Rooting Galaxy Tab P1000 Froyo 2.2

I am so close to rooting my galaxy tab. But Somebody shed more light ... if I go ahead, will the process delete my exixting apps? Is there a way to back up my apps before rooting just to be on the safe side ? I can't afford to lose 270 apps installed!
