Hi all,

I've rooted my samsung galaxy s2 recently and was wondering if I am able to update the firmware while the device is rooted?
Or would I have to unroot then upgrade?

thanks.

You don't have to unroot but as soon as you use the normal firmware update you loose the root and would have to reroot your Galaxy s2.

Hope that helps

Not entirely correct. Once your rooted, you can update the firmware. Just boot your phone into bootloader mode and make sure the firmware is on the root of your sd card, and it should install automatically. You shouldnt lose root after doing this, as I ve updated my firmware a few times and its never happened.

Only by flashing a stock ROM should you lose root.

I got a notification to update. Keep in mind that my phone is also rooted. When I update, it automatically proceeds to the boatloader screen. I have no idea what do do from here. I actually don't care if I lose my root or not. I would like to update to the new android version that is available to me.

Yeah, you would be able to update it, but it voids the warranty of your device, so think twice.

nooo
you need to unroot your device before applying updates

official updates required stock recovery
if you rooted your device your recovery will changed to a custom recovery

if you install the updates on rooted devices
either they turn off and open in bootloader mode
or may device got hard brick

so
before applying
1st unroot your device
clear davlik cache

then apply your updates

First let me thank you for the gracious help mate.

As i said i'm very new at this, i'm glad i asked the experts before going all noobacrazy on the phone.

I have recently purchased this phone from a guy ( open market ), and i fond this ''kingo root'' app installed '' that's how i figured it was rooted, besides the authentification error message, i can't check my imei using #*06# ( i don't know what this means ), the only thing i fond on the internet is how to mount a lollipop sprint ROM using cyanogenmode ! ( not sure how to do it exactly ) but i can follow the instructions and hope for the best i guess.

as for stock recovery i'm afraid that :

1st/ i have no idea what i'm supposed or how to do it.
2nd/ if i succeed it would become network locked,, ( it happened to me with an S2 once )
3rd/ The professional repairer in my city , to which i took my phone, said it was risky to go ....well hard brick as you said

Sorry for the long poste , again thank you !!! and thank you so much for any further info you can give me.

Desperately yours

well buddy

you can do 3 things
1st use the device as it is in .. don't unroot or apply update . use it in your current Android version

2nd. take some risk unroot your device
watch some videos on YouTube and download stock from from xda site and flash it
well it is risky for newbie ( I have rooted my device 8 times
unrooted 9 times
applied cyanogenmod 3 times
applied resurrection rom 3 times on htc device and many more)

all you need is a video tutorials from YouTube and guts 😁

3rd .. go to service center and ask him to fix it

on more opinions I wanna give

just call that person from which you had buy that phone and tell him to fix it
if he rooted the device then he can unroot it also

have a good day buddy 😊

I will also say that if you have the memory that will be taken for doing the update then you can update your rooted phone easily.

There are two ways to upgrade your phone.

1- via OTA :You can't use this if you've a rooted device
2- via flashing an updated firmware: you will actually need root permission to do this

I hope that answers your question

I downloaded official update of my phone lenovo X2-AP.
i had rooted my device just one day back and didn't know that device shouldn't be updated with its root on,so i went on to install the update.
since then my phone is providing the 4 options under lenovo recovery on the screen:

1.reboot
2.install package update - install failed
3.wipe user data-wiped already,didn't work
4.poweroff

what should i do now to switch on my phone?

I have the same question! I have rooted my phone with KingRoot App in simple steps. Everything is normal now. But I want to know that if I upgrade my phone, what would happen?

Yes you can, but you will have to rub out cache data and system data.
