5 reasons why you should buy the Moto X Style

The Motorola Moto X Style is the most complete package of the three recent additions to the Motorola stable. Now that the dust has settled following the smartphone's release, here are five good reasons why we think you should consider buying the Moto X Style.

1. Optimization of Voice Control

Since the first generation of Moto X smartphones, there has been heavy investment into the user experience – and that investment has paid off. The voice commands developed early on by the Motorola team, then still part of Google, were a breath of fresh air in the mobile market. The second generation carried on the good work, integrating peripheral services and centralizing all the Moto features.

The Moto X Style has optimized the speech recognition feature even further, and the more you use it, the more accurate and responsive it will become.

The tech has become much smarter in this latest model, to the extent that it can adapt to the needs and environment of the user. For example, you can set your phone to use vocal alerts for notifications and messages in certain situations (such as when driving) or set it to keep quiet in others. Users can then respond as appropriate without touching the keypad. To see this in action, skip to 20:03 in the video below.

2. Stereo speaker on the front

After experimenting with stereo speakers on the Moto G 2014 and a mono speaker on the 2014 Moto X, Motorola decided to try something different. The Moto X Style has two stereo speaker columns at the front. This vastly increases its sound quality and offers a sonic experience that most high end devices, with the possible exception of some of Sony's Xperia Z models, cannot match.

3. Customization

After almost two years, Motorola is finally offering customers a legitimate customization platform, the Moto Maker. The platform allows you to choose from a range of colors for the back cover, the metal cover around the camera and the frame of the device.

Most of the customizable options come free with the phone but if you want a truly personal touch, you'll have to pay a little more.

4. Support for MicroSD card

The way Motorola has shifted the goalposts in expandable storage options has been pretty incredible. At a time when one of the world's largest smartphone manufacturers is giving up microSD support in its phones, Motorola offers a single slot that gives you dual-chip support and microSD simultaneously.

As a result, the memory on the Moto X Style can be increased up to 128 GB. The way Motorola's engineers have dealt with this issue restores our faith in intelligent and practical solutions to the toughest storage questions.

5. Increased battery capacity

No matter how much Motorola try to tells us that the battery for the Moto X series was able to last an average user 24 hours, evidence suggests that wasn't the case. However, after the success of high-capacity models such as the Droid Turbo and the Nexus 6, Motorola seems to have realized an investment in extending battery life is a solid choice.

As a result, the battery capacity has increased significantly – 2,300 mAh to 3,000 mAh – from one generation to the next.

Conclusion

By now you'll have worked out that all of the Moto X Style's strongest selling points are related to user experience. This idea has always driven this particular series of devices and the philosophy remains strong in the latest model. The Moto X Style focuses on even greater interaction between human and device, rather than being too concerned about hardware.

Indeed, when the first model in the Moto X series came out, former Google and Apple alumnus and Motorola advisor Guy Kawasaki noted that people don't wake up in the morning thinking 'I need a processor with x amount of cores'; they just think that they want a cool smartphone. And the the Moto X Style definitely ticks all the right boxes.

Will you buy the Moto X Style? If so, why and if not, why not?

Great spec's, great looking phone but it's just simply too big! I like one handed usable phones 5"-5.2".

Interesting article. If (that's IF) the Saygus V2 still isn't released like they've been saying, I might consider this Motorola as a possible new phone. I actually asked Motorola why does the cheaper version of the new Moto X have a bigger better battery than the flagship version, they told me they don't know !?! As for your mention of customization, when you can change your boot animation like you can your wallpapers, widgets & apps, without having to root your phone, that's true customization. Can this new Motorola give you that, I'm guessing probably not. Pity, that would of been good. Still, it looks like a handsome device.

We love customization! I think this is one of the features of Moto X that people really like because they are able to style their smartphone according to their taste and preference.

I have several old phones I use for GPS traces while hiking, cameras, and Bluetooth music players. Asking one device to do all this results in a hot phone with a rapidly discharging battery.

So, being able to use my devices for several years after they cease to be my main phone/tablet is pretty much my primary requirement (SD memory, weather resistance, and an updatable OS comes next). And for that to happen, I need to be able to change out the lithium-based battery. They are useless after several years of normal usage.

Can the battery on the Moto X Style be changed? Even if I have to use a special screwdriver or spudger to pry open the case, Can it be done? If not, then this phone will be little more than electronic waste in just a few years.

I'm undecided between the Style or the Play. I'll wait until I can have a look and play with them before making a decision.

I think I shall get this when my contract expires in Feb 2016. Has all the features that I look for in a good smartphone, ticks all the boxes for me.

With how good the Moto X style seems to be, it makes me even more impatient for the reveal of the next device in Motorala's DROID line.
