to pay for a subscription to the service.
For anyone willing to pay a little money to get a lot more manual control over the resulting videos, PowerDirector is worth checking out, or if you want an even simpler video maker, there's Quik, which is free to use for short videos.

Best free camera app: Open Camera
If you want a massive amount of options for capturing your pictures, and a whole lot of manual control over the settings, AND you want all that without ever paying any money, then Open Camera is well worth a look.
Is it the best designed UI? Nope. Is it the easiest to use? Not even close (it's not hard either, though). But what it does is offer most of the common tools you could want when taking snaps on your phone, including things like time and location stamps, a burst mode, and a really handy widget for the home screen that opens the app and captures a picture with a single press.
There are other camera apps with more features available, but you'll have to pay for many of them, whereas Open Camera is totally free. There's a donation version of the app if you want to show your appreciation to the developer though.

Best free e-reader: ReadEra
ReadEra is a fast and versatile document reader that's great for ebook fans. It can open and read EPUB, PDF, DOC, DOCX, RTF, TXT, DJVU, FB2, MOBI and CHM file formats. The app automatically recognizes these types of files on your device and saves your place so it's easy to pick up where you left off the next time you open the app.

Overall we found the presentation to be easy on the eyes, and best of all, there aren't even any ads to get in the way of your reading!
Best free game: Pixel Dungeon
Ok, there are a lot of good free games for Android that we really love, but if you only have space or time for just one, then Pixel Dungeon stands out for bringing potentially hours of fun for free. Totally free, without even any ads, although there is an option to donate to the developer to show your appreciation.

The gameplay itself is rather straightforward fantasy-themed dungeon exploring in the 'Roguelike' genre, where the death of your character is permanent and randomly generated paths and enemies abound. Despite the difficulty, there are enough options and surprises to keep you trying again and again.
Get paid apps gone free with Apphoarder
Sometimes a developer will offer their premium (paid) app for free on the Play Store for a brief time. Great, but the Play Store is such a crowded marketplace that you're not likely to notice. That's where AppHoarder comes in. Essentially, this apps keeps a list of paid apps that are temporarily free on Google Play.

The app doesn't control for quality, and while you're not likely to find something you want every day, occasionally a real steal will turn up and you'll be glad AppHoarder brought it to your attention.
Get it on the Play Store
Finding the best free apps
Free should be free
Free apps can definitely be good. Developers can genuinely make a good source of income through affiliate links or banner ads, and other apps may come from developers who don't rely on any profit from the app. These are both positive examples.
However, what we don't want to see in a free app is content that encourages the deliberate or accidental opening of an advertisement, things that may monitor your market or user behavior or apps that may otherwise disrupt the smooth running of your device.
Tips from Google
It may not seem like it, but the Play Store is actually monitored and maintained. Individual apps can be categorized into Android Excellence apps. The list is constantly updated and includes mostly mainstream apps, but there will be the occasional one you've never heard of.

nice article
snapseed is a very good application for me.
Very good list. I'd advice x-plore as the best file manager (for functionality, not looks...)
I found the article very helpful. Thank you Nicholas Sir.
Some free lifestyle category apps which I recommend are "Journey", "Alarmy" and "Daylio".
I use waze for some of my commute needs and I also sometimes use Nova launcher. I have also used Microsoft to do which is also free for my to-do list and Google keep for notes and other info I want to be able to find again.
I use sendleap to access my texts on a tablet or pc. it is completely free. has a web interface and desktop apps, even on Linux.
I Like Signal, I only heard very good opinions.
And for navigation, Waze is perfect!
Hey
I have tried Amaze and believe me it does what it says ... )))
My top pics for this list are Malwarebytes, VSCO, Adobe Lens, Snapseed.
What about Levipic?
That's cool!
My main applications: Firefox, Microsoft Laucher, Waze, Open Camera, Office Lens, and a few of the less important.
Free does mean free, not that you can pay extra to unlock more features, like with Nova Launcher, yes I know you say there is the option to pay for the extras, BUT it is not a free proggy.
For best free launcher you really should make it Microsoft Launcher. It's way more feature packed than Nova's free launcher.
I have been using Waze for a long time and I am very pleased that I am aware of road events or other unforeseen incidents. As for Signal, I installed it but I can not understand how it works, because it's basically an SMS application and not messaging.
I'll look for other applications.
yeah ita great browsers
Great post! I am actually getting ready to across this information, is very helpful my friend. Also great blog here with all of the valuable information you have Keep up the good work you are doing here.Well, got a good knowledge.
Wow, how do you get to have Microsoft and S.H.I.T. in the same article?
SolCalendar no
More on playstore any reason for that?
I got a lot of information about apps, Your article is extremely helpful and has great information. I value your endeavors and all the best. It's exceptionally helpful data. I will sit tight for your next post. Keep It up.
Hi, All The Apps Is Good. But Security Apps One of Most Important For Everyone. So, Everyone Should to Used Good Security Apps on Their Android Device. Thanks For Review here.
here maps and google maps are different recommendations?
Citymapper is worth checking out as well.
Thanks for sharing the list. The apps you mentioned are all great but I am a little surprised you didn't mention about SHAREit app. It's the best app on android for sharing all kind of files from images, songs, videos to pdf, word documents and even games.
Mine are Flipp (all your grocery flyers in one place), Beep'N Go (keeps all my reward cards, so no need to carry them), Buffer (schedule tweets/posts on the go), TripLog (record your mileage).
dang ilov that king of phones lol
Is there really a virus?
yes
There are loads i use,but like those with the exit features,so you once you have finished with the application its closed down and not still running and draining the battery,Atom Launcher is the Best Launcher i use,PlayerPro the Best Music player i just as its so easy to use and update the Album photos to a certain Album,ClockQ is a Super Clock to use and you can show the date,am and battery and then set up quick set up by touching the clock to turn the application you want to use off or On,i use Quick Wi-Fi with this Clock,Tubemate is another one i use to download videos from You Tube plus the mp3 converter to change any video to a song,360 Battery is very good for getting more out of your battery, instead of using the Play Store all the time i use Uptodown to try some of the the new applications available on Android plus it does offer updates as well
Good list that mostly overlaps what I use where I'm interested. For Canadian weather, I always like to mention Fish and Whistle's app for Environment Canada, which is really the only reliable service in this country. After mucking with others, settled on SimpleNote as a fast sync note app. Finally, looking for a single app that combines secure encryptiion for app users but plain unencrypted SMS/MMS for non-users, it's Silence (Silence Communication) - FOSS, now implementing Signal encryption. Amaze file manager looks good, but I like the dual-pane format of X-plore (Lonely Cat) that does the same.
170826 Update: I see Waze added for navigation - maybe best for data-connected devices in the city. But neither Waze nor Google Maps are fully functional offline. I personally use OSMand, and have read good about Here WeGo. OSM maps are more detailed and don't expire (compared with Google offline maps.)
180402 Update: Deleted earlier recommendation of Open Camera (that I see has been adopted.) While OC does a lot, it doesn't provide basic JPEG output controls for Saturation, Contrast, and Sharpness, and doesn't offer a toggle for JPEG Denoise, which on my device smears even low ISO shots. OC's DRO output is psychedelic on my phone. I've reverted to Camera FV-5 (paid) - set to lossless PNG output - as the best point/shoot app for my device, but have Bacon Camera (for good DNG output from a Camera1 API phone), and Snap Camera HDR (for multishot HDR) on board. Camera apps are inconsistent across devices, it's trial and error if you don't like the preinstalled OEM app.
Here Duolingo and Dropbox are my favorites .. but I have one more app I really love it , it's Call recorder - SCR . it records both side of my phone calls with clearly sound.
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.skt.apps.smartcallrecorder
KeePassX is better than Dashlane. All you have to do is link the database to a Dropbox file so you can keep it update in all your devices. Besides that, you can use a password and a "passfile" to encrypt the database making it almost hack proof. I'm really satisfied with KeePassX services.
There are several releases so you can use it in your windows computer, Linux computer, Android Devices etc..
I'm using Dashlane (and Keepass). Keepass is great and open-source. Dashlane is also very good and obviously has a master password to protect the credentials. The pin is only for "quick unlock". It is also available for all platforms.
Compared to keepass, I would recommend Dashlane for normal users (better user experience, easier, has support, strong security) and Keepass for advanced users (setting up a dropbox shared file is not something my mother can do ;)
No Prisma here, it's out of date article, lol
Share products online with awesome people nearby and earn money easily through mutterfly.in, online rental portable now available in Google play store
This is very good file management system .Thanks to these apps.
Try out WikiGuide Free by CSS. It is a Virtual Tour Guide for your Android Device. It searches and reads Wikipedia articles to you as you change location. Great for learning about neighborhood info, local history and historic sites.
You missed telegram,
It can do work of pushbullets
The Channels and bots are best part of it
Good information! I would love to add one more app in the mix (recommended by my friend who studies in Boston) named GETMII. I've been using this app for a while now and I find it very useful. GETMII is an easy location based app where I can post my needs. Being a student finding lecture notes, hiring bike, looking for a roommate, etc. has never been this easy. Highly recommended. :)
Awesome Apps and nice information"Skype "is my favorite one.

There’s this awesome app called GrabPoints. In a nutshell they pay you for trying out new apps and answering a couple of surveys. I love using it because they are always active on social media giving out points and the rewards are always fair. Like just for signing up you already get $1 then if you use a friend’s invite code you get 500 PTS and easy AND your friend gets points in return too! See even simply inviting people earns you money. If you ever happen to try GRABPOINTS please use my invite code: S6FMAC Hope this helps!
Google Keeps made me drop Evernote, SplashId is my alltime favorite Password keeper with sync options to my Mac and Pushbullet is the best in dropping files from one to another of my devices.
So me. I´m connected since 199* when iused to use palm devices and i can tell you, i never, NEVER found n other great note app like google keep (period).
Es file explorer is the best file explorer and it is free, that should be on the list.
Another great and useful unknown app is WalkCam by DGApps. This magnificent app can boost your productivity and safety simultaneously by letting you walk and text while seeing where you are going. Check it out by searching WalkCam in Google play today
Evernote is now only allowing 2 linked mobiles for free, and you have to scrap any others you have linked in 30 days. .... or they charge you 'way over the top' for more ...I'm ditching it ! ....they sure sucked us in then 'WHAMMO !! ....CHARGES !!
Why isn't Nova Launcher Prime on the list?
Regardless if it's actually a launcher more than an "app".

Is there a decent file management app that allows you to move files around? Set up folders with intelligent names, copy to Win laptop, etc.
I am using Total Commander as my primary manager. I like the simple layout and very advanced features. Brings me back to when Norton Commander and wincmd was the shizznizz :-)
I know you're referring to files in general, but just wanted to mention that F-stop app is amazing for photo managing including new folders, naming, moving, copying, etc.
Would some one get rid of these ridiculous adverts!!!!!!
According to me one more app should be included in this list.i.e.Leo Privacy applock.I would love to recommend this app because it is best privacy applock ever.I m currently using this app.It is always good to keep all your personal data protected and secure so that no one can misuse it. To do so you need an app which will help you lock all your personal data.his app not only helps you to protect your personal data but it also has an inbuilt function of clicking images of snoopers every time when there is an error in pattern. Prior you have a front camera to your android mobile device.
To download this app follow these steps:1. download LEO Privacy - Applock, Hide from play store or click here
2 set the desire pattern that you wish to keep and make sure you don't let others know about the password that you have kept.
3 Go on App lock option on the main screen and lock the apps like for eg: facebook, whats app or the apps that you wish to keep it secure from other by clicking on the lock sign beside that app.
4 now your apps that you have locked are secure and safe as those are password protected.
So, when did this comment section turn into a bunch of people, spammers, pretending to be from the States (yes, your incomplete GIBBERISH gave it away) trying to sell some bullshit from a doc (which he's not an M. D.) who no doubt would charge an ungodly amount for nothing more than what a witch doctor would or could do!!
Hi

Wow. Really awesome post..

You missed TSF Launcher 3D Shell. It's an underrated launcher, but it's 3D, has way more editing options than any other launcher, and it makes your phone look next-gen.
Lot of those apps I have instaled and the are very useful; thank you.
My app recommendations: Facebook , Whatsapp, Instagram, Retrica, ES File Explorer, Greenify, Fleksy, Poweramp, Smart Launcher 3.
And: App Delay, Touch Lock, WalkCam, sound the alarm.
If you like news, there is a new RSS Reader "RSS Reader Xoonity"
Cleanmaster, Dictionary, Bible, Waze, Yelp, Surfline, Instapray, Brain Focus and Word Streak Free
ALSO, what ever happened to Zite? Can no longer use since Android let Flipboard take over! Zite was my favorite news app ever. I'm distraught over it.
Here is another app to add to this list, Touch Lock by DGApps. This app stops pocket texting and works really well.
Has anybody tried the Atom Launcher? It's the best launcher out there, not only for the customizing, but also for the storage space.
Thanks for great share!
I have one more i would like to introduce as well
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=alanhuert.aiawake.org
It's pretty cool.
Just wanna find a Podcasts app for myself, hope it’s an amazing way to discover, subscribe to, and play your favorite podcast. My must-have point is numerous free audio and video radio podcast in the Featured tab, or browse Top Charts to see what's hot right now. So that I can add favorite radio and podcast to personal stations that stay up to date when new episodes become available. I wanna try PocketCast, RadioLab, any evaluations on CastBox this new podcast app on Google Play?
Thanks Kris for this informative list of free apps. I do use a few of them already like any.do, Evernote, and photos but will have to check out some of the others as well.

I have bought a new android phone and was looking for free useful apps for my Samsung S5. Great information, I bookmarked this site. Nobody has to go anywhere who is looking for downloading free as well most popular and useful android apps.
Great Article!! This is really useful apps list. I have some of these apps such as Link Bubble Browser, Photos, Unclouded and Evernote. I love them a lot as they are useful for me.Thank you for sharing such a good article.
Good list, encouraged me to try Greenify, and it's nice for keeping some of the others down in the basement until wanted.
In addition to a regular full feature browser I've found it very useful to have a second one that will not clog up storage with cookies, cache, and who knows what else. (Not for anything disreputable but for all the one off web sites that open up from aggregators, RSS, etc. that don't need saving after a quick read.) After testing Dolphin Zero and inBrowser, I settled on Ghostery as small, quick and most reliable at rendering diverse pages.
I went back to Quickpic after trying some other image galleries, but really dislike the new CM interventions in it - was pleased to find safe and free APKs for the last original version 4.5.2 - I'm not pimping APK sites but it's easy enough to find.
Since Google has officially rehabilitated the microSD card in Android M, maybe it will kindly let users move Google Translate, Maps, Drive and similar apps and / or their sometimes huge offline data from internal storage to the microSD.
Great list, thanks. Perhaps you could mention a few top apps for essential services such as safety, security, battery and phone protection.

Android is the largest player in the market of mobile platforms. For development of android app - One app, single objective must be your agenda. While you go to develop mobile apps, you should not try to make it a solution for many needs. Focus on offering with a single objective and develop mobile application around it
I find 1Weather to be better laid out and more attractive than AccuWeather. Also I think QuickPic is sadly no longer in development.

Blackmart app isn't mentioned in the list. You can get paid apps for free. Better still updates are also available.
Send me the apk! Lol
Blackmart is an Illegal app. See thats why its not even available on Play Store.
blackmart is piracy, and if you've read Androidpit's terms of service you'll see they don't support piracy
just sayin
Pocket is the best app ever thanks androidpit.
Skype is a wonderful tool for allowing friends and families to stay in touch with one another. Whether across town or halfway across the world, Skype helps keep people in touch.
Hi Helen, I use a free app called Tango. Its awesome and isnt as glitchy as Skype. I use it all the time to video chat with my brother who lives out of state and has an I-phone. It works great.

"if you're not using WhatsApp, then how exactly are you communicating?" ... Ever heard of Hangouts? (Personally I prefer the lesser of two evils - Google over Facebook - to manage my chats.)
I agree but most of us use Fb and WhatsApp that's y he mentioned it there.. S there are many bugs in the app still able to hit the top spots.. And hangouts really is annoying (my personnel view)..
If someone is looking for a new media player (WrapPlayer) on Android please try our new app. We are testing it now so any feedback would be more than grateful.
Hi everyone.
how can i submit my game on the website.
I do recommend the stuff called CleanWiz whice can help you boost your Android phone's performance just with one tap. It also has many other amazing features. Pretty awesome.
How about an app called green galley? I think it is awesome.
Lockwiz! A app locker! Best app as well
thanks for the info sharing.
I agree with most of your choices, except Drupe. I thought Drupe was simply awful. I can see how teenagers who do a lot of social networks would like it, though.
thanks and you can try this also goo.gl/r2IAmN
I don't have google play on my computer. I need an app that will allow me to download an app for My Ministry Assistant. thank you.
Google Play isn't a program on the computer, it's a mobile app and a website. So if you're on your phone, you open the Google Play app. If you're on your desktop, you open your browser and go to play.google.com

Nice list thanks but there is no podcast app mentioned such as Podcast Addict.
-Why are you now pushing that bloatware FB Messenger when there was an article in your mag a while back stating it was no longer needed? -http://www.androidpit.com/ditch-facebook-messenger
Both good ideas Paul -- think I'll update the list! :)
Textra/zedge/7minworkout/jotterpad/Powergrasp/viral lite/aviary/antennapod/firefox/lazy swipe/link bubble/horizon/cloudmagic just to name a few. They should be added to this list and play books from google is better than Kindle. Also vlc plays music as well. And why not rdio instead of spotify?
This list is good and I have many apps from here, but Android is a very rich ecosystem.
How about OneDrive instead of Dropbox ;)
i agree u onedrive is better den dropbox for me even
id take root explorer over es file manager
es file explorer also works as a root explorer (when your phone is rooted, obviously), you just need to figure out where to activate that feature
personally I prefer es file explorer, for the look, but also all the features it has
The Audible and Kindle apps come pre-installed on some Android phones.
500 Firepaper, TVShow Time, Textra
Check out "Shareables" for Android if you want to find the best apps your friends are using, and that you don't already have. Top free app lists are great, but we usually already have them.
ES File Manager is one of my top apps, and it keeps getting better with more addons. this app can almost do everything you need to do on your device.
Airdroid, News+ (w/InoReader addon), Mint, Chrome, Seesmic
cleanmaster, go launcher prime go sms, darker
Total Commander.
c pas possible ya pas de français français la dedans

I think that without Lastpass no list is complete, not least that to use many of your chosen apps you need a logon and with Lastpass' new integration it is how a password manager should be. I would also like to recommend Evernote for endless not taking, Google maps for being the only map you ever need and to compliment Lastpass - Authy a cross platform and backup-able authenticator app.
Free means free, not trial as in Poweramp.
Google Keep & Google Photos Auto Back-Up, No Crop for Instagram, Kindle
Push Bullet is horrible. Reminds me of Windows programs from 1997
Swipe Lock Screen News, VK, Google Drive, Slack
Last pass, Chambers dictionary, Kindle, Cozi
Last App Switch, Pie Control, Cal, IFTTT, and Zedge.
