Motorola Moto E — Downloading photos to MAC - Moto E4 purchased in US brought back to UK

Hello,

My mother purchased a Moto E4 for her travels in the US and took photos on it. She's now back home in the UK, and I can't work out how to download her photos to our MAC using Android File Transfer. Am I missing something? Does the phone need to be unlocked? I'm completely in the dark - would appreciate any thoughts!
