Default application notification sound off - Android 8.1

I have not yet determined how I can turn off the notification sound for all applications by default. After doing so, I will turn on the notification sound for only a few of the many applications on my phone. I am using Android 8.1.0 on a Moto G5+. Without this "default" option I will either continue to be repeatedly disturbed by notifications from more than a hundred applications or I will have to reset each of these applications individually. Surely there is a solution.

Had the same problem with my Galaxy s7.
In your post you said the solution.
You have to turn off the notifications for that app.
But the thing I discovered is sometimes the notifications are being routed through a different app!
Example; notifications from play store may be sent through Play Services!
Another thing I found is to turn off the apps permission to change the setting in your phone!
If a app can change the setting, it can turn the notifications on again!
