NewsTabletTensor G4 SoC and Faster Memory in the Pixel Fold 2
Google has been powering its Pixel devices with its custom Tensor chipsets for a few years now. The latest Tensor G3 debuted with the Pixel 8 (review). If all goes according to plan, it is expected the Pixel Fold’s (review) successor should also be powered by the same SoC. However, a fresh rumor has appeared, speculating the Pixel Fold 2 may jump to the more capable Tensor G4 SoC.

Google’s chip switch could delay the Pixel Fold 2
Interestingly, there appears to be a new development on how Google will test its 2nd generation foldable smartphone. An unnamed tipster shared such information with Android Authority, alleging that Google’s latest Pixel Fold 2 prototype will be equipped with the unannounced Tensor G4 SoC as opposed to the Tensor G3.
While it is possible for Google to select a different chip at the very last minute, given the same happened with the Pixel Tablet (review), this suggests the release schedule for the Pixel Fold 2 could be affected. Instead of expecting the new foldable smartphone being unveiled at I/O 2024 in May thereabouts, we might see it arrive in fall when the Tensor G4 will only be ready alongside the Pixel 9.
However, there seems to be an opposing view to this, as was noted by the news outlet that the Pixel Fold 2 is already undergoing an engineering validation test. In other words, it would still be on time for a May or June release. What we could infer from this is Google could still launch the Pixel Fold 2 this summer but with a Tensor G3 or delay it to fall albeit with the newer Tensor G4.
Google Pixel Fold 2 specifications
Regardless of the chipset the Pixel Fold 2 uses, the Tensor G4 is a minor upgrade over its predecessor, with an increase in the CPU and GPU speeds. Of course, we would still want to see the chipset deliver more than just these, including a marked upgrade in AI capabilities and better power efficiency, which are some shortcomings of the Tensor G4.
Beyond the chipset choice, the Pixel Fold 2 will most likely deliver superior specifications. According to the same source, the device will boast a larger and faster memory configuration. It is touted to carry 16 GB of LPPDR5 RAM and 256 GB UFS 4.0 storage. The latter is a welcome upgrade from the UFS 3.1 storage on the original Pixel Fold.
In addition, we might also see the Pixel Fold 2 feature better cameras which are already available on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, including a new 50 MP primary or a 48 MP ultra-wide sensor.
