About encrypted messages on last update

I was chatting with a friend, and a message poped up, saying that messages on the conversation ware safe. I clicked that message, and it said this feature was able if both parts of the conversation had last update. When my friend checked my profile, it said that I had to update Whatsapp to use that feature, but I have last update installed.
Something is not right.

You got this because of new WhatsApp update which now enables End-to-end encryption of WhatsApp messages. Only when both the parties are updated to latest version with end-to-end encryption then only the chats are completey safe. Most probably, in your case it was your friend who was not on latest version of WhatsApp.
