about IMEI

Hello,

  1. Does anyone knows where IMEI is stored ?
    It's not in sim card so, where is it actually stored ?

  2. Another thing, I see there is a way to unlock the IMEI using AT commands, does it means it communicated with sim , or is it communicating some server in cloud ?
