Whatsapp hacked??

So one of my friends has been receiving messages as though they were sent by me through whatsapp and they don't appear on my phone nor do I get notified when he responds. The only way I know of the messages is because he has shown me them but they do not appear on my phone as messages i've sent.

How is this possible and is there away to work out who is doing this to me?

Really need help because i'm worried other messages will be sent to more of my contacts and I honestly don't know how this is at all possible, thanks

very likely, someone close to you has your phone # and setup a new whatsapp app. IMO--quickly update Whatsapp to its newest version, beta version if possible. and to enable the new security feature---two factor authentication process---by enter your new PASSCODE and recovery email. So that , if someone intends to hack your acct, passcode will stop it right there. Moreover, Whatsapp will periodically verify your passcode by asking you to enter it before open the app. Good luck.
