Red tack & red box

While browsing the forum I have noticed on some post a red tack or a red box with a number in it !
Can anyone tell me what these indicate?

Hi Lindsay,

the blue boxes tell you how many replies there are in a thread in total. The number in the red box tells you how many new replies have been posted since you last opened the thread.
