500: maintenance mode

Greetings from the Engine Room!

Sorry, but there's really nothing to see here right now. Our server is in maintenance mode – and our little bot is trying to sort the error messages with its last bit of energy.

Whether it was a data leak, a power outage in the cluster, or just a grumpy bit – we don't know yet. But what we do know is:

The data drama escalated into a server meltdown. But don't worry: We're on it.

What now?

  • Everything is surely running smoothly over at our colleagues from inside digital – why not stop by!
  • Or you could pass the time by visiting our social media channels – for example Instagram, YouTube or TikTok. At least there are no server problems there – promised.

Thanks for your patience. Our bot is already rebooting at full speed. 🔧

After ANC, what will be the next audio innovation for wireless headphones and earphones?
Sitting on the sidelines of IFA 2022, I had the opportunity to talk with Christian Ern, head of Sennheiser's consumer headphones and earphones catalog. We discussed audiophilia, true wireless headphones, and "ambient awareness" which are slated to be the next big thing in consumer audio wearables after ANC.

Patent Wars: We're doomed!
Oppo and OnePlus are currently banned from selling their smartphones in Germany on an official basis; as they are currently sold only via third parties. The source of this? A patent lawsuit from Nokia. This is reminiscent of past patent wars like Apple vs. Samsung - and we are worried enough to ask ourselves whether this is just a bump in the road, or is the patent war celebrating a comeback?

Reselling your phone? Check this out first...
Where do refurbished smartphones come from? Last week, we were invited by Rebuy, one of the biggest retailers of refurbished smartphones in Europe—based in Germany. We were able to visit one of their logistic centers that is located on the outskirts of Berlin, where all the smartphones were received from individuals and have to undergo a sorting process, where they are subsequently processed, cleaned, and tested before finding a new forever home.

Retro phones: Why buying a dumbphone or an old phone is smart
Through the romantic notion of nostalgia or simply the desire of disconnecting oneself, some people choose to abandon their smartphone in order to return to their first mobile love. If retro phones are not yet a trend right now, we at NextPit do wonder whether this phenomenon has a future. We take a look at the pros and cons of using a retro handset!

Smart switch rant: The absurdity of replacing a light switch
Life or death, night or day, on or off, all these concepts are delightfully simple. Somehow in a twisted manner, however, manufacturers of smart home products have managed to replace this simple concept in many households with voice commands and smartphone controls. Smart light switches suck, even if they are advertised as being particularly practical and clever.

Cyborg overreview: Startup makes me an "ultrahuman"
Ultrahuman calls its customers "cyborgs", selling them sensors that measure glucose from the interstitial tissue via a small hair-like flexible filament just under the skin on a continuous basis. The readings are supposed to revolutionize the nutrition and fitness industries. NextPit spoke with CEO and founder Mohit Kumar to find out more.

Stop! Do not blindly buy smartphones on AliExpress!
Buying a smartphone on AliExpress is not something strange to do in 2022. However, I have the impression that some of us make a purchase on the grey market without being aware of the risks.

OnePlus and its alarm clock app makes me mad!
It's a big deal! I have said to my editor colleagues and now to the rest of the world! The OnePlus Clock application, and more specifically the Alarm Clock feature, is the only thing I truly hate, with all of my guts, in OxygenOS and in this world in general.

Subscription-based apps interview: Is it a money pit?
In recent years, we have seen a steady, creeping change in apps: Instead of buying apps, people are in increasing number 'renting' them in the guise of subscription models. But where does this trend change actually stem from, what are the problems and possibly, the opportunities?
