Motorola Moto G — split screen OR minimization issue I do not like

I keep finding my Google maps reduced to a tiny little icon on my Moto G5s Plus. I don't like that.

How do I get rid of split screen altogether?

I went from the Moto X 1st Gen to the G5s Plus. I liked the way my Moto X minimized the screen and let me look at one app at a time.
Then you would press the little square button icon at the bottom right and you could cycle through your open apps. I like that.

How can I get back to the basic version?

I'm not fimaliar with Motorola phones.
But you should be able to go to your settings and shut off the split screen feature!
