Poll: Would you buy from Huawei despite US intelligence warnings?

Huawei has been trying to break into the US market for a while now, but its best chance of success thus far was recently dashed by a partnership with AT&T being called off. To make matters for the Chinese firm even worse, six top intelligence chiefs are warning Americans not to buy Huawei smartphones. Does this development make you suspicious?

Since carrier sales account for the majority of smartphone sales in the US, having the AT&T partnership fall through at the last minute, reportedly due to pressure from lawmakers, is a huge blow to the brand's attempts to go mainstream in the US market. Now, concerns about Huawei's alleged links to the Chinese Communist Party are growing even stronger and more public as six US intelligence chiefs have come forward to warn consumers.

The directors of the CIA, FBI, NSA and the Director of National Intelligence among others initially cautioned government workers and agencies against using products from Huawei and another Chinese firm, ZTE. But, during a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on Tuesday, they extended that warning from just public servants to all Americans.

FBI Director Chris Wray testified, "We're deeply concerned about the risks of allowing any company or entity that is beholden to foreign governments that don't share our values to gain positions of power inside our telecommunications networks. That provides the capacity to exert pressure or control over our telecommunications infrastructure. It provides the capacity to maliciously modify or steal information. And it provides the capacity to conduct undetected espionage."

Of course, everyone knows that the devices and services we use are capable of collecting data on users surreptitiously. OnePlus got caught doing this quite recently. But, does this warning make you think twice about Huawei in particular? We want to know if these developments influence your likelihood of buying Huawei products.

Will the warnings from US intelligence chiefs keep you from buying Huawei smartphones?

I have owned and used both Honor (Huawei), as well as ZTE, with no significant problems (with a better experience than MotoLenovo, Asus, and/or LG)!

I don't believe these warnings from the FBI, or the CIA, when the NSA spies on EVERYONE in America (could it be the NSA is having problems spying on certain devices manufactured in China? isn't encryption significant enough to protect one from hacking?)!

If Chinese built smartphones are such a problem; then wouldn't smart TV's, game consoles, Blu-ray players (anything that connects to the internet) also be a risk? I think not, or 90% of what's sold at Best Buy and/or Walmart would be removed from store shelves!

I challenge the U.S. Government to take apart any electronic device manufactured in China live on television (not pre-recorded) and prove it to me - or stop lying to consumers!

Perhaps it's time for Google / Android to step forward and debunk these claims; with a guarantee to not offer Android OS to any manufacturer deemed questionable! Perhaps Google / Android can force manufacturers to guarantee timely updates / security patches (and demand carriers don't limit updates / security patches)!

I've owned Huawei. I wouldn't buy then again based on that experience. Poor updates, poor developer community, bad tacked on UI and bloat apps. The hardware is decent. But they don't support it intelligently.

Somehow someway, I firmly believe Apple & Samsung had to do with this deal. It wouldn't be hard for both to throw some money around and put the screws to Huawei being sold in the US. Food for thought!

I've had 3. Mates 2, 8, 9. Never had a problem with any of them. With regard to the spying, what do you think google, apple, FBI, CIA, NSA, and everything else does? Plus, most all consumer electronics is made in China...you have to be beholding to the communist government in some way, to do business in China
