Valve recently rolled out an update for the SteamVR Beta. There is one interesting detail hidden in the patch notes, however: it seems that some of Valve's Beat Saber players were too fast for the system.

Beat Saber is a rhythm VR game in which players use virtual lightsabers to cut through blocks that move towards them in sync with the music. Since many have become pros at the game, Expert + mode was introduced, which requires almost superhuman skills. However, as our colleagues at UploadVR recently discovered in the patch notes for the SteamVR Beta, Valve has now had to update the software because some Beat Saber players move too fast for the tracking system.

Superhuman players

At the request of UploadVR, Ben Jackson, engineer at Valve, explained that one of the checks the software performs when trying to detect errors is the speed of movement. There's a maximum set up and everything above is considered an error.

But then came the aforementioned Expert+ mode, which some great players at Valve tried out for themselves. It turned out that they were moving faster than they thought possible - an angle change of 3,600 degrees per second! This video shows how fast you have to swing your virtual saber in the game:

The Valve employees were using the yet unreleased Knuckles controller. With it, the center of gravity is particularly close to the hand, making it easier to achieve a high speed when turning.

Have you played Beat Saber before? What did you think? Let us know in the comments.
