500: maintenance mode

Greetings from the Engine Room!

Sorry, but there's really nothing to see here right now. Our server is in maintenance mode – and our little bot is trying to sort the error messages with its last bit of energy.

Whether it was a data leak, a power outage in the cluster, or just a grumpy bit – we don't know yet. But what we do know is:

The data drama escalated into a server meltdown. But don't worry: We're on it.

What now?

  • Everything is surely running smoothly over at our colleagues from inside digital – why not stop by!
  • Or you could pass the time by visiting our social media channels – for example Instagram, YouTube or TikTok. At least there are no server problems there – promised.

Thanks for your patience. Our bot is already rebooting at full speed. 🔧

Webcams in lockdown: how 2020 made us all entertainers
If I had told my mother a few months ago that we could Zoom together later - she would have probably been surprised enough to go and get an old video camera from the basement. Meanwhile, she can, like countless former technology laymen, start a video meeting within seconds and switch confidently to the rear camera for a short dog video. The year 2020 has made us entertainers and shows how well people can adapt to their circumstances.

How tech took over the fitness industry: are we really getting in shape?
There is a clear and growing trend in the tech industry when it comes to fitness-focused products and services, and in 2020 we’ve only seen things moving in one direction. Anyone who been to a trade show like CES of IFA in the last two years will have witnessed it first hand. It has never been easier to ‘buy yourself fitter’, but how much of an impact is smart tech really having on the health of our populations?

Live Nation's idea 5G-enhaced gigs is my own personal hell
Beverly Hills-based events promoter and venue operator has partnered with silicon giant Qualcomm to bring 5G to the live music experience. For those who disdain people who spend gigs filming the show on their smartphones, the future of live concerts sounds like a show I don't want a ticket for.

IFA 2020: Huawei shows it's not giving up on Europe
"Take a stand", or so the saying goes. At IFA 2020, Huawei has taken the expression to the literal extreme. The Chinese giant was one of the only major mobile manufacturers to be physically present with a booth/stand at the technology fair that is currently happening in Berlin. This is certainly a novel way to ensure that your presence is known in Europe, even though there are no new products lined up for announcements that will wow the masses.

How Google made a mess of its hardware business
According to Alphabet’s Q4 earnings, Google has itself a hardware business that brings in at least $2 billion a year. Surprised? So are we. The numbers, however, do not tell the full story. With the Pixel 5 now surely on the horizon, we take a look at Google's hardware struggles over the years.

Apple vs. Android: the meaningless war fuelling the fanboy fallacy
Whether its Android vs. Apple or Android vs. Android, tech fans love clashes and clan wars that rage in the comments sections of articles. In reality, we're all sheep who think we're shepherds. But how did we get here? And why is it dangerous?

Apple iFold: why a foldable smartphone from Apple both worries and intrigues me
"Foldable smartphones will be the next revolution," Samsung claimed in 2019 before the tumultuous launch of the Galaxy Fold. A follow-up, if not a launch, is coming from Apple according to the latest leaks about a future foldable iPhone. A prospect more than exciting for any technophile but which worries me precisely because Apple is in control.

Why are smartphone repairs so expensive?
The guys and girls at iDoc are professionals when it comes to smartphone repair. In the name of helping people to help themselves, they create high-quality repair instructions and do teardowns. The latest one is dedicated to Google Pixel 4. You can order a replacement display, which alone costs more than many low-budget smartphones. We asked why the prices for smartphone spare parts are so high.
