First of all, you have to bring your village into farming so you could produce maximum Elixir and Gold. Then slowly start building your defense with Gold and Army with Elixir. Don't upgrade your town hall, please.
Everyone newbie makes this mistake by upgrading their town hall as they have more Gold. Go for strong walls, they will help you protect your defense from giants and barbarians.
