The best free music download apps for Android

The best free music download apps for Android

Downloading music seems to be going the way of the dodo, with streaming services like Spotify and Deezer taking over the helm. Still, you might be interested in some ways to download some tunes for free to have on you when you're offline. So, here we've listed some of the best apps to help you do that (legally).

All of these apps can download files for free. However, you should remember that just because something's available as a free music download, it doesn't mean it's there with the copyright owner's permission. There are loads of free music downloads on pirate sites and you can be sure they're not there legally, so always ensure you have Creative Commons or Copyleft permission before downloading MP3s.

Jamendo Music

Jamendo Music allows you to listen to and, more importantly, download more than 500,000 tracks for absolutely nothing. What's remarkable about this app, is that there isn't even any advertising either. There's no such thing as a free lunch, they say? Well sometimes, there is!

You need to sign up for an account to be able to use the app, but after that, you can play any song, any time, with no interruptions. The interface is simple and easy to use and Jamendo has attracted a community of more than 3,500,000 members already!

Radio Player by Audials: best for radio recording

Radio Player by Audials is one of the best ways to download free music you'll find on Android, but it's somewhat unconventional. While you can download mountains of music with Radio Player by Audials, it all arrives, appropriately, from the radio.

Radio Player by Audials boasts tens of thousands of radio stations from dozens of countries; you can begin playing these almost as soon as you can find them and with a couple of taps through its simple menu, you can soon start recording.

It's a comprehensive, well-designed app that comes with great discovery features, EQ controls, and Chromecast support. What's more, Radio Player by Audials allows you to schedule recordings for an automatic supply of fantastic new music from your favorite stations. It's the best app of its kind and a must for free music fans.

SoundCloud: best for quality and quantity

SoundCloud is one of the best free music apps if you don't just want the big hits, as the app is popular with independent or smaller artists who upload their tracks there for anyone to playback for free, with many tracks also available for download. Aside from over 125 million songs, SoundCloud also hosts talk shows, podcasts, basically anything audio.

Every music genre you could possibly imagine is covered. The free version is mostly independent artists and can be a great way to discover new music or get a look into the next big trend or emerging genre. Chart-topping big names are also present, but gave most of their stuff behind the paid version.

Songily: simplicity itself

Songily is a free app that offers a nice simple interface to search for and then play or download the music you want...provided they have it, of course. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for, and looking for a famous song can sometimes offer you a host of covers, live versions, and remixes to safely and legally download, rather than the official album version. Nonetheless, there's still a ton of great tracks available for free, so it's well worth a look.

RockMyRun: best for workouts

RockMyRun lets you download music for offline playback, or simply cache it, which is just as good (and less likely to exist in a legal gray area). RockMyRun delivers DJ-mixed playlists for workout soundtracks and more.

You can match your BPM to your heart rate, filter the playlist length to match your workout, or make use of the myBeat feature to automatically change the tunes to suit your current state. What's better than DJ mixes custom-built for your workout style?

Google Play Music: best for Android fanboys

This is another one of the top Play Store apps for downloading music. Google Play Music is Google's marketplace for music on Android, but it also regularly offers free songs and albums to download. Google Play Music is also a music player in its own right (it even graced our best Android music players list).

Palco MP3: best for Brazilian independence

Palco MP3 is a free platform for independent Brazilian musicians to share their songs with the world. They currently have a roster of more than 100,000 artists spread over a wide range of genres.

Using their app, you can stream radio stations, curate playlists of your favorite tunes and download songs to your smartphone to listen to on the go. Whether you're looking for samba, bossa nova, hip-hop or electronica, Palco has it covered. So dive in and discover what Brazil has to offer.

Advanced Download Manager: best for quick downloads

Advanced Download Manager lets you download three files simultaneously, including MP3s and MP4s. It includes a number of different settings that let you customize how the files are downloaded, including limiting the speed of the download (so you don't use up too much of your bandwidth), and the number of simultaneous downloads. Advanced Download Manager also provides incredibly fast download speeds.

The in-app browser doesn't make searching for free tracks as simple as it could be, but once you find what you're looking for it makes light work of downloading tracks.

Anghami: best for Arabic audio

Fancy some Arabic music? Anghami targets users in the Middle East, where it serves as a similar service to Google Play Music. But for those of us who don't live there, it's an excellent source of free Arabic songs. The free service isn't unlimited and will play some ads, but that's worth putting up with in order to discover some genuinely new music.

Hungama Music: for Indian music

If you're a fan of Indian music of various types, Hungama's got you covered. This app has a huge database of songs (3.5 million) including Bollywood numbers, and songs in Hindi, Punjabi, Gurjurati, Tamil, Telugu etc. Not only that, but it also has videos to download and an integrated player. When you first use the app, you'll get a certain amount of downloads for free (20, when we tried it), so pick your favorites carefully before considering whether you want to pay for more.

Loffee - Lo-Fi Music

Loffee is a simple but wonderful little app for fans of lo-fi beats and stripped back music. This is the kind of stuff I'd listen to on a long train journey, or while lazing around the house on a Sunday afternoon. The different playlist are themed on coffee, such as Dark Roast, Fresh Grinds and Roasted Beans. The UI and artwork is slick. Everything about Loffee just seems effortlessly cool. You can pull up information on the art or music at any time during the shuffle and links to Facebook, SoundCloud, Instagram, and Twitter let you explore further.

Slick and effortlessly cool. Loffee is a lo-fi hit / © Google Play Store

The best thing about Loffee though is that is works offline. So you won't need an internet connection to stream the music. Perfect for flights or car journeys when the signal can be patchy and non-existent.

  • I am looking forward to your next post. Wish you a safe and happy Christmas.

  • Hi, thanks for your kind sharing. I use a laptop more often than a phone, so I am used to using a desktop program called Joyoshare Screen Recorder to record and save a music file. I think one of its advantages is that it can save any part of the audio. I'm glad to share it here in case anyone would need it.

"Youtube Downloader" is what I use. Found it on
XDA developers site. I think it's on F-Droid too. You can download just the audio, in several formats. It's free, but I donate couple times a year. Regular updates & improvements. Developer is very quick to fix any issues. The app also has internal notice when updates are available too.

  • Two more Indian music app Jiosavan, Gaana.
    nice post. :)

  • free movies download app has limitation. Go to google play store and download premium software.

  • All these apps are great but they look and feel old. Most of the times these app developers don't invest the required time in building a good UI/UX. I personally recommend Atomic Music Downloader (com.thecodrr.atomic). Its easy, fast and also has the most intuitive UI in the whole category. Good article by the way.

  • Why would you want to install another app to your phone when you can just use website like ZippyAudio to download music?

    • Because most websites are cluttered with ads (so are most apps) but if you can find a good Android app for downloading music; nothing beats that. You get good streaming support, a better interface, download history, easy management etc. But you are of course right that for only downloading music nothing beats websites. I personally use Atomic Music Downloader on Android Play Store; its fast, easy and relatively ad-free.

  • hey, nice information, I like your sharing, I got a tool called wonderfox free hd video converter factory, a good program for downloading music easily. Share with you.

  • I always like to remind users that a lot of public library digital services include music apps available to residents and paid by city taxes, simply for picking up a library card: e.g. in Toronto the Play Store has apps for huge Naxos Classical and Jazz libraries (NML and NML Jazz), and Hoopla Digital indie music (also movies and comics). I also prefer the human-curated streamed "stations" on the former Sky service (now Radiotunes, JazzRadio, ClassicalRadio, etc.) to the algorithmic playstreams on Pandora, etc. which can be "trained" for half an hour or so but eventually drift into Tops-of-the-Pops to sell the trendy hits. Nice that this article has some specialized audience suggestions.

    • Great suggestion about the 2 Naxos apps. I love libraries and use their public computers to manipulate playlists. My mobile phone is my "jukebox". Music takes up a lot of my SD card storage space. Naxos is one of the best music services around. You can't download, but making the custom playlists are just as good.

  • Really great article. Thanks for the sharing. All apps are good and normally I use Google play music app. But when I want to listen to Gujarati movie songs, folk songs, Classsical songs then I use Jalso App.

  • Hi

I would just like to suggest my own app for a addition in the list or a new list as I think my app is better then all the other apps in that category. You can download the app from and should judge for yourself. Hope you like it.

  • From what i have been reading alot of people are saying these apps are the best thing since sliced bread but all i keep installing is CRAP! I've noticed some I've had in the past that worked great have now followed suit. What happened? Nothing works! Im using an LG android and the only thing that does what it claims is spotify and pandora but we all know u cant listen to it offline and u cant customize a playlist without paying for premium. I tried 4shared and its not available in my country. As if i live in Antarctica. I live in murica! If anyone knows of an app that's not full of it please let me know. Im looking for one that u can save to your phone. One that u can listen to even if your phone service has been disconnected! I dont know about everyone else but im really tired of wasting my time and risking the well-being of my phone by installing shady apps bcuz none of the safe apps do what theyre suppose to.

    • PepMp3 downloader...just google it. It lets you search/preview/and download and lets you decide download location as far as internal/external sdcard

    • You're probably gonna have to root your phone or get Getflix here on abroad pit. You can get a lifetime subscription for like 40$, and you'll be able to stream from just about any music or movie/video app for free and 4ever. Now I now it's a one time fee but you'll also be able to install it on 8 devices/computers, so technically if you know a few people that use, say netflix then you can somehow make you're money back or just bless them with the ultimate capability. Anyway there's also smart dns proxy but you now know the gist of it. A close friend of mine gets a kick out of making others think he hacked the site they're streaming from. Have fun.

ADM is best app for any downloads !! :)

  • You can download free legal music through android app DeMuss music downloader

  • I hate torrents and such, you get trojans, incomplete files and more. I recently got a tip from a friend: Usenext is a service that legally offers tons of downloads in high speed (music, games, movies..) for a montly fee. BUT you can check the 14-day trial, load 300GB stuff for free and KEEP that no matter what. So say you download 10 days straight and then quit easy via your account on usenext and thats it.

  • Videoder is actually pretty good if you want to download music, video
works both way and pretty efficient for me

  • So disappointed Rockmyrun is only a free trial membership then it's $4.99/mo

  • Some time ago I looked through Google Play Music but free pieces were unattractive. I prefer paid "Muzyka Tu i Tam".

  • So, I think hypemachine is a viable option. It cost about $4 for the app, but you can have 25 songs (I think) for offline use. And as far as I know, it's legal. No subscription fee either.

  • I'm surprised you didn't just put utorrent. Biggest piracy app there is!

  • Hi Guys, I found a Crazy Awesome app to Experience Music, It's " FlipBeats"

FlipBeats Rock's I love this SUPER AWESOME APP, NO ADDS, the sound is neat Great App

  • What!!! Free mp3 downloading apps? On top of that 5 options, hmmm.. its tempting but the truth is none of the the above suggested apps are found in play store.... Ho ho ho..... Merry Christmas folks or jokes (dare I say)

  • I listen to BeatGuide all the time, which has streams from all the major clubs in any city you choose and Spotify and YouTube are brilliant too. I always stream because I'm always on WiFi. I just have a few regular albums saved on my phone for non-WiFi areas. Or I take my iPod if I need more.

  • I personally like Soundloader for Soundcloud which allows you to download music from soundcloud for offline listening. As many artists upload their work to Soundcloud for free themselves, it's piracy guilt free downloads!

  • The artists make such a small margin on downloads, but they gain so much from the free sharing of their music and subsequent ticket sales. I don't necessarily think it's a bad idea for the artist or audience. Download the TED app and check out the awesome video 'The art of asking' about music piracy pros and cons :)

    • That's just you trying to make some excuses. Unless the author himself allowed free download, it's piracy. Period!

      • My1 Jun 30, 2014 Link to comment

that's true story. I wont try to accuse you but one of my theories is that black app stores can cancel revenue from your app store but since you dont give out music it wont matter you. (IMPORTANT NOTE: JUST A THEORY, I wont accuse anyone)

@bojan seems we understand each other quite well since we know that we both like anime.

And just coz of my music widget, where you saw the angel beats soundtrack listed...

  • +1 Philipp
I personally thinks that it's unethical to promote pirating music. Artists and musicians work as hard as app developers too. Just because they're in the different field doesn't mean we can ignore their rights.

  • My1 Jun 19, 2014 Link to comment

wait a sec, this reveals controversy.
you can download music for free, for which you usually have to pay, which is piracy.
one of you (Loie) said at the topic of alternate markets, about the topic why Blackmart wasnt in the list:
"AndroidPIT doesn't support pirating apps, and only getting paid apps for free when the deal is officially closed with the developers themselves."
so pirating apps is bad, but Music is okay, hm...

but seriously, I dont want to attack anyone, it just caught my eyes and is irritating me...

    • Read the disclaimer.

      • My1 Jan 20, 2015 Link to comment

might be true but still they dont list such methods for apps and similar things, and they are straight against it, which looks stupid when looking at this article even with the disclaimer.
