How to save your phone from water damage

If you act fast after dropping your phone in water, you might be able to prevent damage. Follow our tips below to try and save your device!

Obviously, you should first remove the phone from the water as quickly as possible. The longer it stays there, the more water or liquid will seep through the cracks and openings. Once it's out, there are certain things you need to do right away, and others you should absolutely avoid doing, in order to prevent water damage.

What not to do

  • Do not turn it on
  • Do not plug it in/try to charge it
  • Do not press any buttons or keys
  • Do not shake, tap or bang the phone
  • Do not blow on it. This could send water into other internal parts of the phone that it hadn't already reached, causing more damage in the process
  • Do not use a blow dryer - it can have the same effect as described above. Heat could also cause further damage.

10 steps to saving your water damaged phone

1. Turn it off if, it isn’t already, and hold it upright.

2. Remove your SIM and microSD cards from their slots.

3. If you have an older phone, you might be able to open up the back and remove the battery. However, since most current smartphones do not have removable batteries and are hard to disassemble, the best step would be to take it to a phone repair shop before attempting to take it apart yourself. There are DIY repair kits and YouTube tutorials you could follow, however, if you are not tech-savvy, taking it to a professional is always better.

If you can, remove the battery. / © NextPit

4. Use a cloth, sleeve or paper towel to dab your phone dry. Avoid spreading the liquid around, because that could push it into more of the phone's openings. Just soak up as much as possible.

5. If the water damage is more extensive, you can use a vacuum to carefully suck out water stuck in the cracks that are harder to get to. Make sure any small parts, such as the microSD card, SIM card, and battery, are out of the way before attempting this.

6. Bury the phone in a ziplock bag full of uncooked rice. Rice is great for absorbing liquid and this is actually a common method for drying smartphones and tablets. You can also buy dedicated phone drying pouches, which are worth having at home if you're the clumsy type. If you don't have them already, don't bother going out to buy one. Time is of the essence, so get your phone into rice as soon as possible.

7. Let your phone dry for a day or two. Do not be tempted to switch it on to see if it still works. Put your SIM card in an old phone, or ask a friend or relative if they have a spare device you can borrow.

8. After a couple of days, you can remove the phone from the rice, insert the battery and switch it on.

9. If your phone doesn't turn on, try charging it. If that doesn't work, the battery may be damaged. You could try a replacement battery, or consider taking your smartphone to a repair shop to be checked by a professional.

10. If your smartphone has turned on and it is running as it should, you should still keep a close eye on it for the next few days, to see if you notice anything out of the ordinary. Play some music to check the speakers and ensure the touch screen still responds as it should.

In the future, avoid taking the phone with you when you go to the pool, use the bathroom or do the dishes to avoid the possibility of accidents.

Water resistant cases

Hopefully these steps have helped you rescue your phone from death by drowning. If you want to protect your phone from water damage in future, you can also purchase a waterproof phone case. There are some good options available from brands such as Otterbox, Griffin Survivor and Catalyst.

Water-resistant and waterproof phones

A number of phones are advertised as water-resistant or waterproof. Be aware that when phone manufacturers say this, it only applies under a special set of circumstances. A phone's resistance to water often depends on the clarity of the water, the depth of submersion, and the length of time for which it is submerged. We wouldn't advise testing your smartphones' water resistance capabilities by putting it in the washing machine or throwing it in the pool.

Pay specific attention if your phone has an IP53 rating - that means it is only partially water-resistant and will not withstand water sprays. Although manufacturers might claim otherwise, smartphones with this rating can even get damaged if used in the rain.

It's also important to remember that no smartphone is fully waterproof. However, devices with an IP67 and IP68 rating are as close as you can get at the moment. Phones with these ratings are also becoming more and more common, especially among flagships compared to a few years ago. That's not always the case with mid-range devices.

Here is a quick list of some of the current smartphones with IP67 and IP68 ratings:

Uncooked rice method has been largely debunked. Ifixt and plenty more say it's worse than doing nothing.

Update the article to current factual standards please.

So when I drop a phone with IP67 or IP68 in water, when can I charge it again or use the USB-C Plug for headphones? Doint this with a wet plug seems critical, isn't it?

Actually, if you only dry it by hand you won't be able to remove the corrosion which will start to form when your device hits water. You might be able to turn it on, but it will slowly die because of the corrosion inside.

My mom dropped her phone in the toilet - twice! But we found a repair center who works with this company Techsave which has a special technology to save your phone from water. And it worked - both times - and all her photos where still there and all. Just saying.

Unfortunately, despite many people think the most damage is made by the water, the big problem is in the mineral salts that are contained in the water. If water comes in contact with the electronic circuit, it can leave a layer of minerals on the circuit. Minerals, little by little attract humidity and can become very corrosive, causing damage even after months. If you phone is completely filled with water after a long permanence, the first thing is to remove the battery (if possible) and the second should be (I know it may sound strange) to wash it in highly distilled water.

I did most of the things you arent supposed to do... Do i throw mine away, or is it still even worth a try?

Edit: i shook my phone, tried to turn it on 20 times, blew into every hole, and pressed basically every button before i read this, did the steps, and checked on my phone 25 hours later. It was about 80% functional. i found a few problems, such as the back button not working, the wifi not connecting, and the screen having way more problems than usual. im going to let it dry in rice for about 12 more hours or so and update this when i get it back.

    Hi Friends,

Today my baby have put my Samsung J7 Max in water bucket, immediately I tried to switch off the buttons was working but I cannot select the power-off option then I have hit the bottom side on my thy few water drops came out then I kept it in sun light for 10-15 mins still not working, I immediately went to mobile repair shop he shocked me with answer : there is only 50-50 changes as it should be removed from front side as we cannot take the battery out I tensed.

I run home again kept in sun light but this time putting a silk cloth wrap and kept for 15 mins checked later the touch is responding but there are few white marks on the screen. After watching few videos I have kept it in rice box hope this should work.

I suggest you not to panic and do keep your mobile in sun light and try few steps it should work, I will post again once I take my mobile out of the box ;-)

Keep digging for the answer folks....

Silica gel, which "phone drying packs" are typically made of, is far superior to uncooked rice. That being said, don't expect miracles unless your phone is at least partially water resistant. You can get your phone to work again, but it's time to start looking for a replacement once this happens.

Or, just throw it away and buy a new one ;)
    Or, DON'T get it wet.
It still amazes me, when I see coworkers & friends complaining about broken screens, headphone jacks, charge ports not working. I've had 5 smartphones in 8 years. NONE have ever had a broken screen, dropped, dunked in water/wet or anything. The Note1 I had, I did have to replace the charge port multiple times because the $%^&# battery wouldn't make it through the day (which is why my last 3 phones have had 4,000mAH batteries).

I love it, how to fix a water damaged phone #3. Remove the back and battery LOL unless your like me and stick to old phones with that option your out of luck. With a removable power source you do not need IP68 rating, removing the power source stops the damage. Let it dry and it is fine. My Note 4 and S3 have both been drowned several time and they are both still running fine. Simply because I could remove the battery. Non removable batteries are all about planed obsolescence and nothing else. Just greed from the manufacture that decide how long you should use your phone so you have to buy a new one sooner.

Lol, it reminds me of my stupidity when I had a Droid turbo back then and when it's screen was dirty, I always used to wash it with a lot of water. It never hurt my turbo in any way. But one time I was listening to a music and while the speaker was playing the music, I placed the phone under a running tap and speaker volume went too low and it went dead. Earpiece was also not working. I was not worried and just turned the phone off. And after half an hour I turned it on, speaker was working but earpiece worked after shaking the phone. Another method I have heard working is to deeply inhale the speaker area with your mouth and try to suck the water.

(Samsung galaxy j7) The damage isn't so bad however, it's home, back, and window buttons randomly activate and are unresponsive sometimes. I took it all apart, battery and micro sd. I couldn't get the sim card out so i left it considering the only areas hit with milk where the bottom holes for the charger, headphones, and a random little hole. its now sitting in rice. Anything else i should do?

My cellphone got wet from a soda spill, for days it would not recharge, because of overheating. I disassembled the phone, with the circuit board exposed, dabbed it with a wet cloth to clean it, blew into the holes of the steel protective cases housing the cpu, etc. then placed the phone in the freezer. After 5 hours, took it out of freezer, saw it was moist with wet residue from the freeze process, let it dethaw, and recharged phone. Phone works great now.

Mine was in my pocket in a hot tub for 30 minutes my S5. A few days later the screen stopped working. I turned on my oven to just a hair under 200 degrees and put my phone with the battery out and the back cover off on a piece of wood glass side up. I left it in for five minutes pulled it out it was hot but I could still grab it with my bare hands. Then I placed it in my freezer on a bag of ice for five minutes. After this one or two of my numbers to unlock the phone worked but the rest of the screen was still unresponsive. I repeated this procedure two more times for a total of three times. The last time I left my phone in the oven for almost 10 to 12 minutes. After it was cool from the ice I put the battery back in and the touch screen was fully responsive again in all ways. My theory is that heating it this way evaporated or removed all of the water inside of the phone and any on or in the display as well. It is now two days later and my phone still works great in every way just as before this happened. I never did try the rice technique or any other technique prior to this good luck. Perhaps heating it two 160 degrees or so or longer let's say for 15 to 20 minutes might be a safer approach. I wish I had several water logged phones to test this hypothesis.

Hello Tj Martin. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! For the first time EVER I put my phone in my jeans back pocket and when I went to use the toilet, "plop" went the phone in the bowl!!! I didn't panic, I turned off the phone immediately and wiped as much water off as I could (My phone is a Samsung A5 so I could not remove the battery) . Then I filled an ice bucket with rice and submerged the phone in it upright. But during that night I read your suggestion and so after 24 hours in rice had past I placed my phone, glass screen up in a toaster oven at 160 degrees for 20 minutes. Then I let it cool to room temperature and now... MY PHONE IS WORKING FINE!!! Thanks again for this "oven drying" method!

2hrs ago I dropped my Lenovo Vibe K4 note in a bucket of water, took it out as soon as I can. Seemed fine for first few minutes then it started to show sign as it shows while starting up but couldn't start and kept on doing so then some chinese or korean or japanese text came on screen till then I started to diassemble it so don't know if it got shutdown due to short circuit in IC or because I undid some connections it. While diassembling it I destroyed my battery but all the parts are apart now. Kept them under a warm led bulb as it is the only the that I have at 06:00AM in the morning for a little warmth for water droplets to evaporate. I am seeing forward to order a new battery and
a strip of some silicon wire, I guess. Which was under the battery connecting motherboard to some other part which I destroyed.
Also waiting to go out and grab some silica gel packets to keep with my mobiles parts to get out every drop of water rice will be 2nd in my list of options.
Hope it does the trick and my smartphone works again.

Hi all, I am the same guy who commented the above comment.
Last year my brother was also in the same situation when he dropped his phone in water. He didn't know what to do and left the cell as it was, after a month or so when he went to the service center they charged him amount that was equivalent to the phones value, stating that it has carbon in somewhere and motherboard needs to be changed(maybe they were true). But you can't believe these service centres. I had no option but to take risk and open every bits and pieces of my phone(because my battery was irremoveable). I have been to service center and they were charging me ₹1500 $22) for the battery and ₹7000 ($103)for the motherboard, I came home ordered a battery online for ₹675 ($9.9)and received it today and installed it in my phone and now it works fine.I am happy that it saved me ₹7825 ($115).

Happy ending! My phone recovered.... eventually. Hope the details in my story (below) help!

I had had a stressful week! I thought it would be awesome to watch anime on my phone while I soaked in the tub! Relaxing right?! Until my phone slipped into the bathtub!! NOT relaxing!

It took a good month for my phone to completely recover but here's what I did- good and bad:

I took the case off! Yay!, now the water got in more and there are w tiny pieces of paper that turn red when there's water damage. That's okay, I got the warranty that covered everything!

WRONG! I was confused by what the salespeople told me when I bought the phone and somehow it wasnt covered.

SO, when it happened, I removed sd cards and battery- good. I put it in rice- good. Kept pressing buttons- bad. My dad put it halfway in the oven on lowest temp- bad. We used a hair dryer- bad. I put it in rice- again- good. Also, I prayed.

Okay so a quick note:: Yes a phone is trivial thing to pray about. But I was so broke. God is cool- He always understands what I'm going through. He helped me calm down about it and stop worrying as much.

Signs of life: First few days, when I'd turn it on, it shut itself off to a blue screen. Next few days, it turned on for very short periods, but touchscreen didnt work. The only way I could turn it on, was to reinsert the battery several times in a row- I literally had to do this dozens of times a day. It shut off in the middle of whatever I was doing. Then, it only shut itself off when I wasnt using it for a few minutes. After a couple weeks, I still had to reinsert the battery a few times a day to turn it on after it shut itself off, but it was working for several hours at a time.

After a month- it was all better!! I hope your phone gets better too!

I dropped my Galaxy S4 in a bath tub full of water. I dried it with a towel immediately and it worked normally. After a few seconds the screen just went black. I took out the battery then put it back in and then I tried switching it on but I had no luck. I then put it in some rice.
It's the second time it falls into some water. Will that affect it?

I accidentally dropped my phone in the water but i took it out of the water as quickly as possible just like the article above said. after the accident i dryed it by my shirt and dry almost all visible spots .But the only mistake i made was that i turned it on right after taking it out of the water. actually it didnt turned on, but a few minutes later i took the battery off my android and tried inserting it again and it turned on. but it wont swipe or touch to shutdown. second time i took out the battery again and it turned on .. and this time i can now swipe it and touch it .. it was a relief so i turned it on sleep again like nothing happen. but when i checked it out again for a few minutes ... it was looping in its booting logo again and again. i took out the battery again and buried it in an uncooked rice for about 3hrs but it still looping idk if theres a possible way to fix it pls help me.

Mine did the same wierd things. It took a few weeks for it to get totally better. I suggest putting it in rice. Keep turning it on and try to use it, it will hopefully get better and better. My phone wasnt usable at all for the first week. Only a little better the second week, then got a lot better until normal. I hope yours does too!!!

Never used with a phone, but the rice thing really worked to rescue an MP3 player that drowned in a downpour while on a run. It took several days in the rice, and I'd already ordered a replacement after the first couple of days. One other suggestion when the phone is dry but seems bricked - a "hard reset" works on various models. I used it three times after dropping my old LG phone on hard surfaces so it wouldn't restart. Instructions for models that support hard reset may be in the user manual or at the hard-reset[dot]com website.

1 or 2 years ago when i still had my S3 Mini i dropped it in a glass of water (was playing some game on top of the glass and it slipped, yes sounds awesome xd) and then it started pressing buttons and such things on its own. i switched it off and it couldn't turn on again (i almost had a heart attack xdd). Then i held it in front of the heater for half an hour (my band was burning). Then i turned it on immediately and it showed that battery was at 60 or 70 degrees Celsius. i left it on the bed whole afternoon to cool off and when i took it from there in the evening the spot was hot like a meteorite had fallen down there. Since then i kept it away from water :D
But few months ago my S5 (current phone) was hot cuz i played some game long time so i washed it in the sink with cold water to cool it off. Until then i had done this before a lot and it was fine. Well not this time, screen started pressing itself randomly, capacitive buttons were pressed randomly by themselves and i had to spend 50 bucks to replace the screen sensors under the display. Now none of my phones are going anywhere near any water, even if they make them better water survivors than submarines. xD

My huawei phone was dropped in a pond while I was at the park, and I had to wait for about an hour before I could get it in rice. Now, when I turn it on, the screen is not working and there are whitish streaks around the edges. Another thing to add is that a couple months ago I cracked my screen, would this have anything to do with the screen not working??

-Removing battery is the first thing one should do.
-Then keep patience and let the drying agent(rice, silica gel etc.) do its work.

i dropped my phone into the loo. I did put it in rice after. The battery definitely isn't damaged, it charges and vibrates when i turn it on. The little notification light flashes and my phone even makes notification sounds. Only thing is, the screen won't light up. Maybe it is useful to mention that about 2-3 weeks ago i had to get my phone screen repaired because the LED screen was smashed. Was it the water damage or the bash it got from dropping that is why the screen won't turn on? Is there any way i could fix it myself? Also my phone is a HTC Desire 626 so the battery can be pulled out a bit but it's attached with wire to the phone (I did pull off the battery a bit when i put it in the rice).

I accidentally dropped my phone, Nokia Lumia 635 in the loo. I've always dropped it on the ground but it never had a effect only now that its in water. Oh god! But i took it out in seconds and i took everything out (battery and sim) and i saw that there was so much water so i soaked it up using a towel and then i started shaking and slightly banging it on the cloth to shake out all of the water but then gave up and came to this and many other websites that said to put it in uncooked rice. So it was in there till morning and OMG!!! it worked !! it turned on! thanks so much

Very nice post. Here my problem is for Lenovo A7000. It is water damaged phone. Since the owner does not know to immediately remove battery, sims and memory cards, he kept the phone aside and after 10 days he gave it to me. The phone is turning on, able to enter RECOVERY, FACTORY, META modes also. And sometimes, it normally boots . Touch and LCD are also working fine. Flashed the Stock ROM also and it went on very well.

Camera also damaged. The only problem is continuous restart. Is there any solution for my issue ? I have 3 Lenovo phones like this water damaged. Expecting an early reply to REMOVE THE WATER DAMAGE...

Upon closer look at the camera I can see little water droplets inside. I'm going to put it inside a ziplock with uncooked rice inside it overnight. I hope this works. And I hope I'm doing it right. Also those silica dry bags you get with shoes, electronics etc? save them too and put them in a bag with rice, and super dry it , I've been using mine for years and they work like a champ, just don't eat the rice afterwards.

I dropped my Samsung Galaxy S3 mini (out of contract now) into a full mug of hot coffee (totally submerged). I immediately pulled it out. Dried the outside first with clean paper towel. Removed the outside holster case, the back panel of the phone, the battery and the SIM card and dried all of those carefully with paper towel. I dried the exposed phone as well. Then I let everything sit for about a half hour (finishing getting ready to go to work). Put it back together, turned it on and it booted up but kept saying "Sim card removed...Unable to read Sim card...Your device will restart" with a white bar below with "Restart" printed in it. I hit the restart prompt and it restarted. Well, again, after a few seconds gazing at the home screen the "Restart" thing kept showing up. I asked some coworkers (younger than me) what to do and they said to buy a bag of rice. A grocery store was next door so I bought a bag of rice and placed the phone with the back and battery removed (left the SIM card in this time in case it needed more drying off) and left it in the rest of the work day. When I got home, I removed it from the rice and put it back together again. Same thing happened with the restart, but it wouldn't show
    up as quick as before.
Long story short it is now exactly two weeks later and the phone works as it used to except that the lighted "menu" and "back/return" buttons on the bottom are the only things that still do not work. So I just went under settings to "Accessibility" and scrolled down to the "Dexterity" section and clicked "ON" the Assistant menu. After you click that, a little white square box pops up with 4 smaller light gray squares inside of it. When you click on that, you'll immediately see four functions to choose from. The home and settings are permanent, you cannot move them from the basic screen but you can add 2 or more functions (there are 13 more to choose from). I really just needed the menu and back/return functions but you can add any or all of what are shown. The home function takes you back to your home screen but the settings function is for this "Edit" section of Assistant Menu" in case you ever want to change the functions you want to use here.
To customize the small white box with your own function choices just touch the "Settings" function shown in the white box. You will then see "Dominant hand" and "Edit". When you "touch" Dominant hand, you make your choice. That takes you back to the same screen where now you would "touch" Edit - Reorder or remove menu. Now a large screen appears with 13 more functions to choose from. Press and hold on one of them until it turns light gray then move it up to the upper box. You will notice that you cannot remove the home and settings icons.
The square white box will now be on any screen you work on. It can be annoying in that it shows up and blocks you from seeing a vital portion of your viewing screen, but all you have to do then is just touch it and move it where it will be out of your way.

In short I was hoping my phone would eventually work, again. For me it was worth waiting two weeks because the main feature I love about this phone is the "mini" of it. I like it smaller because I clip it to my belt/waist which is very convenient for the type of work I do all day. My phone is 3 years old and the original battery lasts two days without recharging, probably because I rarely have my Mobile Data turned on. I only use the internet to check UPS orders twice a week. If I could, I'd keep this phone until I die.

The problem with rice is that it can't tell you when it's finished drying the device. People get antsy and try to charge/turn the phone on before it's fully dry and in so doing ruin the phone. Plus the rice dust isn't good for the phone.

If you happen to be in the United States, find a local store with a Redux machine. (Redux.com) This machine is amazing. Steps 9 and 10 in this article are the steps that actually can damage a wet phone beyond repair. Just getting your phone wet doesn't kill it...running power through a wet phone kills it.

I dropped my Motorola Moto G (2015 model) in the toilet the other day and it stopped working...

I basically did the majority of what was suggested NOT to do, including the following, in my panic following the incident:
-Do not turn it on if it was off or use it in any way.
-Do not press on any buttons or keys.
-Do not shake, tap or bang the phone.
-Do not take the phone apart, this could void your warranty. If you absolutely need to take it apart, do this only if you have experience.
-Do not try to blow on it. This could send water into other internal parts of the phone which haven't been reached yet, causing more damage in the process.
-Do not apply heat of any kind, including a blow dryer or microwaving it. Also, don’t do the opposite and stick it in the freezer.

I did do the majority of the recommended things though too...

What should I do? I only got it a couple of weeks ago...

I've also dropped my phone (moto G) into water yesterday. Unfortunately, I turned it off, shook it and blew inside to dry out. It was working yesterday, but it is not working this morning. I put it into silica gel and planning to wait 1-2 days according to the recommendation. I am worried... What should I do?

It is better to place it into the rice. Make sure it is airtight.
What i did is, I placed my phone in my car and with the excessive sun heat all the water and moisture dried away. My phone is working fine now

Rice really does work. It saved a very old Blackberry my daughter dropped in the cat's water dish. I had to hack the little cursor trackball which was ruined, but the phone worked.

Interesting that you say DO NOT push any buttons and yet the first WHAT TO DO is "turn off the phone" which means pressing a button....

In the best case situation, it's better to avoid pushing any buttons. However, turning off the phone is important as well...what people shouldn't do is go crazy and press buttons repeatedly to see if the phone works right when it's fished out of the water.

You could simply remove the battery (if it's a phone with a removable battery). I'm pretty sure the phone turns off that way. ;)
