It is a real pleasure that from the location of the launch event in London we can officially announce the arrival on the market of the new Honor 20 family. The range of devices includes a Lite, Honor 20 and Pro model. What makes them different?
Let's be honest: the brand's flagship never particularly surprised us about the technical specifications as they shared with the Huawei P series practically all the components. This year, Honor has decided to differentiate itself more from the parent company by presenting devices that, for better or for worse, do not copy the same characteristics of P30 or P30 Pro. Honor 20 and 20 Pro are already distinguished by their design.
For its new top-of-the-range products, Honor uses a new production process for the glass body called Dynamic Holographic Design, which, according to the company, is extremely difficult to obtain. George Zhao, president of Honor, says: "Honor's philosophy of continuous improvement is reflected in everything we create. Honor's latest Triple 3D Mesh technology is the result of a state-of-the-art artisanal manufacturing process. Its assembly process is extremely precise and complex and has been presented for the first time on board the Honor 20 series and in the industry. [...] Despite the enormous challenge that this entails, Honor is still committed to creating a glass back cover with this technique. We are motivated to offer the best to our users.
Only 20 of the more than 100 back layers produced meet our stringent standards - George Zhao
Honor has focused much of its attention on the photography industry. The Honor 20 Pro will be equipped with 4 rear cameras and one front camera dedicated to selfies:
- Main Camera 48MP (Sony IMX 586), f/1.4, OIS, AIS, EIS
- Telephoto 8MP, f/2.4, 3x zoom (5x Hybrid, 30x Digital), OIS
- 16MP Wide Angle, f/2.2, 117°, Wide Angle
- 2MP Macro lens, f/2.4, 4cm minimum shooting distance
- Front camera 32MP, f/2.0
So no periscope and this is one of the first differences with P30 Pro. Also missing is the ToF sensor that has been replaced by a real macro lens, the quality of which is still to be verified due to the only 2MP available for this function.
In any case, the company decided to focus everything on the main camera equipped with the now famous Sony sensor that Honor equips with a bright lens with f/1.4 focal length, the first of its kind in a smartphone. We expect impressive night shots in combination with the Super Night Mode AIS shooting mode.
Honor 20 shares most of these features: it loses its telephoto lens and gains an additional 2MP sensor dedicated to depth of field and bokeh effects.
Both smartphones share a 6.26" IPS screen with a resolution of 2340x1080 pixels. Both Honor 20 and Honor 20 Pro give up the fingerprint reader under the display in favor of a side sensor, both have a hole in the display that houses the main camera. The software responsible for the management is Android 9.0 Pie with proprietary interface Magic UI 2.1, so it is called the version of EMUI dedicated to Honor smartphones and that is now developed separately.
Even under the hood the specifications are almost equivalent: Kirin 980, GPU Turbo 3.0 and Virtual 9.1 Surround Sound will give water to the gamers but also to those who want the highest level of performance. Honor 20 will be on the market with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal memory, Honor 20 Pro will have 8GB of RAM and 256GB of memory.
To differentiate the two smartphones there is also the capacity of the battery: 4000mAh for Honor 20 Pro that fall to 3750mAh on Honor 20. 22.5W fast charging is available for both models.
