Suddenly a number of apps have stopped working - The Telegraph, Washington post, Solitaire, two out of three email apps etc. When I try to use them they just revert to the apps screen. Internet connection is fine, bbc weather does not work but met office weather does. I have tried doing a re-boot but to no avail - long press on button etc. I have considered a factory re-set but that is drastic as it would mean re-loading lots of apps and also may not work. Any suggestions. Only started today and each time I re-open the tablet another app fails. The tablet is about three years old and has always been fine. Any suggestions?

Just discovered that there was a Google update that caused world-wide trouble for apps, that has since been corrected, so it was not my tablet after all. Sorry to have bothered you.

Okay, I see now. The issue is due to a system component called Android System WebView that lets Android apps display web content. It appears that a previous update mucked things up, causing apps that implemented a WebView to misbehave. :(
Google has confirmed this issue and has fixed it with a new update. (smug)

Check your Mediapad M5 for viruses with some antivirus app. Or directly do a factory reset after a full data backup.

Thanks. Have done a scan but nothing found, and now even more apps are falling by the wayside. Have discovered it is still under warranty so will do a backup and return it, removing email apps first; if I do a factory reset and it works I will be expecting it to happen again.

I have been struggling with Hisuite to back up my data, but it only seems to apply to phones; I tried other methods but then I suddenly discovered that everything worked fine again, the newspapers - everything. I do not know what did it.
