I'm only using Avast on my phone because of their anti-theft feature. It's free and it can be controlled via SMS. Is there more light-weight comparable free standalone antit-heft solution like that?

When you're looking for a light-weight app with the only anti-theft feature, you should try Prey (freemium) - a lightweight application with top-notch security. For its cross-platformed capability, it works in Windows, Mac OsX, Linux and Android, and will help you track and find your phone and laptop if it ever gets stolen.

As well as, you also try Android Device Manager, Android Lost, Wheres My Droid, Lookout Mobile Security (freemium), or Google find my phone.

Hope, you'll find this answer helpful.

Thanks

Avast makes just awesome software and I am very glad that I started using Avast products. They are ideal for both home use and corporate use! I am engaged in cyber security and at the moment I decided that it is most profitable to use the software from Avast because I had excellent experience with these programs! At first, I doubted between the choice of avast and mcafee, but after I read a detailed review of avast vs mcafee, I decided that it was more profitable and most reliable to use products from avast. For three months of use, I had no problems with system security and data privacy!
