Samsung Galaxy S4 — camera freezing

recently I noticed my camera freezing and followed all instructions found online and ended up restoring all settings to factory default. This last step seemed to solve the problem. I removed the SD card before I did all of this just in case I lost that data too. When I started up the phone again the camera worked and there was no freezing. I just put the SD card back into the phone and went to open up the Gallery app and the phone froze. I am thinking that the insertion of the SD card had something to do with this since everything worked before I put the card in.

any thoughts on this??

The camera and the gallery are the same app, so if you have a large amount of data or any corrupted data it will slow down or close the camera. Check the files on the sd card and move anything you don't need onto your PC and see if there's a difference.
