Honor 8 — No Google Calendar notification sound when screen locked

When the screen is locked there is no notification sound when an event reminder is due. As soon as I unlock the screen the notification sound is played. This is very unsatisfactory as an appointment can be easily missed. This is happening with my Google Calendar app. Please help me to fix it. I am using Honor 8 Pro.
