After doing a factory reset on my phone, I found out I should have encrypted the data on it to ensure a secure wipe. What can I do to completely remove what's now inaccessible on the surface but apparently easily recoverable with some software? I'm open to spending a few bucks on an app if there's no free, reliable way.

Also, if encryption still makes sense at this point, I'm using Android 2.3.5 and can't find the encryption option.
