Ugly Smileys

Is the any way to replace the Ugly Green Smileys in Android 4.3 because they are terrible.
I presume I would need a rooted phone if this is a way and I am willing to go the distance.
It is a petty thing but every time I use them I have the same reaction - UGLY, so I want them gone
