Although in settings I've selected External Storage, when I open Play Music, it defaults to internal starage where none of my music is stored, and I can't find the SD card. Any help gratefully accepted. It's driving me mad!

Can you access any files on your SD card from your stock Files Explorer app?
If yes, then check whether your music player app does not support music files on external storage.
