500: maintenance mode

Greetings from the Engine Room!

Sorry, but there's really nothing to see here right now. Our server is in maintenance mode – and our little bot is trying to sort the error messages with its last bit of energy.

Whether it was a data leak, a power outage in the cluster, or just a grumpy bit – we don't know yet. But what we do know is:

The data drama escalated into a server meltdown. But don't worry: We're on it.

What now?

  • Everything is surely running smoothly over at our colleagues from inside digital – why not stop by!
  • Or you could pass the time by visiting our social media channels – for example Instagram, YouTube or TikTok. At least there are no server problems there – promised.

Thanks for your patience. Our bot is already rebooting at full speed. 🔧

Slack fight: Do we need better sounding smartphone speakers?
The Asus ROG Phone 5 picked up a silver medal for good audio quality in a recent Dx0mark test. However, Antoine still refuses to acknowledge the smartphone speaker's performance and capability until today. Things got rather heated up between Ben and him over our company's Slack chat. Do smartphone speakers need to be improved with each edition, or is it a moot point in the first place?

Has the era of custom ROMs come to an end?
There is a clear picture emerging as far as the software update policy offered by smartphone manufacturers is concerned with Samsung pointing the way forward. But what does this mean for custom ROMs which have long been hailed as the only way we could prolong the life of older devices? Could this be the beginning of the end for custom ROM distributions? That's our point of discussion in today's article. Samsung promises four years of security updates for their new smartphones

The rise of Qualcomm alternatives. Time to take them seriously?
In December 2020, tech blogs around the world reported something very interesting. Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek, for the first time since its incorporation, shipped more chips in Q3, 2020, than Qualcomm. The news did come as a surprise to many seasoned tech reporters because for a very long time, Qualcomm was thought to be the infallible, unchallenged market leader. What changed?

'Nothing' and ambient computing: Can we really ditch tech devices?
There is great hype surrounding Nothing, the new start-up by former OnePlus founder Carl Pei. The very idea that technology needs to be more seamless, more organic, and smart enough to work on my behalf without me having to interact with it is a utopian dream. Making it seem almost impossible for us to live without a smartphone, right?

Phones with no chargers: Is it really about saving the planet?
Would you like your brand new smartphone to come with or without a charger? Is it really a zero-sum game, where you have to choose between saving the planet or ripping consumers off? This is one heated debate concerning new smartphones that are sold without a charger and to justify this, it claims that one does so simply to protect the environment. NextPit's comments section is positively burning with frank discussions going back and forth, and the same is happening among the editorial staff!

Samsung Exynos 2100: Too important to fail
Samsung has scheduled its own launch event for the Exynos 2100 for the very first time in the company's history. This year, the South Koreans see themselves to be very well-positioned in the seemingly eternal duel with Qualcomm. They had better be, simply because this particular shot has to hit the target!

2020 - You were a terrible year but a great teacher
The year 2020 is finally over! It was marked by pandemics, lockdowns, quarantines, carelessness, and some presidents who don't take the will of the people very seriously. Still, I wouldn't want to dismiss 2020 as a total disaster. After all, it has also brought about many things in us that might otherwise have remained hidden forever.

AirPods Max: the unjustifiable price of Apple's headphones is a moot point
"Oh no, another expensive Apple product. Quick, quick, I have to go on Twitter and explain how Apple's AirPods Max wireless over-ear headphones aren't worth its exorbitant price of £549."

AirPods Max: Apple, we need to talk about this expensive bra
After much speculation, Apple today quietly announced the first over-ear headphones with an Apple logo on them. The AirPods Max cost $549/£549 and are thus at the very top of the headphone segment; in the consumer electronics sector, they are certainly even closer to the very top. But can Apple's headphones stand up to strong competition from Bose, Sony, and Sennheiser?
