For some unknown reason the WiFi icon disappeared off my home screen ( Android 4.4.2) After much searching I discovered this method of restoring it: Open your apps. Then tap on Widgets and swipe along to the Icon shortcuts widget; long press this widget. When it opens it lists all the possible icons you can put your home screen; scroll down till you see WiFi, tap it and the icon is back somewhere on your home screen.
Hope this works for anybody who finds themselves in the predicament as I did. Joe.

You need to upgrade your software. Since if any default apps or feature goes off then only one option is left that just upgrade your device software. Then you will get your phone as a new one.
Hope this is helpful for you.
Thanks!
Yes my phone works exactly as it had before losing the icon.
Thanks for that.
