Last week I purchased a Mate 9 Huawei phone in China and since I reside in India, tried to use it this week.
It won't allow me to download Play Store for installing applications.

Can any one help or my investment in an otherwise very good phone a waste?

Thanks

You need the correct version of GMS Installer and Google Installer for this purpose. I have both of them here in this guide: oscrunch.com/2018/12/11/play-store-huawei-honor-chinese/
if you want to use Play Store within China, you will have to opt for a VPN as well. Outside China, this guide will make things smooth for you.
