Whatsapp working intermittently over Wi-Fi (Android)

Hope that someone can assist me - I have been experiencing problems for the past 3 weeks. I will do my best to explain them in the best way.
I have my wireless network set up at home. For as long as I can remember, whenever my phone (along with anyone else's) connects to my Wi-Fi, whatsapp has worked with no problem at all throughout the day.
For the past 3 weeks, whatsapp works intermittently when on Wi-Fi, unable to send messages or receive messages. I have to switch off to Mobile data to receive or send. This is not only on my phone, the same issue is experienced by others. However it does work on and off. The strange thing is, when it doesn't work - I am still able to browse the net via my Google Chrome browser on my phone and internet works fine via my laptop with no intermittent connection breaks.

I am highly confused as to why this occurs. Could anyone advise what could be the problem and how can I solve this?
