The AirPods Max (review) remain Apple’s premium over-ear offering. Apple refreshed the lineup in late 2024, introducing a new USB-C port that replaces the legacy Lightning connector. This brings versatile charging options, especially since most other Apple products have now switched to the universal interface.
The refreshed AirPods Max also introduced support for 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio via a wired connection. This is a key feature many fans have requested, as it improves the already excellent audio quality. Additionally, there is a new ultra low-latency mode which is useful for streaming and gaming. The headphones carry over other advanced features like personalized spatial audio with dynamic head tracking.
When it comes to active noise cancellation, the AirPods Max deliver exceptional suppression that is difficult for other high-end over-ear headphones to match. Their transparency mode is also highly praised for sounding natural while blending ambient sounds into your listening experience.
In terms of design, the new AirPods Max maintain the premium build quality and elegant look of the original model. The large earcups are made of anodized aluminum with a stainless steel headband. The breathable knit mesh band provides a unique look and a comfortable fit for long listening sessions.
