I've a Nexus 5 with KitKat. Just how do I put in a homescreen shortcut to a web site?

Longpress the homescreen, select widgets, then 'bookmark', and select the bookmark.

Or, if you don't want to put it in the bookmarks, you can download Chrome BETA, which has an option in the menu specifically for that ;)
