Facebook unveils new 3D photos: here's how to do it

Facebook has announced the arrival of 3D photos on its virtual reality portal. Viewable on apps, PCs and VR glasses such as Oculus Go, 3D photos can be taken directly from your smartphone using photos taken in portrait mode. The result is amazing!

The new technology presented by Facebook 360 will allow you to share with friends and acquaintances a new type of 3D images. The images, made from a shot taken in portrait mode, maintain a clear separation between subjects in the foreground, second floor and background. As the feed flows or the smartphone tilts, these images show an effect called parallax to give the post a further sense of depth.

How to create a 3D photo on Facebook

To post a 3D photo on the famous social network, just follow these simple steps:

  1. Take a picture in portrait mode with your compatible smartphone.
  2. Create a new post on Facebook.
  3. In the list of functions in which there are activities, stickers, GIF, check-in (and more) from today you will find the item 3D Photo.
  4. Choose the photo, select the Share button and Facebook will take care of the rest!

The 3D photos can be viewed immediately by everyone via smartphone, desktop browser or Oculus VR viewers while the ability to create 3D photos is in gradual rollout. If you don't have the appropriate option yet, don't worry, soon the new feature will come to you!

Look for example at this beautiful image taken by the developer Leonardo Pirro who has already received the function and allowed us to share his shot. This picture, for example, was taken with iPhone X, a sign that iOS devices could be the first to receive the function.

What do you think of the new Facebook function? Have you already received it? Share your best 3D shots in the comments!

I was looking for an application which creates 3D like photos similar to what Facebook allows to post from iPhones (aka 3D Photo).
Checked tons of apps and it seems like only this one does the trick on Android. It's called Post3D - you can find it on Goole Play.
Oh, almost forgot - you need to take a picture in Portrait mode and open/find it with/in the app.
It even allows to share it. But doesn't allow to preview in Facebook
      Enjoy!

There's a new app that will allow users with any smartphone, from older Androids to the latest iPhones, create, view and share Facebook 3D Photos, and it's called LucidPix. With it there's no need for multiple cameras or special sensors, or hand-made depth maps; all the 3D work is the result of advanced AI.

You can post with Android now! This tool extracts depth maps so you can post your Android photos using Facebook's new web upload option for 3D Photos---extract the depth map using OmniVirt's extractor tool

I don't see the 3D Photo option, and my Facebook app doesn't have an update waiting. =/

I'm sure taking photos that can be transferred to a 3D format may interest a percentage of users on Facebook (who has to find a way to compete with their Instagram, or Snapchat, Twitter, etc) .... but in the end? I believe those still on Facebook just want more security - as in not having their profile hacked, immediate elimination of fake profiles, not having to grant Facebook access to various personal info, etc.
