This latest upgrade has made this thing useless to me, and I am not a computer tech, so there is no way I can get this thing downgraded on my own.

If the upgrade made the Nexus 7 useless. then you can downgrade to older OS. just Factory reset the device, it will work fine and normal. if you still want to sell it, sell it in local market.
