As we all know, the M preview has been released by Google. I've been running it for the last couple of days to find out if it's worth the effort or if there are any caveats about trying it out. So far, all's good; battery life is excellent when idle and comparable to 5.1.1 when in use, it seems smoother than Lollipop, and apart from the changes under the skin there are a few welcome extras(most of which have been covered in other parts of the forum) which are useful. It's stable enough for daily use, though some apps may not work properly with it until they're updated. It hasn't been rooted yet but it should be by the end of today so no restoring apps or removing bloatware yet, but there is a proper permissions manager to regulate what your apps can and can't do, plus if there are some things you really need to do (ad-blocking, volume boost etc) then installing a custom recovery and flashing the appropriate zips should work; there's no huge differences in the build.prop or general root system.
These show some of the changes such as lockscreen, customisable quick settings, theming, multi-window (needs to be enabled via adb or zip), recents etc.
