Where did my whats app message go?

Hi,
I just had a notification pop up with the first few words of a message from my friend, and I swiped it left to get rid of it as I was going to read it later but didn't want it flashing as a new message. I do this all the time and it works fine. Unfortunately my battery then died.

When I plugged it in and went into the whats app application later on to read it, I had a prompt asking me when I'd like to use Google backup??! (Annoying thing!) I just said weekly to get rid of it. But then when I went back into the chat I had with my friend the message wasn't there??! The latest message was the last thing I said to her!

Can I get this message back? Where did it go??!
