Limit your screen output

The screen is the biggest power sucker on your Android device, so the more you can do to limit its demands on your battery, the better. Simply making your screen timeout setting as short as humanly possible can have a significant effect on your battery, as can dropping the display brightness.

What is screen timeout, I hear you ask? Screen timeout is the amount of time your screen stays active once you've stopped using it. By default it is often set to a longer time than is necessary and most people don't ever think to change it.

Personally, I can live with 15 seconds, for others it's 30 seconds. But it doesn’t take a math genius to realize both of these are orders of magnitude better than two minutes. Go to Settings > Display > Sleep

While you're at it, drop your screen brightness to as low as you can possibly handle, and make sure auto-brightness is turned off, as all that adjusting of the brightness consumes a lot of battery. You can always manually bump up your brightness when you need it (and then straight back down afterward). Go to Settings > Display > Brightness

Ok, so it was really two secrets, but these two simple display settings will make a significant difference to your Android battery life. Now you just have to look at it less.

    I think you're wrong and don't give android users nearly enough credit. I'm sure most readers waited in high anticipation, with a drum roll, waiting for this big battery life saving secret and....

    ...wait did he just say screen timeout? Doy de doy! Derr! Duh! Damnit I got Rick rolled again.

    Android needs to better on battery life I am considering moving off of the OS and back to blackberry for better management of powers, apps, etc

    Having the screen time out while using a phone is annoying. I set mine to 30 minutes (max for my phone) and just manually turn it off whenever I'm not using it.

      You need SCREEBL. that's the correct spelling. It's by far the best app I've ever had. There's a short video one needs to watch be the developer. I couldn't bare living without my SCREEBL. It basically keeps the screen on while you're looking at/using phone and it doesn't when you are not. The amount of frustration avoided by not having the screen continually shut off mid sentence is priceless.

    With (LED back-lit) LCD screens, the dimmest setting is not actually the most energy efficient. This is because the background is pure white and the liquid crystal elements block the light coming through to yield the display which requires energy.

    I know this from my Android tablet which I use for reading. I have a black background and white text which I dim to the max to minimize its brightness at night. Whenever I run below 14%, the energy-saving mode comes on which cranks up the brightness.

    I'm not sure how the whole system works. It's possible that the LED back-light is a fixed brightness, or it might vary (perhaps going extra bright in outdoor conditions so the screen is not washed out.) So ideal settings would require some research.

      You're making a huge assumption that the extreme power saving setting to dim the screen to save power is going to be as low or lower than the setting you have chosen. I think you'll find that it isn't. The default power saving setting when compared to 100% is a drastic cut.

      I've read an article from I believe xda gurus that said top five ways to save battery power coming in at number one(#1) turn off auto screen brightness. There reason was that you will keep the screen much lower than what the system will.

    I have my screen timeout set to 30 seconds,and Slider Widget from the play store for brightness. While indoors, brightness is set to 7% - outdoors it is set as needed.

    I use a app on my tablet called "Battery Doc" and "Save Power" they free to download and do great job on saving power.

    I use auto brightness because if I left the phone in low brigjtness, then when I need to use it on sunny day, I can't see the screen for adjusting.

    You forgot another very important way to improve battery life: turn off the location feature of the phone. I get a huge amount of extra battery life by not having Google constantly checking my location. And when I need the location function for maps, etc I just hit the GPS toggle button in the quick settings menu. Once I'm done I turn it right back off and continue to save a lot of battery life.

    What does consume when autobrightness is on ? Is it that sometimes the screen stays at a high level brightness when it shouldn't, or is the analyse process which consume ? About analyse, how does it works ?

      its only my opinion, because it adjusts brightness to light around you, i can usually see it better when its abit more dimmer. and then there is the fact that it is constantly adjusting to different light..
      i guess it also depends on personal opinion, but i can sqeeze in extra battery % without being bothered.

        Ok. And do you think this sensor consume power or not ? I mean : if the sensor analyse the light and then doesn't change the luminosity level, does it consume more power because the sensor did an analyse ?

    i set brightness manually according to conditions, autobrightness can sometimes consume more than needed.
    i do use an app called 'Darker', that allows me to set brightness to lower than default (used for indoors), Pro version has many other useful features.
