Do phones turn off automatically if they are cold

My ZTE Axon 7 keeps on saying there is no battery randomly. I think it may be because of the cold. I usually leave it out of my pocket when I am playing basketball outside to play music and usually,when the temperature is in the 50s(12 Celsius) it says power low, even when it is at 50-60% can any one help? image

It's true that a phone battery will not work properly when it is too cold and thus your phone will power off then.
But I think 12 Celsius is just a normal temperature. It is not yet too cold.

The phone is made of metal which makes the phone seem colder if that does anything
