Before proceeding with the topic, let's get to know what is stock recovery. In Android, recovery refers to a specific bootable partition which helps users to reset their devices and install OTA updates. OTA updates refer to Over-the-Air programming which means the various methods of distributing new software. The specialty of OTA updates is, its ability send one update to all the users at once. But users who have installed custom recovery cannot receive the OTA updates. That is why stock recovery is essential. Actually, capabilities of stock recovery are very few when compared to Custom recovery.

Stock Recovery Vs Custom Recovery

Stock recovery only provides factory reset, OTA updates, and diagnostic tasks. But custom recovery gives you the ability to install Custom ROMs, backup and restore Android devices. Therefore users love to flash Custom recovery like CWM and TWRP in order to install Custom ROMs.But as mentioned above Stock recovery is compulsory to receive OTA updates. So if you have already installed a Custom recovery you have to get back to stock Recovery to receive OTA updates.
