I tried turning the phone and the wifi off and on again. Then decided to re-install the app, but now it won't restore a back-up, saying that it doesn't have an internet connection. All my other apps work fine, internet loads fast. It wouldn't be a big problem to loose my conversations, but I don't believe that the problem is fixed when I continue without the back-up. Please help!

I think you can try to uninstall and install WhatsApp again. Then, connect to the network again so that you may use the WhatsApp to share files. It is literally stated in my comment that I tried to re-install the app. Therefore, I must have uninstalled it. I asked my own question, because I couldn't find an answer anywhere. This makes your complete comment useless.
For everybody who happens to have the same problem, don't try to ask anyone for help, all you'll get is 'Try to restart your phone.'. I waited for 2 weeks for the standard regular whatsapp update, after that it worked perfectly again.
