Samsung Galaxy S3 vs. HTC One: Is My Galaxy S3 Outdated?

In terms of hardware, the Samsung Galaxy S3 could very well be expired soon. When compared to some other smartphones out there, it still has a fighting chance and has been significantly reduced in price. But how does it look when compared to the HTC One?

I'm the happy owner of a Samsung Galaxy S3 and I refuse to put it to rest. Despite its many scratches after having been dropped on the floor an innumerable amount of times, it still works to perfection. ROMs like Rootbox allow me to customize it exactly how I want. The only thing that I can't change is its list of specifications.

This is exactly why I need to compare it: to see if the HTC One totally out-does the Samsung Galaxy S3 when it comes to the elements that cannot be changed. On the other hand, the S3 might still be in the same league. The specifications that I will compare are the display, the performance, the camera and the battery.

In terms of specifications, the Samsung Galaxy S3 is equipped with a 4.8'' Super AMOLED HD screen with a resolution of 720x1080. The HTC One with its 4.7'' screen is almost the same size. It has full HD at1920x1080 pixels. Though the S3 is bigger on paper, it doesn't really make a noticeable difference. We also compared the pixels:

The fact that the pixels are more noticeable is in theory not something that you really want. But in its daily usage, no one is looking at a screen that closely. What really matters is the manner in which you're looking at the screen, whether it works in the glare of direct sunlight or at which angle the screen becomes invisible. It's worth pointing out that the Galaxy S3 has more vibrant colors, which is typical of AMOLED screens. That being said, the HTC One offers better viewing for the outdoors.

Both devices are powered by a quad-core processor. The difference lies in the manufacturer. The Galaxy S3 is equipped with the Exynos 4412, while the HTC One sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon S600. I tested out both of their performances by playing Temple Run 2.

The results are in: Samsung Galaxy S3 is still up to par. Both quad-core processors do the same job when playing undemanding games like Temple Run 2. There's not need to change smartphones to be able to play simple games.

This is where we see the greatest difference between the two devices. The HTC One surprised us all with its Ultrapixel technology and innovative software. A clear example of this is Zoe. Here are two pictures captured by the HTC One and the Galaxy S3.

In terms of image quality when taking a look at either picture, there is hardly any difference. The S3 offers colors that are closer to reality, while the results with the HTC One were quite pale. HTC's big advantage and innovation lies in its software. However, there exists a ton of applications that offer pretty much the same services in the Google Play store. My honest opinion? I'm still sticking with my Galaxy S3.

Coming back to hardware, the Galaxy S3 has a 2100 mAh battery against the 2300 mAh that the One boasts. The only problem is that the HTC One has a screen, camera and other features that consume require more power, which makes it only logical that it would have more milliamps. My Galaxy S3 that has already done its time still outlasts 24 hours of usage, but at the end, it's only scraping by. The HTC One, on the other hand, couldn't fulfill this feat. What's more, Samsung's device is also advantaged in the fact that the battery is interchangeable.

With the Battery Widget app you can see detailed information on your device's battery usage. The HTC One is on the right, Samsung Galaxy S3 on the left.

Bottom Line

Once again, the Samsung Galaxy S3 doesn't appear to be outdated, yet! Not only will I keep mine, I will also continue to recommend it, especially now that its price has dropped enormously with the HTC's device, compared to the old Galaxy model, costs quite a bit more. At the end of the day, the HTC One is in fact very appealing with its impressive software and new functions, but is it worth the cost?

Do you think the Samsung Galaxy S3 is already outdated?

It was time to replace my evo 4g. Based on what ppl have told me I jumpedon the the s3. I was extremely disappointed in the phone, for starters it felt cheap like a happy meal toy the plastic did not make me confident it would last 2 year. Every time I turned it on I felt as if I was having ads shoved down my throat . It did have quite a few bells and whistles but I saw most of them as useless and constantly having to change the settings to make the phone do what I want it do. the phone ffroze on me 3 times in a 4 day period. I was unable to access my bank account on the s3 and several other sites all I got was a blue lego, my 3 year old evo 4g had no problems performing these tasks. I returned it on the 5 day when my sister texted me from her s3 telling me her screen broke she did not drop it she went from a hot car with no ac into a cold house with ac. The temperature change cracked the screen. I bought the HTC one instead and it is wiping the floor with the s3, it has killer speakers the screen res is better instead of of constant ads the dash was full of news and useful info, I am able to access my bank once again on my phone. The power button doubles as an infred sensor to make using the phone as tv remote seamless and usful unlike having to use dnla one s3 witch was setup intensive to get working make it not useful. HTC one feels solid it made of metal and has a lol weight and don't feel like it's going to just slide out of my pocket while in running or climbing at work
