Non-Touch Screen-Optimized Apps On Android TV Stick

I'm not sure if this is a good forum for this or not, but here goes. I recently bought an Android tv stick based on the X96S chipset running Android 9.0.

Is there any way install apps that are not optimized for touch screens? The apps that I install from the the Play Store treat up and down movements from the remote like tabs, and while I can use the mouse to click around and start a movie it's cumbersome. "Swiping" with a mouse on a remote control is also a royal pain.

I'm in the process of trying to setup Kodi on it, but it'd be better if I could use native apps.
